Master Tao-ming continued, “What do you call it?” The Master asked the monk, “What kind of The novice replied, ‘A sugar cookie.” Buddhist teachings have you read?” Master Tao-ming laughed heartily and said, “You The monk replied, “I have read the Yogacara can also lecture on the teachings of Yogacara!” teaching.” The method and direction of studying Yogacara The Master asked, “Can you lecture on this differ from that of studying Ch’an. Yogacara’s subject?” idealism emphasizes understanding and analysis, The monk declared, “I dare not.” whereas Ch’an does not. A Ch’an adept aims directly at the mind, attaining Buddhahood by seeing one’s own nature. Ch’an masters use humor in their speech and treat people with kindness. They do not like to present a stern face. Sometimes, when they talk about east, they are actually pointing west. Sometimes, when they strike or scold a student, they are actually expressing their loving kindness. Whereas a scholar of Yogacara employs ample verbal explanation to expound on the doctrine of Master Tao-ming picked up a sugar cookie, broke it idealism, a Ch’an practitioner only has to say ‘A in two, and asked, “The three worlds are nothing sugar cookie,” and the underlying implications but the mind’s manifestation; the ten thousand are conveyed. This alone is sufficient to express dharmas all arise from consciousness. -
Chan Buddhism During the Times of Yixuan and Hsing Yun
The JapaneseAssociationJapanese Association of Indian and Buddhist Studies Joumal ofJndian and Buddhist Studies Vol, 64, No. 3, March 2016 (261) Times of Chan Buddhism duringthe and Hsing Yun: Yixuan Applying Chinese Chan Principles to Contemporary Society SHIJuewei i} Lirlji Yixuan uttaXil( (d. 866) and Fo Guang Hsing Yun es)kZg:- (1927-), although separated by rnore than a millennium, innovatively applied Chan teachings to the societies in which they lived to help their devotees discover their humanity and transcend their existential conditions. Both religious leaders not only survived persecution, but brought their faiths to greater heights. This paper studies how these masters adapted Chan Buddhist teachings to the woes and conditions of their times. In particular, I shall review how yixuan and Hsing yun adapted the teachings of their predecessors, added value to the socio-political milieu of their times, and used familiar language to reconcile reality and their beliefs. Background These two Chan masters were selected because of the significance of their contributions. Lirlji Yixuan was not only the founder ofa popular Lirlji2) school in Chan Buddhism but was also posthumously awarded the title of Meditation Master of and Wisdom Illumination(HuizhaoChanshi ue,H", maeM)(Sasaki Kirchner 2oog, s2) by Emperor Yizong em7 of the Tang dynasty (r. 859-873). Hsing Yun, a very strong proponent ofHumanistic Buddhism, is currently the recipient of ls honorary doctorate degrees from universities around the world (Shi and Weng 2015). To have received such accolades, both Chan masters ought to have made momentous contribution to their societies. Although Yixuan and Hsing Yun had humble beginnings, they were well-grounded in Buddhist teachings. -

CONTINUING POLITICAL FORCE OF RELICS IN THE MODERN ASIAN SOCIETY: THE BUDDHA’S TOOTH RELIC AT FOGUANGSHAN Stacy Mann 11220046 [email protected] Prof. Benjamin Brose Asian 395 – Honors Thesis December 5th 2011 i CONTINUING POLITICAL FORCE OF RELICS IN THE MODERN ASIAN SOCIETY: THE BUDDHA’S TOOTH RELIC AT FOGUANGSHAN Introduction Some scholars have suggested that as Buddhism moved into the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, where there were many international connections and a spread of western ideas and science, it will became more separate from the state. Scholars such as Thomas DuBois, Mayfair Yang, and Vincent Goosaert have all discussed the move toward a more secularized state in Modern China, especially under the rule of the communist party, who viewed religion as an exploitative institution. Even before the period of Communist rule in China, when the nationalist party, the Guomindang (國民黨), controlled China, there was a move away from religions and religious practices that were seen as “superstitious”. After the Guomindang moved to Taiwan, they regulated religion, and tried to eliminate the participation of religion into public arenas, such as politics. These ideas suggest a move away from any “superstitious” practice, and a move toward a secularized state that may seek to control the religious organizations, but will not allow them any part in their government.1 Yet while I was studying in the South of Taiwan in 2010 I visited the Foguangshan monastery (佛光山寺) in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. There I was informed of and had the chance to see a tooth relic of the Historical Buddha, the Buddha who lived in India two thousand four hundred years ago. -

Abstract Since coming to power in 1949, the the Communist Party of CHina (CPC) has developed a state system for controlling religoin and using it to promote CPC aims. Since the rise to power of Xi Jinping in 2012, the system has been repurposed to support CPC aspirations for China to be recognzied as a great power. One of its activites is the global promotion of Buddhism as religion and culture. This essay has five sections. First, is a survey of the origins and development of the state system of religious control since the founding of the PRC in 1949. Second, is an overview of state’s international uses of Buddhism to further Chinese interests from the 1950s to the 2010s. Third, is an examination of the commitment in 2015 by PRC Buddhist establishment to globally promote Buddhism. Fourth, it is an overview of the modalities of Buddhism and their promotion around the world. Fifth, is an examination of the promotion as the local activities of a prominent monk. The conclusion considers the historical particularity of this promotion of national modalities of Chinese Buddhism as a universal religion and global culture. -

VENERABLE MASTER JY DIN SHAKYA , A BIOGRAPHY FORWARD BY REV . F A DAO SHAKYA , OHY The following story is the translation from the Chinese of a biography of VM Jy Din -- the Master responsible for the establishment of our Zen Buddhist Order of Hsu Yun. The article is straight journalism, perhaps a bit "dry" in comparison to some of the other Zen essays we are accustomed to encountering. The story of the story, however, is one of convergence, patience and luck -- if we consider “luck” to be the melding of opportunity and action. I have long wished to know more information about the founding master of our order and history of the Hsu Yun Temple in Honolulu. Like many of us, I have scoured books and websites galore for the merest mentions or tidbits of facts. Not being even a whit knowledgeable of Chinese language, any documentation in Master Jy Din's native language was beyond my grasp. I read what I could find -- and waited. I knew that some day I would stumble across that which I sought, if only I did not drive myself to distraction desiring it. Late in July of 2005, that which I had sought was unexpectedly delivered to me. By chance and good fortune, I received an e-mail from Barry Tse, in Singapore -- the continuance of a discussion we had originated on an internet "chat board." As the e-mail discussion continued, Barry mentioned an article he had found on a Chinese Buddhist website -- a biography of our direct Master Jy Din. He pointed out the website to me and I printed a copy of the article for my files. -
