The key sources used in putting this work together are the annual Reports on Educational Institutions in the Caucasus Educational District, which provide data on the region’s schools run by the Ministry of Public Education, and the Reports of the Chief Procurator of the Holy Synod, which contain information on the region’s parochial schools. -

Their significance dilates not only because well organised misfeasance bars them from justice, but also because of sociological and psychological aspects involving far-reaching consequences. In this respect, the extensive destruction brought about by the Armenian Genocide and the substantive occupation of Armenia’s landmass by its astonishingly hostile enemies will remain a multifarious international subject impregnated with significant longevity. Undoubtedly, the intensity of the issue in motion will gather momentum until a categorically justifiable settlement is attained. A broad reconstruction programme appears to be the most reasonable way forward. PREAMBLE 1st. PRELUDE TO GENOCIDE Encompasses the periods referred to as the Armenian Massacres; mainly covering the years 1894 - 96 and Adana 1909. Some titles in the bibliography record the earlier international treaties that failed to protect the Armenians. Only a small number of works have been included, predominantly relevant to this period. -

This part of the set covers the period 1900–1917. The authors drew upon a set of works covering pre-revolutionary pedagogy, as well as a pool of contemporary Russian scholarly literature. In conducting the research reported in this paper, the authors employed both general methods of research, including concretization and summarization, and traditional methods of historical analysis. Use was made of the historical-situational method to explore particular historical facts in the context of the era under study in conjunction with various neighboring events and facts. -

Riegg: Claiming the Caucasus: Russia’s Imperial Encounter with Armenians, 1801-1894 (Under the direction of Louise McReynolds) My dissertation questions the relationship between the Russian empire and the Armenian diaspora that populated Russia’s territorial fringes and navigated the tsarist state’s metropolitan centers. I argue that Russia harnessed the stateless and dispersed Armenian diaspora to build its empire in the Caucasus and beyond. Russia relied on the stature of the two most influential institutions of that diaspora, the merchantry and the clergy, to project diplomatic power from Constantinople to Copenhagen; to benefit economically from the transimperial trade networks of Armenian merchants in Russia, Persia, and Turkey; and to draw political advantage from the Armenian Church’s extensive authority within that nation. Moving away from traditional dichotomies of power and resistance, this dissertation examines how Russia relied on foreign-subject Armenian peasants and elites to colonize the South Caucasus, thereby rendering Armenians both agents and recipients of European imperialism. Religion represented a defining link in the Russo-Armenian encounter and therefore shapes the narrative of my project. Driven by a shared ecumenical identity as adherents of Orthodox Christianity, Armenians embraced Russian patronage in the early nineteenth century to escape social and political marginalization in the Persian and Ottoman empires. -

Image not found or type unknown White Sea Mission JÓN HJÖRLEIFUR STEFÁNSSON Jón Hjörleifur Stefánsson, M.A., is a Ph.D. candidate, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam The White Sea Mission was a Russian church unit that operated from 1912 to 1926. Territory and Statistics1 Period: 1912–1926 Territory: Governorates of Arkhangelsk, Kazan, Kostroma, Nizhny Novgorod, Vologda, and Yaroslavl (from 1925) Membership: 170 Churches: 9 Organizational History The White Sea Mission was organized in 1911 and started operating as 1912 commenced.2 It became part of the Russian Union.3 The mission comprised the Governorates of Arkhangelsk, Kazan, Kostroma, Nizhny Novgorod, and Vologda. No headquarter address is listed.4 The territory was cut off from the Middle Russian Mission, except Kazan Governorate, which came from the Ural Mission.5 At the end of the first quarter, the membership was 26.6 Initial officers were Director K. L. Schamkov and Secretary-Treasurer of Sabbath School and Missionary Departments P. Brandt.7 In 1913, at the European Division Council at Budapest, commencing October 30, it was decided to divide the Russian Union into the East and West Russian Unions. The changes took effect January 1, 1914.8 The White Sea Mission became part of the East Russian Union.9 Due to the Russian Civil War, reports from the Russian unions are missing from the Seventh-day Adventist Yearbook from 1918 to 1921. In 1920 the North Russian Union was organized and the White Sea Mission became part of it. An address was listed for the first time: Bolschaya Pokrovka 52, Q. 3, Nizhny Novgorod.10 In 1925 the Yaroslavl Governorate (from the Northwest Russian Conference)11 was added to the territory description. -
