If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. For illustrations that cannot be satisfactorily reproduced by xerographic means, photographic prints can be purchased at additional cost and inserted into your xerographic copy. These prints are available upon request from the Dissertations Customer Services Department. 5. Some pages in any document may have indistinct print.     New Hope Audubon Society Newsletter Volume 32, Number 5: September-October 2006 Field Trip Goals for Fall 2006-2007 by Dianne Byrne, Field Trip Chair Planning field trips for New Hope Audubon Society members is fun. That’s one reason why I volunteered to be the Field Trip Chair. I meet some of the best birders in NC (like Curtis Smalling, who led a marvelous field trip in the NC mountains last Fall), local butterfly experts like Will Cook and Jeff Pippen (who are both leading events in August and September), dragonfly guru Josh Rose, and bug enthusiasts like Patrick Coin who captures amazing creatures of the night in his photographs. Cynthia Fox and Tom Driscoll, superb birders both, lead trips for NHAS each month. Carol Ann McCormick from the NC Botanical Gardens invites NHAS members on her beautiful wildflower walks every year. Besides rubbing elbows, or sharing spotting scopes, with such naturalists extraordinaire, I also hear about fascinating places to visit. One member suggested a trip to the Carnivore Preservation Trust, a place I thoroughly enjoyed and had not heard about before. Then there is the thrill of visiting an internationally known wildlife research center like the Duke Lemur Center and hearing participants tell how much they loved seeing the amazing animals that reside there. My work is easy because NC is blessed with a variety of unique wildlife habitats, and because there are many nature experts willing to share their knowledge by leading field trips. Besides having a good time as Field Trip Chair, what other field trip goals do I have for the upcoming year? I described some of them at the annual planning meeting of the Board of Directors in July and solicited comments and suggestions from Board members.

In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Molecular Phylogenetics of the Superfamily Curculionoidea (Insecta: Coleoptera) Conrad Paulus Dias Trafford Gillett March 2014 Thesis abstract This thesis examines higher-level evolutionary history within the superfamily Curculionoidea, the most speciose family-level taxon, which includes beetles commonly known as weevils. This is achieved using a phylogenetic approach incorporating the largest datamatrix yet employed for weevil molecular systematics, and includes an investigation into the prospect of obtaining short phylogenetically informative amplicons from archival museum specimens. Newly obtained DNA sequence data is analysed from a variety of mitochondrial and nuclear loci, including 92 mitogenomes assembled through the approach of next-generation sequencing of pooled genomic DNA. The resulting trees are used to test previous morphological- and molecular-based hypotheses of weevil relationships and classification schemes. Mitogenomic-derived trees reveal topologies that are highly congruent with previous molecular studies, but that conflict with some morphological hypotheses. Strong nodal support strengthens inferences into the relationships amongst most weevil families and suggests that the largest family, the Curculionidae, is monophyletic, if the subfamily Platypodinae is excluded.

Introduction (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Erirhininae) The name “Rice Water Weevil” applies both to a particular species of weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel, which is one of the most serious pests of cultivated rice (Oryza sativa) in the world, and to a larger group of similar weevils that live on aquatic grasses in the New World and are real or potential rice pests as well. While this protocol deals specifically with L. oryzophilus, the diagnostic key makes provision also for recognising other relevant rice water weevils at group and genus level, so as to facilitate their detection at ports of entry in Australia and the taking of appropriate steps to prevent them from establishing in the country.

Weevils are a diverse group of plant-feeding beetles and occur in most terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. This chapter documents the diversity and distribution of 295 weevil species found in the Canadian Prairies Ecozone belonging to the families Dryophthoridae (9 spp.), Brachyceridae (13 spp.), and Curculionidae (273 spp.). Weevils in the Prairies Ecozone represent approximately 34% of the total number of weevil species found in Canada. Notable species with distributions restricted to the Prairies Ecozone, usually occurring in one or two provinces, are candidates for potentially rare or endangered status. Résumé. Les charançons forment un groupe diversifié de coléoptères phytophages et sont présents dans la plupart des écosystèmes terrestres et dulcicoles. Le présent chapitre décrit la diversité et la répartition de 295 espèces de charançons vivant dans l’écozone des prairies qui appartiennent aux familles suivantes : Dryophthoridae (9 spp.), Brachyceridae (13 spp.) et Curculionidae (273 spp.).
