Thank you for your love and support: none of this would have been possible without you. iv ABSTRACT UNCERTAIN BOUNDARIES DISPOSITIVE TECHNIQUES IN PRÉVOST’S NOVELS Benjamin Hillel Baker Gerald Prince Christophe Martin This thesis examines the relationship between part and whole in novels by Antoine François Prévost to question the modern assumption that prototypical novelistic narrative structure and dispositive structure (chapters, books, volumes, parts, installments, etc.) share the same points of articulation. In Prévost’s day, the combination of the unpredictable rhythm of publication in installments and the ever-present possibility of continuation made it difficult for authors and readers to identify a novel’s definitive conclusion. This uncertainty led to tension between a novel’s concrete parts and its imagined narrative whole, and that tension created what I have termed a segmentary esthetic that stands in contrast to both the more regularly serialized novels of the nineteenth century and to more recent single-installment novels. To support these hypotheses, I first investigate schemas of interaction between dispositive structure and narrative structure in Prévost’s novels that differ from modern formal expectations: pseudoworks (works- within-works) and narrative units that cross dispositive boundaries in the Mémoires d’un homme de qualité and the Voyages de Robert Lade, and interrupted publication and unauthorized continuation in Cleveland and Mémoires d’un honnête homme. I then identify similar interactions in two of Prévost’s more formally modern novels La Jeunesse du Commandeur and Histoire d’une Grecque moderne. En virologie clinique, la métagénomique virale qui repose sur le séquençage aléatoire de type shotgun de l’ensemble des génomes viraux d’un échantillon (le virome), est une approche prometteuse pour la détection et l’identification sans a priori de potentiels nouveaux pathogènes. Cependant, son utilisation reste encore marginale en raison de l’importante contamination des viromes par les séquences nucléiques de l’hôte qui masque le signal viral, limite la reconstruction de génomes viraux et requiert une profondeur importante de séquençage, générant ainsi un cout élevé. Ces dernières années, de nombreux protocoles reposant principalement sur des étapes de filtration/centrifugation et digestions enzymatiques, ont été développés pour diminuer cette contamination humaine avec un succès limité notamment dans le cas de biopsies cliniques. Dans ce contexte, ce travail de thèse avait pour objectif d’améliorer l’approche de métagénomique pour le diagnostic clinique de maladies infectieuses virales en augmentant le ratio de séquences pathogène/hôte par déplétion des acides nucléiques humains.

BRUSSELS.—After the striking victories gained at Turin in 1902, and at Milan in 1906, by the representatives of modern art in Belgium, one had hoped for similar triumphs at the Brussels Exhibition of 1910, and it is as incomprehensible as it is deplorable that this modern school of Belgian art, whose influence has been felt in all the countries of Europe, should have been unrepresented there. As M. Robe has written in “L'Art Moderne,” “Now or never was the moment to appeal to the public for a verdict upon our work. I grant that the authorities have rather looked askance at the products of our brains, and so far have not entrusted to us the elaboration of plans for public works and buildings which are destined to form permanent records of their day. Berthold Over (PhD), born in 1964, is a researcher in the project PASTICCIO. Ways of Arranging Attractive Operas at Greifswald University. He previously worked and taught at Mainz University where he was member of projects on musical mobility and migration as well as on Roman cantatas in Handel’s times. His research focuses mainly on 17th- and 18th-century music as evident from numerous publications. Gesa zur Nieden (Prof. Dr.), born in 1978, teaches musicology at the University of Greifswald and at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media. Her research and publications focus on the early modern musicians mobility, on spaces and build- ings for music, on intermedial dimensions of music and on the reception of Wagner after 1945.
