The 2020 season was sadly anything but normal as the COVID-19 pandemic overshadowed our daily lives. It also cancelled, or rather postponed, all of our beloved annual USLA traditions. No Dances, No Paddle, No Regatta, No Swimming Lessons, No Fishing Derby and No Fireworks to name a few of the many activities that USLA members have come to know and love over the years. As you know, the decision to cancel these events and not operate the pavilion for the 2020 summer season was a difficult one to make; but one that was ultimately necessary in order to maintain the safety of our community. And yet, rather than be beaten by the virus, we chose, as a lake community, to rise to the challenge and find a way forward despite the challenges that it presented. Our annual meeting, held for the first time virtually through the wonders of technology, enabled us to conduct the business of our association uninterrupted. I was delighted to see so many of our members attend our ZOOM annual meeting, with over 130 attendees logging in. This is truly a testament to the lasting support and commitment of our strong base of members. Our environmental advocacy, led by our environment director, Jacquie Ouellette, also continued in earnest, as you will read in her report to the membership. So, in short, while COVID-19 may have negatively impacted the social calendar for USLA members this year, the work of the Association continued nevertheless, and we thank you for your continued support of these efforts. Sadly, at the time of writing a second wave of the disease is severely limiting my hopes for a return to “normal” any time soon. It is difficult to predict at this time what next summer will look like. Our hope, as your executive, is that we will be able to return to a full offering of events in 2021 but as of now, all we can do is wait to see how matters develop. In the interim, we will continue to keep you informed of any decisions your Board of Directors make and for our plans for next year as soon as we know them. Take care, remain safe and I hope to see you all next Spring. Best Wishes, Julian Pope President, USLA Merry Christmas and Season’s Greetings to all - stay safe Best wishes for a happier, healthier and more friendly New Year 6 The Bulletin ~ Fall / Winter 2020 WELL, THEY WERE QUITE THE SPRING / SUMMER / FALL SEASONS, WEREN’T THEY! USLA Fireworks has always been a community-driven event. Volunteers from the lake community coupled with Displays marking the Victoria Day holiday or Canada Day generous donations from corporate and private sources were cancelled across the province.
