Abstract: The genus crocus L. consists currently of about 160 recognized species, small, corm bearing, perennial species having an old world distribution, primarily in mediterranean – west Europe and NW Africa to W China, with the center of species diversity on the Balkan Peninsula and in Turkey. Due to very dark form of crocus banaticus also called Romanian form. All crocus banaticus originated in Romania but this was raised from wild seeds. Due to distinctive plant, it creates its own sub- genus is the crocus sub-family known as crocoideae and sub-genus crociris. History, botany, taxonomy, infra-specific taxa, distribution, ecology, phenology, description, chromosome counts, etc. are provided with key to their identification. C/Campus Universitário s/n, 0207. Albacete. Resumen El género Crocus pertenece a la familia de las Iridáceas y es conocido por su especie cultivada, el azafrán (Crocus sativus L.). El género incluye 88 especies, muchas de las cuales tienen interés como ornamentales, y otras son exclusivamente silvestres. En su conjunto, constituyen una fuente de variabilidad genética de enorme interés. En España pueden encontrarse 6 especies silvestres de este género, que son tanto de floración otoñal (C. serotinus, C. nudiflorus y C. cambessedesii) como primaveral (C. nevadensis, C. carpetanus y C. vernus). El trabajo que aquí exponemos, ha tenido como objetivo llevar a cabo una revisión minuciosa de las citas sobre la localización de estas especies en España y la recolección de ejemplares en los lugares en que ha sido posible, para su posterior conservación en el Banco de Germoplasma Vegetal de Cuenca (Centro de investigación Agraria de Albadalejito), así como la caracterización del ambiente forestal en el que crecen. -

It is also to be hoped that you have been blessed with a good seed set on your plants and have been gathering and saving the seed in order to be able to donate some to the Seed Exchange of the SRGC. It is only through the kindness of members who donate seed to our Exchange, and to those of other organisations one may also support, of course, that there are such wonderful lists of thousands of taxa available, in tens of thousands of packets, to be shared with members. Many members join clubs like SRGC with the primary intention of taking part in the Seed Exchange so a great debt of gratitude is owed to all who generously donate seed from their plants. Donated seeds of over 5000 species and varieties of alpines, rock plants and bulbs suitable for rock and woodland gardens are packeted by volunteers and listed annually in the Seed List of the SRGC Seed Exchange. As you might imagine, a great many of these seeds are not available commercially. It is great fun to grow plants from seed and there is additional satisfaction in growing plants from seed you have collected yourself. You are invited to send in seed to the SRGC as soon as possible – and certainly before the end of October. Volume LVIII ANNALI DI BOTANICA 2000 A PRELIMINARY LIST OF RARE OR ENDANGERED IRIDACEAE SPECIES At this meeting the importance of focussing on rare and endangered Iridaceae species in each country became evident. A complete check list of the conservation status of rare and endangered Irid a cea e species is not yet estabilished. Here we present (Appendix) the list of the World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC)* for rare and endangered Iridaceae, according to the IUCN categories. Some problems occur in listing rare and endangered species. For example, although in Israel legislation has protected all Iris species since 1964, so that we have now a complete list, this is not the case in other countries and for other genera. Furthermore, unsolved taxonomic problems confused the issue in some species and the exact distribution of others is still unknown. Here, we want to stimulate colleagues working on Irid a c e a e to send new information to the monitoring centre to improve the current red list. In Italy, we have species of bearded irises which are endangered because of animal and/or human influence. For example, in some areas of Italy, wild boar populations have been promoted to favour hunting, with resulting damage to Iris populations which have been rapidly reduced to a few individuals, as I. relicta Colas, on Monte delle Fate (Southern Lazio), because the boars dig up Iris rhizomes. In other areas, the intensive construction of houses has endangered some populations, for example, in the case of/, setina Colas. (Latina), a bearded Iris that flowers in February. -

Some of these alien species manage to establish reproducing naturalized populations, and some naturalized alien species subsequently become invasive. Invasion by alien plant species can negatively affect native communities and ecosystems, but what gives the alien species an advantage under novel conditions is still not clear. Therefore, identifying the drivers of invasions has become a major goal in invasion ecology. Reproduction is crucial in plant invasions, because propagule supply is required for founding new populations, population maintenance and spread in non-native regions. Baker’s Law, referring to the superior advantage of species capable of uniparental reproduction in establishing after long distance dispersal, has received major interest in explaining plant invasions. However, previous findings regarding Baker’s Law are contradicting. Moreover, there has been an increasing interest in understanding the integration of alien plant species into native plant-pollinator networks but few studies have looked at the pollination ecology of successful (naturalized and invasive) and unsuccessful (non-naturalized and non-invasive) alien plant species. -
