Introduction (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Erirhininae) The name “Rice Water Weevil” applies both to a particular species of weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel, which is one of the most serious pests of cultivated rice (Oryza sativa) in the world, and to a larger group of similar weevils that live on aquatic grasses in the New World and are real or potential rice pests as well. While this protocol deals specifically with L. oryzophilus, the diagnostic key makes provision also for recognising other relevant rice water weevils at group and genus level, so as to facilitate their detection at ports of entry in Australia and the taking of appropriate steps to prevent them from establishing in the country.

Weevils are a diverse group of plant-feeding beetles and occur in most terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. This chapter documents the diversity and distribution of 295 weevil species found in the Canadian Prairies Ecozone belonging to the families Dryophthoridae (9 spp.), Brachyceridae (13 spp.), and Curculionidae (273 spp.). Weevils in the Prairies Ecozone represent approximately 34% of the total number of weevil species found in Canada. Notable species with distributions restricted to the Prairies Ecozone, usually occurring in one or two provinces, are candidates for potentially rare or endangered status. Résumé. Les charançons forment un groupe diversifié de coléoptères phytophages et sont présents dans la plupart des écosystèmes terrestres et dulcicoles. Le présent chapitre décrit la diversité et la répartition de 295 espèces de charançons vivant dans l’écozone des prairies qui appartiennent aux familles suivantes : Dryophthoridae (9 spp.), Brachyceridae (13 spp.) et Curculionidae (273 spp.). Les charançons de cette écozone représentent environ 34 % du total des espèces de ce groupe présentes au Canada. Certaines espèces notables, qui ne se trouvent que dans cette écozone — habituellement dans une ou deux provinces — mériteraient d’être désignées rares ou en danger de disparition.

    Espino: Rice Water Weevil Relative to Field Borders in California 445 OCCURRENCE AND ABUNDANCE OF LISSORHOPTRUS ORYZOPHILUS (COLEOPTERA: CURCULIONIDAE) RELATIVE TO FIELD BORDERS IN CALIFORNIA RICE LUIS ESPINO University of California Cooperative Extension, 100 Sunrise Blvd., Suite E, Colusa, California, USA 95932 E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Field experiments were conducted during 2009 and 2010 on commercial rice fields in the Sacramento Valley of California to validate observations regarding the prevalence of im- mature populations of the rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), near field borders, and to assess their impact on yield. In 5 commercial fields, insecticide-treated and untreated plots were established 4.5, 30 and 60 m from one edge of the field. Soil core samples were collected on 2 dates and inspected forL. oryzophilus immatures. Rice yields were determined by harvesting 15 m2 plots in 2009 or 1 m2 per plot in 2010. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that in most locations, immature popula- tions were higher in plots 4.5 or 30 m from the field’s edge than in plots 60 m from the field’s edge. Yields from treated and untreated plots did not differ significantly. Linear regression of immature populations and rice grain yield per plot per location did not yield a significant, inverse density-yield relationship. Results indicate that border applications of insecticides for L. oryzophilus management are appropriate; however, growers are advised to inspect their fields to confirm

The antenna of parthenogenetic females and of both sexes of bisexual reproductive weevils consisted of the scape, pedicel, and 6 flagellar segments. Fe- males, regardless of mode of reproduction, had longer antennal segments than males. The 3 adult forms/genders can be correctly classified into their respective groups with a set of discriminant mathematical functions based on 4 morphological measurements of length or maximum width of segments of the antennae. For both sexes, 6 morphological sensilla types were found on the antennae, including hydrofuge scales I (hsI), trichoid sensilla (ts), 2 types of squamiform sensilla (ssI, ssII), tuft hairs (th), and Böhm bristles (Bb). No remark- able sexual differences in the types or distribution of sensilla were found on the antennae among parthenogenetic and both sexes of bisexual reproductive weevils, except for hsI. Both the length and basal diameter of hsI of females were significantly greater than those of the males.
