The original European settlers in New Zealand were predominantly British and they developed an education system modelled on the British system, with strong links to British universities. Now in the 21st century, the New Zealand system is quite independent and has a character of its own. New Zealanders are by history and by nature, innovative, outward looking and creative.

New Zealand has a world reputation in Information and Communications Technology and has pioneered a number of initiatives in this field. The 'Americas Cup Satellite Mapping System' was developed in Dunedin, New Zealand. The expertise of the New Zealand film industry is clearly portrayed in the special effects of Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, "King Kong" and Andrew Adamson's “Narnia”, all of which were filmed in New Zealand.

International PISA research shows that New Zealand students perform with the very best internationally. New Zealand's English language based education system equates with the best in the world. Curriculum documents are forward thinking and the country's 'National Certificate of Educational Achievement' has attracted widespread international attention. Students are assessed through a mixture of internal (school based) and external (national examination based) assessment which focuses on the skills that students need to acquire in a modern world. Each student receives a New Zealand 'Record of Achievement' which provides a detailed record of the skills a student demonstrates. Qualifications can be added to when a student moves into the tertiary sector or the workforce. It encourages life-long learning.

WELLINGTON

Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, is located in the centre of the country at the southern end of the North Island. It is a three hour flight from eastern Australia and around a ten hour flight from most places on the Pacific Rim.

Wellington is consistently voted New Zealand's most liveable city. Wellington's amphitheatre of harbour and hills dictates its compact form. Nearly everything is within easy walking distance.

The Wellington region is a collection of five cities and districts (Wellington, Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua and Kapiti). It offers a wide variety of landscapes – from bays and beaches to rolling hinterland – and a matching number of work and lifestyle options. Approximately 180,000 people live in Wellington City; 450,000 in the five cities that collectively make up greater Wellington.

Wellington enjoys a mild climate (if at times a bit breezy) with over 2000 hours of sunshine a year and an average daily summer maximum temperature of 22°C. It enjoys more sunshine hours than Auckland, Melbourne and London and less rain than Auckland and Sydney.

Wellingtonians are outward looking, and are the most educated (and highly paid) in New Zealand. Wellington is a multicultural and international city. More than 20 percent of residents are bilingual and some 25 percent were born outside the country.

Wellington boasts a network of high-calibre tertiary institutions, high schools and language schools.

AUCKLAND

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city with a population of over 1.4 million people. It is the business hub of New Zealand with many companies having Head Offices in the city.

Auckland is located on a narrow isthmus of land with the Waitemata harbour on one side giving access to the Pacific Ocean and the Manakau Harbour on the west side opening into the Tasman Sea. . The separation of the two harbours is as little as one kilometre at one point. The city sits astride approximately 50 extinct volcanic vents. The most recently active was Rangitoto Island which was believed to have been formed about 700 years ago.

Auckland has been named the “City of Sails”, such is the popularity of sailing amongst the population. There are numerous yacht marinas within the harbour bays.

It is a very multi-cultural city with the largest Polynesian population (Maori and Pacifica) of any city in the world. There is also a large Asian population, predominantly Chinese and Korean.

The climate in Auckland can be described as “Mediterranean” with warm summers (22-28°C) and very mild winters (average daily maximum 14.5°C). The sea has a great moderating effect on temperature.

It is a beautiful city full of life and interest.

ISENZ represents Massey University (North Shore), AUT University, the Kingsland Institute, Auckland Grammar School and Macleans College.

10 CHRISTCHURCH

Christchurch is the largest city (population 360,000) in the South Island and the third largest urban area in New Zealand. It is located near Bank's Peninsula on the eastern side of the island. It is serviced by an international airport and the Port of Lyttelton.

Christchurch was established by English immigrants in 1848 and many signs of its English origin are still clearly visible today, especially in the architecture of its older buildings and in the schools in the inner city. The city has a strong education tradition and is the home of Canterbury University and Lincoln University. Sport is also a popular pursuit. The Canterbury Crusaders is probably the most successful provincial rugby team in the world.

The city lies on the eastern fringe of the Canterbury Plains, a rich agricultural area with sheep farming, dairying, grain production, grapes, crop and fruit growing. The Southern Alps lie to the west of these plains. The ski field at nearby Mount Hutt is popular in winter.

Summers are generally warm (20-25°C) and can be frequently quite hot (30°C or over). Winters are colder than in the North Island (5-15°C) with overnight frosts quite common and snow on rare occasions.

ISENZ represents Canterbury University, Burnside High School and Riccarton High School.

DUNEDIN

The city of Dunedin was established by Scottish colonists in 1848. It is now the South Island's second largest city with a population of 140,000.

The discovery of rich gold deposits in the province in 1852 led to rapid growth of the city and at one time it was New Zealand's largest city. The farming industry is now the prime source of revenue for the city although tourism also brings in considerable numbers. The popular holiday resorts of Queenstown and Wanaka are just two hours away by road.

Dunedin is serviced by an airport with regular domestic flights to Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown. Port Chalmers is a busy port.

