The Polish railways are currently facing huge changes aimed at increasing their competitiveness and building a strong market position. Rail transport is one of the most important areas of the Polish economy. It contributes to the development of the country and the quality of life – it has a significant impact both in passenger and freight transport. Strengthening the role of rail transport in the integrated transport system of the country is a strategic task of the state. The implemented investments aim at an appropriate targeting Photo: Ministry of Infrastructure of development and shall contribute to increasing the competitiveness of the railways as a means of transport. The transport sector is to a large extent part of the EU’s investment policy and long-term development strategy. Construction of a modern transport network, providing access to all regions of the European Union, is a basic condition for increasing the competitiveness of the European transport system. The main objective of the national policy, and at the same time the priority, is to increase transport accessibility, improve the safety of traffic participants and improve the efficiency of the transport sector by creating a sustainable, coherent, innovative and user-friendly transport system in the national, European and global dimension. The title of the publication “We are changing the Polish railways” fits in well with the tasks undertaken by the Ministry, aimed at improving the condition of passenger and freight rolling stock, continuation of the programme of station investments and investments in IT solutions. I am convinced that as a result of the efforts made, Polish railways will be even more willingly chosen by passengers, and the implementation of infrastructure investments will have a positive impact on the economic development of our country, but also of other EU Member States.
