Serving Royal Oak Since 1947 July 14, 2019 | Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Shrine Herald NATIONAL SHRINE OF THE LITTLE FLOWER BASILICA ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH We Will Be A Band Of Joyful Missionary Disciples. Thoughts from Monsignor McClory Dear Parish Family: The Good Samaritan and Unleash the Gospel This weekend we hear the story of compassion and charity in the story of the Good Samaritan. As we reflect on that outpouring of mercy, we can draw inspiration in all of our charitable efforts from this passage in Archbishop Allen Vigneron’s pastoral letter Unleash the Gospel: Evangelical Charity: Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:16 Our service to the poor and marginalized needs to be a clear witness to Jesus our Lord, not mistaken for humanist philanthropy. Catholics around the world and in our local Church have developed a remarkable network of charitable programs for health care, disaster relief, hunger alleviation, poverty reduction, refugee aid, family services, counseling, and help for people in every form of need. We must continue and intensify these works of service that manifest God’s love to those around us. … We need to ensure that in ministering to the material needs of others we are also responding to their spiritual thirst for God. Every Catholic charitable work must also be an authentic expression of Catholic faith. We must be unabashed to speak Read More from the name of Jesus and to invite every person to the fullness of life in him. The world needs the light that Fr. John McKenzie is in Christ alone. (Unleash the Gospel 8.4) Catholic Funeral and Cemetery Services here this Page 8 weekend Having lost both of my parents in the past three years, our family was blessed that they prepared several years (Continued on page 7) 2100 W. May 26, 2019 | Sixth Sunday of Easter Shrine Herald NATIONAL SHRINE OF THE LITTLE FLOWER BASILICA ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH We Will Be A Band Of Joyful Missionary Disciples. Thoughts from Monsignor McClory Dear Parish Family: What do we mean by the “Sacrifice” of the Mass? This weekend we will continue with week three of our homily series: “The Gift of the Mass.” We also refer to the “Sacrifice of the Mass,” especially in reference to the Liturgy of the Eucharist. This means that we are experiencing the one sacrifice of Jesus offered for the entire universe—for the forgiveness of sins. We don’t believe that in the Mass we are constantly “re-sacrificing” Jesus, but rather that the one eternal sacrifice of Jesus is made present here and now at the altar. To understand more fully the liturgy of the Eucharist, it’s helpful to understand the sacrificial system of the Old Testament. In gratitude to God, the people would offer to Him something of value. They would give Him their very best—the “first fruits”, not the “last fruits”— of the harvest. It was a way of expressing gratitude and offering something back to God. In the Book of Genesis, we are told of the high priest (and king) Melchizedek who brings the bread and wine. We see this action in the book of Genesis as a prefiguration of the Last Supper and Melchizedek is a Christ figure. Other forms of sacrifice emerged to atone for sin. We know that God commanded his people at Passover to offer a sacrifice before their Exodus from the slavery to Pharaoh.
