This multi-case study, through a sample of students, entrepreneurs, and women, aims at exploring the daily agenda of Muslims and their unintentional role in shaping politics and society. The study examines critically that the literature on Islamist resurgence, and its transformation, is dominated by an emphasis on the struggle between seculars and Islamists. This study firstly problematizes how one assesses the many changes taking place in the Islamist trajectory, in the framework of secular/Islamic division, and then it disregards the tensions taking place within Islamic circles. Through focusing on inner circle debates, the study seeks to discover what is really changing in political Islam and what continues to be the same. The findings are twofold.

Prof. AYŞE OZİL Keywords: Circassians, Women, Activism, Nationalism, Hayriye Melek Hunç This thesis aims at exploring the elements of Circassian nationalism in the works of an important yet an under-researched woman activist of Circassian descent, Hayriye Melek Hunç. The study explores the notions of “homeland”, the importance of history-memory of Russo-Circassian Wars and the protection of a distinct Circassian identity in her writings. Doing that, it does not ignore the place of “women’s issue” in her works. Her approach towards the women’s issue and her opinions about Islamic women, in general, and Ottoman women in particular, will be conveyed. In these aspects, the study aims to contribute to a growing literature which emphasized women’s activism of the late Ottoman era, challenging the nationalist historiography which shows Ottoman women as passive and ignorant subjects of a static political entity. Regarding the socio-political changes which took place in the late Ottoman Empire, the study also aims at exploring the impacts of modernization by concentrating on the rise of nationalism and activism of one of the ethnic groups of the empire, the Circassian community. Increasing activism and agency, surely, were the consequences of this process.

    Keriman Halis Ece (1913-2012) Türkiye ve Dünya Güzeli, 1932 Keriman Halis Ece Tüccar Tevfik Halis Bey ve Ferhunde Hanım’ın ikinci çocukları olarak 16 Şubat 1913 yılında İstanbul’da doğmuştur. Dedesi Hurşit Bey Sultan Abdülaziz’in başmabeyncisidir. Ailenin büyüklerinden şeyhülislamlık yapmış bir kişiden de bahsedilmekle birlikte bununla ilgili kesin bilgiye ulaşılamamıştır. Ailenin kökleri ile ilgili farklı bilgiler olmakla birlikte Kafkas kökenli olduğunu söylemek mümkündür. Ailesinden sanat camiasında amcası operet bestecisi Muhlis Sabahaddin Ezgi, halası bestekâr Neveser Kökdeş gibi ünlü kişiler vardır. Erkek kardeşi Turgan Ece’de Galatasaray Spor Kulübü’nde önce futbolcu sonrasında da yöneticilik görevlerinde bulunmuştur. Keriman Halis’in annesinin rahatsızlığından dolayı 6 yaşına kadar büyükannesi, sonrasında dadısı ve mürebbiyesi tarafından yetiştirilmiştir. Mürebbiyesinden Fransızcanın yanı sıra piyano çalmayı öğrenmiştir. Lise öğrenimini İstanbul’da Fevziye mektebinde tamamlamıştır. Ata binmeyi ve yüzmeyi bilen Keriman Halis lise öğreniminden sonra Akşam Sanat Okuluna devam etmiş burada dikiş, nakış ve yemek konularında kendini geliştirmiştir. Lise öğreniminin devam ettiği dönemde babası ile katıldığı Galatasaray Balosunda Cumhuriyet Gazetesinin düzenlediği yarışmaya katılması konusunda gelen teklifleri babası kabul etmemiş ve babasının arkadaşları tarafından yapılan bir yıllık ikna çalışmaları sonucunda 1932 yılındaki güzellik yarışmasına katılabilmiştir. Cumhuriyet Gazetesi’nin 1929’dan itibaren düzenlediği güzellik yarışmalarında, 1929’da Feriha Tevfik Hanım, 1930’da | 1 Mübeccel Namık Hanım ve 1931’de de Naşide Saffet Hanım Türkiye Güzeli seçilmişlerdir. 1932 yılı başında Cumhuriyet Gazetesi tarafından dördüncüsü düzenlenen güzellik yarışması katılımın az olması nedeniyle gerçekleştirilememiştir. Belçika’da yapılacak olan Uluslararası Güzellik ve Zarafet Yarışması’na (International Pageant of Pulchritude) Türkiye’nin davet edilmesi üzerine Haziran 1932’de tekrar bir güzellik yarışması düzenlenmeye karar verilmiştir.

It was then that Turkey transformed itself from a country of a socially Islamic nature based on the Ottoman Caliphate, to one in which republican secularism was forced on it, and in which the Republic engaged in a fierce conflict with the large majority of Turkish society and which also failed in its attempt to force this majority to abandon their Islamic traditions and conservative customs. Ataturk’s Social Revolution The revolution by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk to modernise Turkey brought with it many consequences for the Turkish people socially, religiously and politically.
