President’s Message Dear Fellow Members,

The summer of 2019 was truly one to remember. After a miserable and flood-ridden Spring, the weather turned beautiful from the start of the Summer Solstice right through to Labour Day making it so enjoyable to be at the lake that we all love.

In my first year as your new president I was able to witness first hand the countless hours spent by our dedicated volunteers that go in to all the events that the USLA puts on for the benefit of its members and guests. Whether it was the Craft Sale, the Kids Fishing Derby, Annual Film Presentation, The Stoney Lake Paddle, Swing Dance, The Regatta or the Family dances, none of it would be possible without the tremendous amount of work that goes on behind the scenes in making those events possible.

In terms of service to our lake community, the marking of Rocks and Shoals and environmental stewardship come to mind in just some of the ways that the USLA also benefits its members. And so on behalf of the entire membership of the USLA I want to express my enormous gratitude to all those that contribute year in and year out into making our cottage seasons on Upper Stoney so memorable and enjoyable.

There are simply too many of you to list by name but know that you are all truly appreciated. As I mentioned at this year’s annual meeting, the cost of membership will be going up for the 2020 season. Our membership cost has been $75 for over 15 years and the time has come for an increase to keep up with inflation. I would also like to take this opportunity to clarify our membership guidelines: Family Memberships should be purchased by all families on Upper Stoney where the parents are at least 30 years or older. Membership should not be based on a per cottage basis but rather by individual family. We would also like to encourage single members over the age of 30 to purchase a membership at the reduced rate of $75. Please encourage your neighbours to purchase a membership if they have not done so in the past. It is only through a strong membership that we can continue to offer the services for the benefit of all cottagers on Upper Stoney and continue to maintain the “home base” of our association, the USLA pavilion.

As many of you know the Pitblado Family will not be organizing the 2020 regatta. I want to thank John and his entire extended family for having put on so many exciting and memorable regattas over the past 14 or so years. You have all left big shoes to fill. I want to take this opportunity to place a Call For Volunteers for the 2020 Regatta. Please reach out to me at the email listed if you can be of assistance as we form an organizing committee for next year’s event.

Wishing you all a happy and safe winter season, be assured that the work of the USLA continues in the off- season ensuring a happy cottage experience for everyone next year.

All the best,

Julian 6 The Bulletin ~ Fall / Winter 2019

Thanks to Sue McComb for sharing these interesting lake pictures. What is starry stonewort (SSW)? • a fast spreading aquatic invasive macro alga (not a weed) • forms large, dense mats 0.5>10m in depth • anchors by clear Þlaments which produce small, white, star shaped bulbils which are reproductive organs • forms as mounds that can grow to or above the surface of the water during it’s peak growing season, mid July to mid September,

Starry stonewort spreads quickly • spreads by fragmentation or by dispersal of the star-shaped bulbils • doubles in area it occupies in a single season • out competes all other aquatic species • impacts the lake’s biodiversity by displacing native aquatic plants that provide food and shelter for native invertebrates, Þsh and wildlife.
