Degree of Doctor of Philosophy THE ORGANIC CLOVIS: A SINGLE CONTINENT-WIDE CULTURAL ADAPTATION By Christopher Andrew Hemmings May 2004 Chair: Ken Sassaman Major Department: Anthropology The Clovis culture is a continent-wide phenomenon exhibiting a high degree of uniform behavior and patterned resource exploitation irrespective of localized environmental constraints that typically circumscribe historically known societies. A state of the art specialized technological adaptation facilitated a generalist subsistence adaptation that is without an analog in historically or ethnographically known cultures. The Clovis cultural adaptation was a direct response to unique environmental settings that existed during the Pleistocene. The Clovis culture does not represent a unique cultural manifestation any more than each culture is unique. Clovis appears fimdamentally different simply because we lack anything with which to effectively compare it. Data from 246 Early Paleoindian sites with preserved organic remains are assembled to document patterns in resource preferences and exploitation. Artifacts made from identifiable elements of extinct taxa are considered the most reliable indication of X direction action. In sum, 352 species of plants and animals have been recovered at Early Paleoindian sites across North America. One-hundred sixteen of those species have clear evidence of utilization by Early Paleoindians. This represents a tremendous jump in our understanding of Clovis diet breadth and resource selection patterns. Clovis people had a clear preference for mammoth and mastodon. That said, exploitation of now extinct megafauna was simply a portion of an effective generalist foraging adaptation that covered unglaciated North America. A large portion of the technological adaptation involved formal bone and ivory tools that are typically underreported or under-appreciated as part of the Clovis toolkit. Nearly 250 formal bone and ivory tools in 45 different forms are now documented across the continent.

    The Little Clovis Point that Wasn’t Leo Pettipas Manitoba Archaeological Society The projectile point illustrated in Figure 1 was surface-found at FaMi-10 in the Upper Swan River valley of Manitoba (Fig. 2) in the 1960s. It is made of Swan River Chert, is edge-ground, triangular in outline, and seems to be “fluted” on one face. To all appearances it looks like an Early Indigenous (“Palaeo-Indian”) Clovis point, except for one thing – it’s very small: it’s less than 4.0 cm long, whereas “full-grown” Clovis points when newly made can reach as much as 10.0 cm in length. Archaeologist Eugene Gryba has cautiously classified it as a McKean point, and in size and shape it is indeed McKean- like. However, the bilateral grinding it displays isn’t a standard McKean trait, so I have chosen to orient this presentation around the Clovis point type. Fig. 1. (left)The miniscule point from FaMi-10. Actually, bona fide diminutive Clovis points are not unprecedented; several good examples (Fig. 3) were archaeologically excavated in company with typical Clovis points at the Lehner Mammoth site in Arizona. The centre specimen in Figure 3 is 3.6 cm long, slightly less than the corresponding measurement taken from the Swan River artefact. In the end, a kind of syncretism and symbiosis resulted. Today, given that the Spanish colonial system recognized that the Pueblos and mission Indians had a legal status, land grants issued during that period protects their lands against the new settlement pattern that followed: that of the Anglo-American.

    1 Annotated Atlatl Bibliography John Whittaker Grinnell College version June 20, 2012 Introduction I began accumulating this bibliography around 1996, making notes for my own uses. Since I have access to some obscure articles, I thought it might be useful to put this information where others can get at it. Comments in brackets [ ] are my own comments, opinions, and critiques, and not everyone will agree with them. The thoroughness of the annotation varies depending on when I read the piece and what my interests were at the time. The many articles from atlatl newsletters describing contests and scores are not included. I try to find news media mentions of atlatls, but many have little useful info. There are a few peripheral items, relating to topics like the dating of the introduction of the bow, archery, primitive hunting, projectile points, and skeletal anatomy. Through the kindness of Lorenz Bruchert and Bill Tate, in 2008 I inherited the articles accumulated for Bruchert’s extensive atlatl bibliography (Bruchert 2000), and have been incorporating those I did not have in mine.
