The first data about algal and cyanobacteria species diversity was represented for the Arys River basin and compared it to freshwater algae patterns of the related mountain regions. Altogether 82 species were found in 28 samples of phytoperiphyton on 13 sampling stations of the Arys River and its tributaries. Diatoms prevail in studied algal flora. Bioindication characterize the Arys River waters as temperate, moderately oxygenated, fresh, neutral water affected by a low to moderate level of organic pollution, Class II-III of water quality. The pattern of algae and cyanobacteria diversity distribution depends on altitude and local climatic and environmental conditions. Bacillariophyta species was richest in high mountain habitats, green algae, cyanobacteria and charophytes avoid high mountain habitats and have negative correlation with altitude. These results can be used as indicator of environmental changes in the mountainous areas. Three floristic groups were recognized in the studied river communities corresponding to the upper, middle and lower parts of the watershed.

Scientists from more than 40 countries currently participate in the ICP Vegetation. The programme is led by the UK and coordinated by the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in Bangor. Mosses as biomonitors of atmospheric deposition of heavy metals Increased and excessive accumulation of heavy metals in the soil, ground water and organisms can cause retarded growth of trees and crops and increased levels of heavy metals in the food chain leading to man. One of the main benefits to be gained from studying heavy-metal fallout through moss analysis is that metals are accumulated by the moss, leading to much higher concentrations than in air, rain and snow.

  • Local Government and Economic Development in Kazakhstan By
Local Government and Economic Development in Kazakhstan by Madina Junussova A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Public Policy Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2017 Madina Junussova ABSTRACT The main objective of this dissertation is to understand the role of local government in economic development, with a focus on the cities and regions selected by the national government of Kazakhstan to be the drivers of national economic development by the Regional Development Program 2020. The dissertation presents three studies based on qualitative assessment of locally obtained evidence and locally produced data. The first essay examines administrative decentralization and studies how the Almaty city and Almaty region governments failed to use delegated urban planning for the management of urban development. The second essay challenges the fiscal system by exploring how the Almaty and Astana governments struggled to use national transfers provided for the implementation of national projects. The third essay focuses on political decentralization reforms and assesses the capabilities of elected representatives from Almaty, Astana, Shymkent and Aktobe city governments in managing urban transport based on public needs. Together, these three case studies provide a broader picture for understanding the productivity of the implemented administrative, fiscal and political reforms. It argues that the absence of a functioning decentralization strategy is leading to unexpected development outcomes and a lowering of public trust in local and national governments. The main contribution of the three studies is that they allow identification of key institutional weaknesses and obstacles faced by local governments in the management of local development in Kazakhstan.

The study of endangered relict woody plants is a key component of biodiversity conservation strategies. In this regard, the purpose of the study was to compare anatomical features of the vegetative organs of relict Sogdian ash (Fraxinus sogdiana Bunge) growing in river valleys of the Sharyn State National Park in the Almaty region. In 2020-2021 young individuals of Sogdian ash were sampled, in the valleys of the Sharyn and Temirlik rivers to study, their root, stem, and leaf anatomical features for the first time. The lower and upper epidermis of F. sogdiana leaves were thicker in individuals growing at the Sharyn site than at the Temirlik site. In contrast to that, the thickness of the mesophyll was thicker in leaves from the Temirlik site. The cross-sectional area of the conductive bundles of plants were larger in trees from the Sharyn site. The morphometric parameters of the stem also had different results. The diameter of the roots were twice as large in Sogdian ash trees growing at the Sharyn site, likely due to the growing conditions, since the soil of the Sharyn River valley is meadow, stony and pebbly, compared to the Temirlik River, which is a deposit of red clay mixed with crushed stone and rock remnants.
