We Will Be A Band Of Joyful Missionary Disciples.

Thoughts from Monsignor McClory Dear Parish Family: What do we mean by the “Sacrifice” of the Mass? This weekend we will continue with week three of our homily series: “The Gift of the Mass.” We also refer to the “Sacrifice of the Mass,” especially in reference to the Liturgy of the Eucharist. This means that we are experiencing the one sacrifice of Jesus offered for the entire universe—for the forgiveness of sins. We don’t believe that in the Mass we are constantly “re-sacrificing” Jesus, but rather that the one eternal sacrifice of Jesus is made present here and now at the altar. To understand more fully the liturgy of the Eucharist, it’s helpful to understand the sacrificial system of the Old Testament. In gratitude to God, the people would offer to Him something of value. They would give Him their very best—the “first fruits”, not the “last fruits”— of the harvest. It was a way of expressing gratitude and offering something back to God. In the Book of Genesis, we are told of the high priest (and king) Melchizedek who brings the bread and wine. We see this action in the book of Genesis as a prefiguration of the Last Supper and Melchizedek is a Christ figure. Other forms of sacrifice emerged to atone for sin. We know that God commanded his people at Passover to offer a sacrifice before their Exodus from the slavery to Pharaoh. They were instructed to offer the Paschal (or Passover) Lamb. They wouldn’t offer just any lamb, but PLEASE NOTE: a pure, unblemished lamb. They would eat the lamb Shrine's Rectory Offices will be closed on and place the blood of the lamb on the doorpost. All the houses marked with the blood of the lamb would Monday, May 27 in observance of the be protected from death. The last of the plagues (the Memorial Day holiday. There will be only cloud of death) would “PASS”-“OVER” those houses one Mass at 9:00 AM. marked with the blood of the lamb. Then in the New Testament, recall the words of John the Baptist when Jesus appears at the Jordan River: (Continued on page 7)

Today’s Scripture readings from the Acts of the Apostles and Book of Revelation emphasize the disciples’ commitment to Jesus’ cause and the glory of God. In the Gospel from St. John, Jesus blesses His disciples: Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. Our Lord’s peace-blessing still applies to us today. As disciples of Christ, we attain this gift of peace when we personalize Jesus in our lives and seek to find and do God’s will. In turn, we express His will through generous stewardship acts of giving in prayer, service, and generosity to our parish, the Archdiocese of Detroit, the Church universal, and our less fortunate brothers and sisters. In your daily prayer, please offer petitions of peace for those Christian brothers and sisters who are being persecuted, not only in our country, but throughout the world.

18 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica The Class of 2019 Clap Out was a huge success! This tradition, in its fourth year, is such a cool experience for all involved! The current grade school kids started chanting and cheering well before the drums started down the hall and the graduates were beaming ear to ear. It was also special to see many teachers also embracing their former students! This week is packed full of events for our graduates with Senior Ball, Honors Convocation, Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation! Take some time to say a prayer as they end this chapter in their lives and prepare for new horizons! And if you see a senior parent, offer them a hug! They are feeling the bittersweetness of this moment. Congratulations Class of 2019! We are very proud of you!

At Shrine Catholic Grade School we exemplify Christ by praying, learning, and growing together.
