It was at this moment that I heard the murmur of running water and the playful song of a passing blackbird. Was I going crazy? Running water and blackbirds? What's going on, I thought? I didn't have time to answer my questions because right before my eyes, there was a boy, running across the bridge. In his hand, trailed a long piece of string, attached to a turquoise blue kite. Struggling to get his toy airborne, he saw me, for the first time. ' Oh, hello, have you come to play? Are you any good at kites?' The words tumbled from his mouth. 'I'm not sure, but I'll try. My name's Jemma. What about you?' 'My name's Jean and I'm seven years old. I have lots of older sisters and they're always bossing me about.' 'Well, I won't. Let's get that kite flying!' A few moments later, Jean and I were racing across a nearby field, with the kite stuttering above us. It was then that I glanced over my shoulder to see a man, sitting at an easel, painting. I stopped in my tracks. Could this be the famous Claude Monet himself or was I dreaming...? FREE MUFTI DAY! It is not a complete listing of all the agencies and organisations that work with young people in Palmerston North – but a list of community groups that we use as referral sources. • A 40 Year History
New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Association National Secondary School Cross Country Championships A 40 Year History Introduction The New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Association is proud to publish a forty- year history of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships. Participation in the event between 1974 and 2013 totals well over 10,000 athletes from all but a handful of schools from around the country. With an annual involvement of over 1000 students it has become one of the largest secondary school sporting events in New Zealand. The idea for this document was born during the 1995 NZSSCC Championships in Masterton. At this time (before the internet), results were published in a hard copy booklet. In this particular year the first three place getters in the individual, and three and six person team categories were published for the first twenty-one years of the events history. This accompanied the full set of 1995 results. After this event, the majority of results were published electronically. Unfortunately, many of these results were lost in the mid to late nineties because there was no dedicated NZSSAA website. Sincere thanks need to be given to Don Chadderton for providing the first twenty years’ of results. Without these early results a significant part of athletics New Zealand’s history would have eventually been forgotten. These include the 1974 performance of Alison Rowe, who would later go on to win both the 1981 Boston and New York marathons. As well as Burnside High School’s 1978 performance in the junior boys event where they completed the perfect three-man score of six points.

  • Palmerston North Regional Freight Hub Social Impact Assessment
Palmerston North Regional Freight Hub Social Impact Assessment Prepared for: KiwiRail Prepared by: Kirsty Austin Independent Consultant MNZPI, MEIANZ Date: 20 October 2020 Executive Summary A social impact assessment was undertaken to assess the effects (positive and adverse) on people and communities from the activities that will be enabled by the Notice of Requirement (NoR). The categories of social effects applied to the assessment were based on the IAIA principles for social impact assessment. A scale of effect ranging from high positive to high negative was applied. The relevant categories were: • quality and amenity of the environment • people’s way of life • the community • income and employment Social effects were considered at two levels to reflect the different types of social effects that communities will experience. The local impact area incorporated the Freight Hub where the community will be directly affected by land-take, and area surrounding the Site where the community will be affected by changes in amenity and connectivity. The wider impact area covered the area most likely to experience employment-related, housing supply and connectivity effects, without the amenity effects the local impact area will experience (Palmerston North City and Manawatū District). Construction phase A high-level assessment of social effects from the construction phase was undertaken and a conservative approach applied to determining the significance of construction effects, using the concept design prepared for the NoR. The main social effects anticipated from the construction phase are: • a reduction in the quality and amenity of the environment as a result of increased noise levels and changes to the landscape / visual character over a lengthy construction phase.
