AMERICAN INSTITUTE JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: Editorial Associate DEPARTMENT: Marketing Communications LOCATION: Campus

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Editorial Associate is responsible for the overall execution, content and completion of AFI’s written materials in digital and print form and works in tandem with the design team on layout and visual assets. In addition, the Editorial Associate serves as writer, copy editor and proofreader responsible for accurate, high quality written materials in a consistent AFI voice that supports the Institute’s brand, mission and programs.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES: • Research, write, copy edit, proofread and finalize materials for a wide variety of printed AFI publications that include, but are not limited to, the annual AFI Board of Trustees program reports, the annual AFI Conservatory catalog, discipline-specific showcase and commencement program booklets, AFI DOCS festival program books, AFI FEST presented by Audi, AFI Life Achievement Award Tribute Book, AFI newsletters (AFI Alumni, Directing Workshop for Women, Insiders, Members, Silver Theatre) and AFI Silver Preview as well as festival quick guides. • Research, write, copy edit and proofread online feature stories and news items for AFI.com and American Film™ blog. • Research, write, copy edit, proofread and finalize Mar-Com materials including, but not limited to press releases, fact sheets, bios, Institute history, presentations, talking points and executive briefing documents. • Write, copy edit and publish messages on AFI social media platforms. • Establish detailed timelines for editorial content, layout and production and work across the organization to adhere to these timelines. • In collaboration with the Mar-Com, Creative Services and Web teams, develop graphic layouts for AFI publications and online content. • Review materials for accuracy, AFI Editorial Style Guide adherence and message consistency. • Evaluate, maintain and propose updates to the AFI Editorial Style Guide for Chief Marketing Officer’s consideration and approval. • Develop and maintain editorial style guides for programs of the Institute as needed. • Collaborate with the Communications Strategist to ensure timely and accurate content for AFI.com and all of the Institute’s online assets. • Collaborate with the AFI Advancement, AFI Catalog, AFI Conservatory, AFI DOCS, AFI FEST, AFI Mar-Com, AFI Productions and AFI Silver teams to find and develop stories, messaging and materials. • Research the AFI Archives for materials and stories to include in American Film. • Oversee the development and content of any AFI-related books or publications produced by any third parties to ensure they meet AFI standards. • Oversee any third party writers and proofreaders as necessary. • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED: • Bachelor’s degree required; Masters degree preferred in English or Cinema Studies. • Minimum five years of experience as an editorial and/or corporate communications writer with copy editing, proofing and fact-checking responsibilities. • Minimum two years of online writing experience. • Excellent oral and written communication skills including strong grammatical and proofreading abilities. • Extensive and cohesive writing and editing skills, preferably related to film and television. • Superior ability to fact-check, copy edit and proofread for absolute accuracy. • Superior knowledge of AFI Editorial Style Guide, Associated Press Style and/or New York Times Style. • Must be able to produce high volume, high quality, effective communications tailored to the AFI “voice” as directed by the Chief Marketing Officer. • Strong leadership, time management and multi-tasking skills, coupled with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision. • Extensive knowledge of film history. • Comprehensive project management abilities. • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. • Successfully able to collaborate with all departments/levels of the organization and outside third parties in a highly professional manner. • Proficient in both PC and Mac with strong knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat and Filemaker Pro. • Proficient in social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. • Proficient in content management systems such as WordPress. Basic knowledge of HTML. • Ability to work calmly under pressure. • Personal integrity and the ability to inspire confidence and trust.

SUPERVISION: The Editorial Associate performs all duties and responsibilities under the guidance and supervision of the Communications Strategist.
