Harvey* This Article focuses on the oft-neglected intersection of racially skewed outcomes and anti-competitive markets. Through historical, contextual, and empirical analysis, the Article describes the state of Hollywood motion-picture distributionfrom its anti- competitive beginnings through the industry's role in creating an anti-competitive, racially divided market at the end of the last century. The Article's evidence suggests that race-based inefficiencies have plagued the film distribution process and such inefficiencies might likely be caused by the anti-competitive structure of the market itself, and not merely by overt or intentional racial-discrimination.After explaining why traditional anti-discrimination laws are ineffective remedies for such inefficiencies, the Article asks whether antitrust remedies and market mechanisms mght provide more robust solutions.

  • The Cinema of Oliver Stone
Interviews Stone on Stone Between 2010 and 2014 we interviewed Oliver Stone on a number of occasions, either personally or in correspondence by email. He was always ready to engage with us, quite literally. Stone thrives on the cut- and- thrust of debate about his films, about himself and per- ceptions of him that have adorned media outlets around the world throughout his career – and, of course, about the state of America. What follows are transcripts from some of those interviews, with- out redaction. Stone is always at his most fascinating when a ques- tion leads him down a line of theory or thinking that can expound on almost any topic to do with his films, or with the issues in the world at large. Here, that line of thinking appears on the page as he spoke, and gives credence to the notion of a filmmaker who, whether loved or loathed, admired or admonished, is always ready to fight his corner and battle for what he believes is a worthwhile, even noble, cause. Oliver Stone’s career has been defined by battle and the will to overcome criticism and or adversity. The following reflections demonstrate why he remains the most talked about, and combative, filmmaker of his generation. Interview with Oliver Stone, 19 January 2010 In relation to the Classification and Ratings Administration Interviewer: How do you see the issue of cinematic censorship? Oliver Stone: The ratings thing is very much a limited game. If you talk to Joan Graves, you’ll get the facts. The rules are the rules.

The Glitterball (dir. Harley Cokeliss, 1977) Lesson by Michael Aitchison, Teach First English, Key Stage 3 In this lesson, students study the character of the ‘glitterball’, and how it reacts to the life on our planet. This discussion leads to an investigation into how we might start to understand the unknown, and how we can try to recognise danger. Students will then construct a creative piece of writing based on the learning of the lesson, contextualising the events of the film to show a critical reading of the text. Students are given the opportunity to consider how we interact with unknown ideas and concepts, and how to recognise the difference between safety and danger. Lesson Objective You will need… • To identify key moments of the film The Glitterball which inform the alien's ability to The Glitterball DVD survive and adapt to its new surroundings, and make inferences about the character's Post-it notes personality. Optional: access to Curriculum Links I.T. suite (for production of • Read critically through studying setting, plot, survival guides) and characterisation, and the effects of these. • Knowing the purpose, audience for and context of the writing and drawing on this knowledge to support comprehension. 1 Activities TRAILER: What is the glitterball? • Why YOU Should Be an English Major
Why YOU should be an English Major You’ll be able to communicate your ideas effectively. This is what employers want the most – people who can communicate clearly. Impress your employer with your ability to communicate, and you’ll get promoted. You’ll also sound smarter than everybody else. You’ll be able to learn new tasks and ideas. A liberal arts education teaches you how to learn, not how to do a specific job. Your employer will provide on-the-job training. Besides, the hot jobs of 20 years from now haven’t even been thought of yet; major in English, learn how to learn new job skills, and stay employed. You’ll be prepared for med school, law school, business school… Being an English major teaches you how to think critically. Graduate schools in every field are more interested in your ability to analyze situations and make connections between concepts than in your ability to memorize lists. You’ll get a good job. Major scientific, technological, industrial, and financial companies like to hire English majors. They want employees who can analyze problems, think up creative answers, and communicate those answers to coworkers. And an English degree teaches you to do all these things. You’ll earn lots of money. Well, maybe not as much as science graduates, but the 201 201 Payscale College Salary Report listed salaries for popular careers for English majors that ranged from $ to $ . 5- 6 40,000 76,000 You’ll move up the company ladder. Your English major taught you how to analyze problems, think creatively, synthesize intelligent solutions, and communicate those solutions to your bosses and coworkers.
