3 ABSTRACT This thesis is a study on the development and role of the Amitabha Buddhist Society Malaysia (PABAM) which is located in Malaysia. The survey on the influence of the administration and management of various activities carried out by PABAM which are comprised of education, culture, welfare, and cultivation serves as the focus of this study. This analysis aims to look at the developmental trends and role of PABAM in promoting Buddhist education in Malaysia. This thesis also discusses the society’s goal towards achieving the Model of Chin Kung’s Four Holy Aims which comprise of (1) to restore Buddhism through traditional Buddhism education, (2) to encourage and develop the use of Classical Chinese language widely, (3) to expand the concept and the spirit of family tiesset out in the cultural tradition of the Chinese, and (4) to promote multi-religious and cultural education. This could transform and resolve global conflicts and maintain global security. The objective of this thesis is aimed at reviewing the extent of the development and role of PABAM in Malaysia and the main reasons of PABAM’s application of the model of Chin Kung’s Four Holy Aims to particularly benefit the believers and the local community. The research method of this thesis used both qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative methods include library research methods, observation and interview sessions; whilst quantitative methods were carried out through questionnaire surveys among the devotees of PABAM. This thesis uses the new Structural Functionalism Theory, the AGIL model which consists of four main factors, namely A: Adaptation, G: Goal Attainment, I: Integration, and L: Latency. The results of this study reflected PABAM’s information on how to implement and apply the Chin Kung model in the process of development and role of Buddhism in Malaysia and the main reasons of PABAM in applying the model. One of the major activities that marked the focus of PABAM in serving humanity through religion is its establishment of Dizigui School in the Philippines for the less fortunate and striving towards a policy of free education in the institution. The establishment of the institution shows the concern of PABAM that has transcended geographical boundaries. The researcher is of the view that with PABAM’s extended relations with the international community, it may be able to contribute in efforts of facing human crisis and global issues along with forces of international organizations such as the United Nations Human Rights Council. Through the international exposure, it is believed that it can further contributed to PABAM’s identity as a much more recognized religious organization among the Chinese community in Malaysia. Chapter 1 Introduction As a Chinese Buddhist in Malaysia, I have been unconsciously entangled in a historical process of the making of modern Buddhism. There was a Chinese temple beside my house in Penang, Malaysia. The main deity was likely a deified imperial court officer, though no historical record documented his origin. A mosque serenely resided along the main street approximately 50 meters from my house. At the end of the street was a Hindu temple decorated with colorful statues. Less than five minutes’ walk from my house was a Buddhist association in a two-storey terrace. During my childhood, the Chinese temple was a playground. My friends and I respected the deities worshipped there but sometimes innocently stole sweets and fruits donated by worshippers as offerings. Each year, three major religious events were organized by the temple committee: the end of the first lunar month marked the spring celebration of a deity in the temple; the seventh lunar month was the Hungry Ghost Festival; and the eighth month honored, She Fu Da Ren, the temple deity’s birthday. The temple was busy throughout the year. Neighbors gathered there to chat about national politics and local gossip. The traditional Chinese temple was thus deeply rooted in the community. In terms of religious intimacy with different nearby temples, the Chinese temple ranked first, followed by the Hindu temple and finally, the mosque, which had a psychological distant demarcated by racial boundaries. I accompanied my mother several times to the Hindu temple. Once, I asked her why she prayed to a Hindu deity.

Brown. It is being done on behalf of the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training. I'm Charles Stuart Kennedy. Well, Bill, let's start at the beginning. Can you tell me when and where you were born and something about your family? BROWN: Alright. I was born on September 7, 1930, at the hospital in Winchester, Massachusetts, because there was no hospital in Lexington, Massachusetts, where I grew up. My family and I considered that Lexington, Massachusetts, was, indeed, “the birthplace of American liberty” - which was the town slogan. We thought that this was more than a slogan. The place of my birth imbued me with certain attitudes, given the fact that we considered that we were at the center of the American Revolution and that it all began there. In my early years I didn't realize that the Revolution began in other places as well and about at the same time. Secondly, I would say that I grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. That is, I grew up in East Lexington, Massachusetts. There was quite a divide between the center of the town of Lexington, where the more affluent, establishment people lived, and those of us who Interview with Ambassador William Andreas Brown http://www.loc.gov/item/mfdipbib001330 Library of Congress were from East Lexington, on the Arlington County line.
