He also ob- served it in several mesosiderites. The mineral was recently mentioned to occur in Vaca Huerta (Fleischer, et al., 1965) and in Odessa (El Goresy, 1965). We have found rutile in the meteorites Allegan, Bondoc, Estherville, Farming- ton, and Vaca Muerta; although nowhere an abundant phase, it appears to be rather widespread. Of the several meteorites in which it was observed, rutile is the most abundant in the Farmington L-group chondrite. There it occurs in fine lamellae in ilmenite. The ilmenite is only sparsely distributed within the . meteorite although wherever it does occur it is in moderately large clusters - up to 0.5 mn in diameter - and it then is usually associated with chromite as well as rutile (Buseck, et al., 1965), Optically, the rutile has a faintly bluish tinge when viewed in reflected, plane-polarized light with immersion objectives.

    Geologic Resources Inventory Scoping Summary Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Geologic Resources Division Prepared by Trista L. Thornberry-Ehrlich National Park Service August 7, 2010 US Department of the Interior The Geologic Resources Inventory (GRI) provides each of 270 identified natural area National Park System units with a geologic scoping meeting and summary (this document), a digital geologic map, and a geologic resources inventory report. The purpose of scoping is to identify geologic mapping coverage and needs, distinctive geologic processes and features, resource management issues, and monitoring and research needs. Geologic scoping meetings generate an evaluation of the adequacy of existing geologic maps for resource management, provide an opportunity to discuss park-specific geologic management issues, and if possible include a site visit with local experts. The National Park Service held a GRI scoping meeting for Apostle Islands National Lakeshore on July 20-21, 2010 both out in the field on a boating site visit from Bayfield, Wisconsin, and at the headquarters building for the Great Lakes Network in Ashland, Wisconsin. Jim Chappell (Colorado State University [CSU]) facilitated the discussion of map coverage and Bruce Heise (NPS-GRD) led the discussion regarding geologic processes and features at the park. Dick Ojakangas from the University of Minnesota at Duluth and Laurel Woodruff from the U.S. Geological Survey presented brief geologic overviews of the park and surrounding area. Participants at the meeting included NPS staff from the park and Geologic Resources Division; geologists from the University of Minnesota at Duluth, Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey, and U.S. Geological Survey; and cooperators from Colorado State University (see table 2).

Alanen Professor Department of Landscape Architecture School of Natural Resources University of Wisconsin-Madison Madison, Wisconsin 53706 June 1985 OBJECTIVES During the early 1980s this investigator participated with two other individuals in preparing a report on the early agricultural history of the Apostle Islands. 1 The report presented some background information on the overall agricultural development of the Apostles, but especially focused upon Basswood, Hermit, and Sand Islands. Several sources of information were used in preparing this first report. These included original Land Office and homestead records, census data, newspaper accounts, interviews, pictorial information, and field surveys. The report included on the following pages seeks to provide a more complete overview of early Apostle Islands agriculture by expanding the study to include islands other than Basswood, Hermit, and Sand (Figure 1). The additional islands considered in this report are Bear, Ironwood, Michigan, otter, Oak, Raspberry, South Twin, and Stockton. In addition, an effort has been made to provide some background information on an early farmstead (situated on Section 9, Township 51N, Range SW of Bayfield County) that once was built on what is now a part of the Apostle Islands mainland unit. Finally, additional information on two pre-emptors who made claims on Basswood Island was unearthed while doing this study; therefore, the subsequent account includes the new data.

Mr.Wil- liam McDonald sent in the histories of the steamers shown on the last pages of this issue. Mr.Dexter Goodison, of Erieau, Ontario, presented us with the plans of a modern, welded-steel gill netter. Frank Slyker brought in his completed plans of the U.S.Michigan (later the gunboat "Wolverine"). The American Shipbuilding sent us the plans of the flat top "Wolverine" which was formerly the "Seeandbee". All this is very gratifying, and confirms our belief that through regional cooperation there is hardly any end to what we may achieve in the field of Creat Lakes history.

    MI/DEQ/WRD-12/034 MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY WATER RESOURCES DIVISION AUGUST 2012 STAFF REPORT MICHIGAN BEACH MONITORING YEAR 2011 ANNUAL REPORT INTRODUCTION The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), Surface Water Quality Monitoring Program, is summarized in the January 1997 report entitled, “A Strategic Environmental Quality Monitoring Program for Michigan’s Surface Waters” (Strategy) (MDEQ, 1997). The objectives of the beach monitoring component of the Strategy are listed below: 1. Assist local health departments to implement and strengthen beach monitoring programs. 2. Create and maintain a statewide database. 3. Determine whether waters of the state are safe for total body contact recreation. 4. Compile data to determine overall water quality. 5. Evaluate the effectiveness of MDEQ programs in attaining Water Quality Standards (WQS) for pathogen indicators. 1. ASSIST LOCAL HEALTH DEPARTMENTS TO IMPLEMENT AND STRENGTHEN BEACH MONITORING PROGRAMS Beach Monitoring The monitoring of beaches in Michigan is voluntary and is conducted by the local health departments. Health departments are required to comply with Michigan’s WQS according to R 333.12544 of the Public Health Code, 1978 PA 368 (Act 368), as amended. According to R 333.12541 of Act 368, a local health officer or an authorized representative of a local health department that conducts tests at bathing beaches is required to notify the MDEQ and other entities of the test results within 36 hours of conducting a test or evaluation. This rule also states that the local health department may petition the circuit court for an injunction ordering the owners of a beach to close the beach.
