Sacrament? How many times has Jesus calmed your temptations and anxieties while adoring Him in the Blessed Sacrament? How many times were you inspired to do something for God and His Church while adoring Him in the Blessed Sacrament? How many times has He given you His peace in rough moments in your life? 10 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica Eucharist Stories

This June we are celebrating the Eucharist—the Body and Blood of Jesus—by sharing our stories! We find healing and mission in Jesus' Eucharistic presence. It is most commonly associated with denominations which hold Mary in special esteem, particularly among Roman Catholics and Anglicans. Mary gardens can be any size, from a small indoor pot to a large plot of land outdoors. The statue of Mary is central and is surrounded by flowers, shrubs and trees associated with legends of Mary and may include benches and a location in which to light votive candles. Devotion is shown to Mary in two ways: through designing, building and maintaining the garden and through attendance, contemplation and prayer in the garden. In this way, Mary gardens are similar to the Buddhist tradition of Zen gardens, although Zen gardens are never dedicated to a specific person as Mary gardens are. Mary gardens originated among the and convents of medieval Europe. People in the Middle Ages saw reminders of Mary in the flowers and herbs growing around them and recalled stories associated with the various plants. The first reference to a garden specifically dedicated to Mary is that of St. Fiacre, the patron of gardening, in 7th century France. At his hospice for the poor and infirm, he planted a garden around the oratory dedicated to Mary. St. Mary’s Gold, another name for the calendula, is the first recorded instance of a flower named after Mary - found in a 1373 English recipe for a drink to ward off plague. Frances Crane Little established the first public Mary garden in the United States in 1932 at St. Joseph’s Church in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. She was inspired by the symbolic flowers and herbs she encountered during a visit to England. This garden inspired Edward McTague and John Stokes to establish their own Mary’s gardens in Philadelphia in 1951. These gardens served as a project to research flowers associated with Mary and to make seeds and information available to start Mary gardens throughout the United States. Almost any flower or herb can be used in a Mary garden, but several have specific Marian legends associated with them. Some of the more common include: ● Bluebells (Our Lady’s Thimbles) whose flowers resemble tiny thimbles and represent Mary’s working hands; ● Carnation (Mary’s Love of God) which is said to have bloomed at Christ’s Nativity; ● Columbine (Our Lady’s Shoes) which are said to have sprung up under Mary’s feet as she went to visit Elizabeth; ● Lily of the Valley (Our Lady’s Tears) which are said to have sprung up at the foot of the cross where Mary’s tears fell ● Madonna Lily which is the lily presented to Mary at the Annunciation; ● Marigolds which were placed around statues of Mary by early Christians in place of coins and were called Mary’s gold ● Ox-Eye Daisy (Mary’s Star) which legend says Melchior picked upon the arrival of Magi in Bethlehem because of its similarity to the star they had followed; this caused the door to the stable to open and reveal the Holy Family; ● Rose which symbolizes Mary herself; roses and lilies are said to have filled Mary’s tomb when it was opened by the Apostles; ● Rosemary, upon which Mary is said to have dried the clothes of the Child Jesus, causing a sweet aroma to be left behind on its branches; ● Snowdrops (Candlemas Bells) which are said to have bloomed on the day Mary presented Jesus in the Temple; ● Thrift (Our Lady’s Cushion) which is said to have made a place for Mary to sit during the Flight into Egypt; and ● Violets which are a symbol of Mary’s modesty, simplicity and humility.

Consider dedicating a portion of your yard to Our Lady this summer. It can provide a beautiful sport for your family to gather for prayer together and to consider how Mary serves as a model and guide for the Christian life.

16 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults We are called to be the Salt and the Light of the World! The image of salt is a very ordinary, everyday image. In the time of Jesus, salt was necessary for preserving meats and other foods, to keep them from spoiling. Salt also adds flavor and zest to food. But if it loses its power to preserve and if it loses its flavor, it is of no use. When Jesus says “you are the salt of the earth,” he is telling us that we have the task on this earth to preserve and to give flavor. We are to preserve the new life of grace He has brought to our world. And we are to give flavor, that is, meaning and spice to people’s lives. Salt enhances the quality of food. Being salt, we can contribute to enhancing the quality of others’ lives Jesus tells us “I am the light of the world.” He instructed us His disciples to go to all nations and peoples and to bring His light to them. From those first simple followers, the light of Christ spread through the Church to all the ends of the earth. And this light continues to spread today. This is our mission, whatever our state in life: to let the light of Christ shine through us wherever we go and whatever we do. This is done by living our faith, by putting it into action, especially by loving one another as Christ has loved us. How is Jesus calling you to be the salt and light of the world? By being salt we flavor other’s lives and by sharing the light of Jesus in words and deeds we are loving another as Christ has loved us. Is God asking you to stretch yourself and put the other first? Perhaps God is calling you to be a Sponsor in RCIA? We are in need of parishioners desire to be the salt and the light of the world. Being a Sponsor, you will know that you are fulfilling Jesus’ call to flavor the lives of others while loving them as He loves them. Please pray and see if God is calling you to Sponsor some lovely person in RCIA. Thank You, Ann Ferguson, [email protected] 248-291-8275 If you are wondering, or know someone who is thinking about becoming Catholic, we would be honored to walk with you in exploring the Catholic faith. You are welcome any time. If now is the perfect time for you, please feel free to contact Ann Ferguson @ 248-291-8275 or [email protected]
