We Will Be A Band Of Joyful Missionary Disciples.

Thoughts from Monsignor McClory Dear Parish Family: The Good Samaritan and Unleash the Gospel This weekend we hear the story of compassion and charity in the story of the Good Samaritan. As we reflect on that outpouring of mercy, we can draw inspiration in all of our charitable efforts from this passage in Archbishop ’s pastoral letter Unleash the Gospel: Evangelical Charity: Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:16 Our service to the poor and marginalized needs to be a clear witness to Jesus our Lord, not mistaken for humanist philanthropy. Catholics around the world and in our local Church have developed a remarkable network of charitable programs for health care, disaster relief, hunger alleviation, poverty reduction, refugee aid, family services, counseling, and help for people in every form of need. We must continue and intensify these works of service that manifest God’s love to those around us. … We need to ensure that in ministering to the material needs of others we are also responding to their spiritual thirst for God. Every Catholic charitable work must also be an authentic expression of Catholic faith. We must be unabashed to speak Read More from the name of Jesus and to invite every person to the fullness of life in him. The world needs the light that Fr. John McKenzie is in Christ alone. www.shrinechurch.com July 14, 2019 7 More from Fr. John McKenzie Dear Parish Family, In this week’s column I want to share more of a “Short Biography” so that you might come to know me better. I was born in Detroit, MI on January 4, 1981. In Redford, MI I attended Our Lady of Grace School in Dearborn Heights. At age 11 I was baptized into the Catholic Faith. During this time, I was around so many different types of people of all colors. It forms who I am today. In 1994, I moved to St. Louis, MO to live with my grandparents. In 1999, then again in 2001, I had a conversion experience. In 2003 I decided, with the assistance of my Spiritual Director, to enter a discernment house in Rome called the Casa Balthasar. After having finished the two-year program, I decided to enter the newly founded Benedictine Community of Norcia, Italy. During those years, I was sent to Paris to learn French as well as entering the program of Philosophy and Formation at Conception Abbey and Seminary College in Conception, MO. In 2015, with the permission of my superiors, I lived four months at the ancient Abbey of Montecassino, in Cassino, Italy. After those four months I returned to Detroit, MI where I lived with my former confrere of seven years, Fr. Michael Suhy, now pastor of St. Louise de Marillac Parish in Warren, MI. In 2016, I entered Sacred Heart Major Seminary. In these past three years I have taken classes in Theology as well as various practical aspects regarding Diocesan priesthood. I was ordained with two others to the transitional Diaconate on Saturday, April 14, 2018. That summer I spent three months at Corpus Christi Parish in Detroit, MI. It was a great assignment as it was a very diverse group of people with over 15 different nations represented in the parish! From there I went to Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church in Orchard Lake, MI. I loved this parish as well! So much faith filled people are there! Lastly, I am thankful to God and Archbishop Allen Vigneron for assigning me to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower. I am delighted to work with Msgr.Bob McClory, Fr. Joe Lang, and Fr. John Kopson. It’s a great joy to be able to serve alongside such men of God! Last week after the 9:00 AM Mass, you showed me just how welcoming the Shrine community is to a new priest! I am thankful to the Hospitality Team as well as Dan Rajnicek, Facilities Director, for making the event happen! I was equally welcomed by our Hispanic community at the 4:00 PM Mass that same Sunday. Please keep me in your prayers as I enter the first month of being ordained a priest of Jesus Christ. Please know of my prayers for you and know, that as an Associate Pastor, I will do all that I can to help “Confirm you in your faith.” God bless you all! Fr. John McKenzie

Stewardship Thoughts Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

God’s law connects today’s First Reading and our Gospel from the evangelist St. Luke. In the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses points out to the ancient Israelites that keeping God’s law is doable for it is already in your mouths and in your hearts. In the Gospel, in the parable of the Good Samaritan, we hear Jesus encouraging us to express our love of God through love and mercy for our neighbor. For all Christians, love of God and neighbor are the two greatest commandments — and serve as the foundation for evangelizing through our acts of stewardship. One way to express the love of God is through our devout actions before and while partaking of the Holy Eucharist — the true presence of the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord and Savior. Receive Holy Communion regularly for the strength and courage to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and perform other Corporal Works of Mercy.

18 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica Grade School Service Learning Service Learning is a strong part of our religion curriculum. What is Service Learning? It refers to learning that actively involves students in a wide range of experiences which often benefits others and the community while also advancing the goals of a given curriculum. During the month of September, our second graders worked on their Service Learning project as they prepared for their second Sacrament of Initiation, Holy Eucharist. They also spent time learning about the first Sacrament of Initiation, Baptism, withFather Kevin Roelant teaching them in front of the Baptismal Font. The students also learned about how to make a card for someone and what the message in the card should be. They then made birthday cards for babies who were Baptized at Shrine and recently celebrated a birthday. This community outreach shares our Shrine spirit with the community. Here are some pictures of our second graders and their service learning.

Fifth graders worked hard in the science lab applying the information learned in class. They explored measuring the volume of liquids, regular, and irregular shaped objects using three different methods: basic calculation, beakers and graduated cylinders, and displacement. They then completed a “Mystery Matter” activity where they were challenged to identify unknown matter based on the properties of the objects, as described by a lab partner.

At Shrine Catholic Grade School we exemplify Christ by praying, learning, and growing together. At Shrine Catholic Academy we exemplify Christ as we reflect, challenge and aspire to become the middle school students and disciples we are called to be. At Shrine Catholic High School we exemplify Christ, by serving, succeeding, and leading through academics, athletics and the arts.