Dunedin treasures its Scottish history. Many of its buildings reflect its grand history, including Otago University, the Dunedin Railway Station and several old churches. Otago University is New Zealand's oldest university and has a Medical School with an international reputation. Otago Boys’ High School is claimed to be the oldest boys' state school in the Southern Hemisphere.

Summer days average about 20°C while winters average 10°C. Overnight frosts in winter are quite common and the city does experience snow on occasions.

TAURANGA

Tauranga is one of New Zealand's fastest growing cities with a population of 120,000. Its popularity relates to two things primarily. The port of Tauranga is a major export point for fruit, farm and forestry products. Secondly, its climate and beaches make it a very popular holiday and retirement destination.

It is located in the Bay of Plenty about two hours drive from Auckland. Close by is Mount Maunganui, a very popular summer seaside resort. Tauranga is just 40 minutes drive from Rotorua, New Zealand's best known geothermal resort.

Summers in the region are warm, averaging 24°C, and winters are mild with daily winter maximum temperatures averaging 15°C.

The area is a prosperous farming area, with kiwifruit orchards abundant and dairying and forestry are both major producers.

12 NEW PLYMOUTH

New Plymouth is the provincial capital of Taranaki province. The city has a population of 51,000.

It is a beautiful city, set on the coast of northern Taranaki and on the northern side of Mount Taranaki. This 2400m extinct volcano is a beautiful sight on a fine day.

The city was established with migrants from the southwest of England in 1841, just a year after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, which established New Zealand as a British Colony.

It is now a thriving provincial centre, supported by a very prosperous dairy industry, and is the base for the New Zealand oil, gas and petro-chemical industry. Oil and gas are produced from on-shore and off-shore wells in the region. Taranaki is one of the most productive dairy farming regions in New Zealand. Products are exported through the Port of New Plymouth. The city is also serviced by a domestic airport.

Summer daytime temperatures average 20-22°C while winter day maximums average 14°C in July.

The larger cities of Wellington and Palmerston North are within easy reach, just 1 or 2 hours drive away, and daily flights to other centres depart from Wanganui Airport. The climate is temperate with summer temperatures from 18-25°C (November to April) and winter temperatures 4-14°C (June to September).

Wanganui is a quiet provincial centre resting between the sea and the National Park. Its early importance has left the city the legacy of a strong Maori cultural identity, elegant colonial buildings and a long tradition as an educational centre. The city is home to six secondary schools as well as Wanganui UCOL where a degree level Fine Arts programme is offered. UCOL's Computer Graphic Design degree programme is based here. NAPIER & HASTINGS

The twin cities of Napier (57,000) and Hastings (62,000) are located in the sunny east coast province of Hawke's Bay in the North Island of New Zealand. These cities are a mere 20 km apart.

Napier is famous for its Art Deco architecture originating from the rebuilding of the city centre in the 1930s, following a major earthquake in 1931. The area surrounding Hastings City is the fruit bowl of New Zealand, known for the production of apples and stone fruit, grapes and wine. Napier Boys’ High School was opened in 1872 and is one of the oldest boys’ schools in New Zealand. It has a proud record of academic achievement, sporting prowess, cultural excellence and grounding in traditional values. The school is a New Zealand Super Eight School and prides itself on providing high quality educational experiences for its International Students.

The New Zealand Government Education Review Office reported in 2007:

“Napier Boys’ High School students achieved academic results well above the national means in all three levels of the NCEA exams.”

We welcome International Students as part of our school community and enjoy seeing them develop their language and social skills while they are at the school. Our Board has set a maximum of 20 International students in any one year. They have also set a maximum of 5 – 7 students from any one country. We aim to give the International students the best possible experience in New Zealand and we believe that limiting the number of students to just 20 allows us to do this. With only between 5 and 7 students of any one nationality the students’ English abilities improve very rapidly. They use English in the classroom and then talk with their kiwi friends, in English, at interval and lunch time. The International students are placed in home stays where the only language spoken is English. They are using their English all day every day so their spoken abilities improve very rapidly. Those who gain a place at the school are therefore privileged with a unique educational experience in a genuine atmosphere of learning.

NBHS observes and is bound by the Code of Practice for International Students as published by the Minister of Education: http://www.minedu.govt.nz.

As a traditional boys’ school we place emphasis on academic success. This is reflected in the importance placed on the classroom environment, homework, examinations and staff development. The school also enjoys a high level of success in music, sport and drama.

We convey traditional values and attitudes through strict discipline, formal assemblies and high expectations. Teachers expect high standards of punctuality and courtesy. Students are expected to dress neatly in the school uniform at all times.

Above all, Napier Boys’ High School is a school that is enjoyed by students, staff and the greater school community.

Our aim is for our International students to achieve the best possible academic results, improve their English, make lifelong Kiwi friends and enjoy their time in New Zealand.

Whether it is music lessons, debating or performing in our 500–seat theatre, we encourage participation.

We offer complete peace of mind to our international parents. Our campus provides the students with three meals per day, all laundry, a stationery shop, our school uniform shop plus we have a café where students can buy snacks to enjoy at leisure. With three adults living in every boarding house, we are very proud to say that all of our students are very well looked after.
