The food drive bags have been delivered. At the weekend, most city households received Broadway Radiology’s invitation to donate non-perishable food items for this Saturday’s city-wide collection. Part of Palmerston North’s Christmas advent calendar for the past 25 years, the annual food drive to replenish the Salvation Army and Methodist Social Services foodbanks is looking for a bumper harvest. ‘‘I know there’s a need. People come in to us every week requir- ing help and advocacy,’’ Sallies’ corps officer Stewart Lee said. He would like to make Saturday a celebration worthy of 25 years of community giving. With 28,000 food collection bags distributed to letterboxes, Lee was hoping for a better result than last year when only 6000 of the marked bags were returned. Organisers would also like to see a boost in the amount of donated breakfast cereals, even if they were already among the most contributed items ‘‘A couple of times during the year we almost ran out. Palmerston North residents are being offered free roman blinds to cover up the windows in their cold kitchens. Ian Harman, the Director of Abbey Musical Theatre’ s Dusty, which runs at The Auditorium from November 24 to December 10, says Dusty Springfield changed the face of music for white soul singers and laid the foundaon for vocalists such as Adele and Amy to follow. Ian was aracted to direct Dusty, the musical, because “it’s an incredible story about an amazing arst”. “She’s one of those remarkable spirits with an impeccable voice and I’ve loved her work over the years,” Ian says. He’s enjoyed direcng a very challenging script which he says is so different from his other work. The show is a series of vignees wrien like a movie instead of a stage show. “It’s montage driven with quick scenes and it jumps chasms of me. I have to put the jigsaw pieces together,” Ian says. “But it works and the show will engage the audience from start to finish.” Ian Harman emphasises that the theme of Dusty is friendship and love which resonates through the producon. It’s a celebraon of her life and her music he says. Many people know about Dusty Springfield and her musical legacy but fewareawareoftheinmate Dusty story. Ian believes it’s important for them to know more because of her iconic contribuon to popular music over a 30 year period. “She suffered from self-doubt, drug and alcohol addicon and her own sexuality. The show addresses all of those in a very honest way,” he says. “Her sexuality was very hard to deal with because of her high profile and society values at the me. That contributed to her substance abuse and not feeling loved.” Ian believes her life would have been different if she was accepted for who she was. However despite her issues, the show is a “great celebraon of an amazing arst with an incredible songbook.” Ian has parcular praise for Amy Hunt who plays Dusty. “It’s a huge role for her,” he says. “She has to go from the elaon of starng a career to heartbreak and depression and back again to tender scenes and triumphs at such venues as The Royal Albert Hall.” “Amy’s so talented she can do it. It’s a rollercoaster of a part.” For the audience at tomorrow’s opening night and for the season, Ian considers the show is an opportunity to find out about the real person. “There’s been a lot of tears in rehearsal, even from me, so take your ssues.” AMT is staging Dusty at The Auditorium, Centennial Drive from November 24 to December 10. Fifty years ago, a group of local folkies looking to create a space to share their music, and inspired by similar clubs in Wellington and Auckland, got their act together. On Friday night the Palmerston North Folk Club is hosting a party to celebrate. ‘‘It’s had its ups and downs over the years,’’ club president Rosemary van Essen said. ‘‘At one point in the 1980s it very nearly closed completely. But there have always been some ardent folkies keeping the music alive, and now we can celebrate this remarkable milestone.’’ While some big names in folk music have played at the club, such as the Hamilton County Bluegrass Band and Eric Bogle, the club has a his- tory of supporting local folk music acts, giving some bands their first real gig. The signature smokey kohl eyes and blonde bee- hive hair of singer Dusty Springfield is set for the Palmerston North stage. Famous for songs such as I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself, Son of a Preacher Man and Wishin’ and Hopin‘, Springfield with her troubled life, was the original pop diva. The Australian penned biopic Dusty - the Orig- inal Pop Diva opens on Abbey Musical Theatre’s Centennial Dr Auditorium this week. Show director, designer, choreographer and costumier Ian Harman said the musical covers the British singer’s life from childhood to her death from cancer in 1999. ‘‘It covers the highs and lows of her life, which was quite tumultuous really.’’ Born Mary O’Brien, and originally in a folk duo with her brother Tom, and later with him in a popular folk trio called The Springfields, the singer found her sexuality counted against her. Unlucky in love, and despite solo success, Springfield retreated from the pressures of fame and public expectation into drugs, alcohol abuse and clinical depression. She re-emerged in the 80s to record What Have I Done To Deserve This? with the Pet Shop Boys. ‘‘If you think of Amy Winehouse, sexuality issues, and how we treat people in general, her story is really quite current. It juxtaposes public perception with the singer’s private life.’’ Tackling the challenging lead role is local singer and Globe Award-winning actor for her role in Mamma Mia!, Amy Hunt. ‘‘Amy is incredible. She has an amazing voice and does great justice to the way Dusty sings as well as capturing the nuances of her character,’’ Harman said. ‘‘There are a lot of intense and con- trasting emotions as the show moves back and As a side dress Nitrogen uptake is essential for crop growth – and a well-timed side dress forth through her life. The Ashhurst Domain is a regional treasure. A campground and a playground, it’s a home to top quality football fields and to a cafe that’s rooted in the region’s settler history. It includes a wetland, bush remnant and signed nature trail, river access, and farmland, while hosting canine clubs, pony clubs, and more. Located on State Highway 3, at the confluence of the Manawatu and Pohangina Rivers, the domain marks the Ashhurst end of the Manawatu Gorge and the Volunteer Kerry gateway to the Pohangina Valley, Griffiths helping and is an historic Rangitne pa¯ rescue the rare site, with excellent river views. giant maiden hair fern.
