This multi-scale approach allows the development of models at a broad continental scale that are then tused to inform processes occurring on more localized, regional scales. In particular this dissertation attempts to understand the nature of the Clovis population expansion across the North American continent, and the interplay between this expansion and cultural transmission processes that combine to generate the spatiotemporal structure of the Clovis archaeological record we see today. First, using the spatial distribution of radiocarbon dates across the continent I show that the Clovis expansion was a population expansion originating from the ice-free corridor, most likely sometime after ca. 11.6k 14C yrs BP. Second, I develop a mathematical model of cultural transmission that is designed to explain the generation of variation in the archaeological record. The model predicts that the average size of projectile points should decrease through time at a predictable rate, due to the accumulation of copying errors. When combined with the expansion model, the combined model predicts that Clovis points should get smaller at a predictable vi Marcus J. Hamilton: Quantifying Clovis Dynamics rate, on average, as the population expanded across the continent. Results show that indeed, the mean size of Clovis points reduces through time at the rate predicted. Third, I analyze the Clovis record of the central Rio Grande Valley and adjacent mountains. Results show that the Clovis occupation of the region was relatively long-term, with evidence of the repeated use of the landscape, most notably evidenced at the Mockingbird Gap Clovis site near Socorro, New Mexico. This long-term occupation is consistent with the predictions of the initial expansion model. Moreover, an analysis of Clovis projectile point size in the central Rio Grande Valley meets the predictions of the cultural transmission model, in that the points, while small, are exactly the predicted size given the linear distance of the central Ro Grande Valley from the mouth of the ice-free corridor. When combined, these results demonstrate that the Clovis archaeological record is the archaeological residue of a population expansion, which is evidenced both by the spatial distribution of radiocarbon dates across the continent, and in the spatiotemporal gradient of projectile point sizes. On a broader scale, this dissertation provides an analytic framework for exploring the cultural dynamics of the archaeological record through time and space, highlighting both the development of mathematical models, and the use of statistical metrics to test the predictions of these models. vii Marcus J. There are several reasons for this situation and lack of scholarly enthusiasm on the part of Iranian archaeologists seems to be the most imperative one. Concerning the history of Paleolithic surveys and excavations conducted in Iran, three distinct phases are recognizable. First, from the beginning of the twenty century to the 1980 when numerous field missions were executed in this region all by western institutes, second phase observes a twenty years gap in the Paleolithic studies hence; only few surveys could be performed in this period, and the third phase starts with the reopening of the Iranian fields to the non-Iranian researchers, which led to the survey and excavation of handful of new Paleolithic sites. This article reviews Paleolithic researches conducted in Iran since the beginning of twenty century to the present time. The ancient history of the region includes some of South Asia's oldest settlements and some of its major civilizations. The earli- est archaeological site in the subcontinent is the palaeolithic hominid site in the Soan River valley. Soanian sites are found in the Sivalik region across what are now India, Pakistan, and Nepal. The Mesolithic period in the Indian subcontinent was followed by the Neolithic period, when more extensive settlement of the subcontinent occurred after the end of the last Ice Age approximately 12,000 years ago. The first confirmed semipermanent settlements appeared 9,000 years ago in the Bhimbetka rock shelters in modern Madhya Pradesh, India. Box 180 Tilghman, MD 21671 2003 ii ABSTRACT This report summarizes the results of an archaeological survey conducted along the Atlantic shorelines of both Accomack County and Northampton County, Virginia. Accomack and Northampton Counties represent the southernmost extension of the Delmarva Peninsula. The study area encompasses all of the lands adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean and shorelines associated with the back barrier island bays. A shoreline survey was conducted along the Atlantic Ocean to gauge the erosion threat to the archaeological resources situated along the shoreline. Archaeological sites along shorelines are subjected to numerous natural processes which hinder site visibility and limit archaeological interpretations. Summaries of these natural processes are presented in this report. The primary goal of the project was to locate, identify, and record any archaeological sites or remains along the Atlantic seashore that are threatened by shoreline erosion. The project also served as a test of a prehistoric site predictive/settlement model that has been utilized during other archaeological surveys along the Chesapeake Bay shorelines and within the interior sections of the Delmarva Peninsula. The prehistoric site predictive/settlement model is presented in detail using archaeological examples from Maryland and Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

After initial remarks about the history of Prehistoric studies and culture Sequence, detailed observations are made about how changes in raw material of utilization, experienced from time to time, and consequent improvements in techniques tool-manufacture and tooltypes themselves led to changes in subsistence and settlement patterns of Stone Age hunter-gatherer groups. The review concludes with remarks highlighting the need for identification of regional settlement systems, functional interpretation of lithic of non- assemblages, study of present-day use of stone for various purposes, and recognition utilitarian dimensions of Stone Age technology.     COGNITIVE ARCHAEOLOGY: IN SEARCH OF THE EARLIEST SYNTACTIC LANGUAGE-USERS IN HIMALAYA Maheshwar P. Joshi Recent scientific studies unfold that neural structures bearing on intonation of speech have a deep evolutionary history traced to mammal-like reptiles called therapsids found in the Triassic period (∼252.17 mya, million years ago). Therefore, these structures were already present in the primates. It goes to the credit of Homo sapiens who developed it to the extent that humans are defined as symbolling animals, for language is the most articulated symbolism. Cognitive archaeology makes it clear that it took hominins millions of years to develop a syntactic language. Stratigraphically controlled and securely established artefact-bearing sites of the Middle Palaeolithic Arjun complex in the Deokhuri Valley, West Nepal, provide firm dates for the presence of the earliest syntactic language speakers in Himalaya from 100 ka to 70 ka (thousand years ago). Introduction Study of prehistory of language falls in the domain of cognitive archaeology and this discipline ‘is still in early development’ (Renfrew 2008: 67). To the best of my information, no scholar studying South Asian prehistory has addressed this issue despite the fact that South Asia is very rich in material culture vis-à-vis prehistory of language (see for details, Joshi 2014: in press-a; Joshi 2017: in press-b). Since my primary concern in this essay is Himalaya in general and Central Himalaya in particular, I will focus on the earliest syntactic language-users in the context of Central Himalaya.
