  • Greetings 1 Greetings from Freehold: How Bruce Springsteen's
Greetings 1 Greetings from Freehold: How Bruce Springsteen’s Hometown Shaped His Life and Work David Wilson Chairman, Communication Council Monmouth University Glory Days: A Bruce Springsteen Symposium Presented Sept. 26, 2009 Greetings 2 ABSTRACT Bruce Springsteen came back to Freehold, New Jersey, the town where he was raised, to attend the Monmouth County Fair in July 1982. He played with Sonny Kenn and the Wild Ideas, a band whose leader was already a Jersey Shore-area legend. About a year later, he recorded the song "County Fair" with the E Street Band. As this anecdote shows, Freehold never really left Bruce even after he made a name for himself in Asbury Park and went on to worldwide stardom. His experiences there were reflected not only in "County Fair" but also in "My Hometown," the unreleased "In Freehold" and several other songs. He visited a number of times in the decades after his family left for California. Freehold’s relative isolation enabled Bruce to develop his own musical style, derived largely from what he heard on the radio and on records. More generally, the town’s location, history, demographics and economy shaped his life and work. “County Fair,” the first of three sections of this paper, will recount the July 1982 episode and its aftermath. “Growin’ Up,” the second, will review Bruce’s years in Freehold and examine the ways in which the town influenced him. “Goin’ Home,” the third, will highlight instances when he returned in person, in spirit and in song. Greetings 3 COUNTY FAIR Bruce Springsteen couldn’t be sitting there.

Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage.

  • Introduction
Introduction In January 1997, two Sydney Morning Herald journalists produced a brief account of what they perceived to be the most important rock and roll sites in Sydney.1 Their sense of the city's rock histories extended to places of local mythology well beyond popular music's production and consumption: five star hotels as frantic sites of adoration of the Beatles ensconced within; psychiatric hospitals where career paths merged with psychosis; and migrant hostels as sites of cross-cultural ambitions. The article was a rare acknowledgement of the spaces and places of performersand fans' interaction. This thesis constitutes an extended response to the article's implicit desire to recognise alternative accounts of Australian popular music connected to broader city narratives. In analysing the rock music venues of Sydney as sites of interaction between musicians, fans and government, I am principally concerned with three interrelated themes: • The social construction of live performance venues from 1955 amidst the parallel construction of the performer and fan as an 'unruly' subject; • The industrial development of live performance: the live rock venue within commercial/economic structures; and • The dialectical tension of the above in reconciling the state's desire for manageable 'cultural citizens' with broader cultural policy (support for live rock and roll within arts policies). A more detailed explication of these strands is undertaken in Chapter One, in providing a theoretical overview of relations between popular culture and the state, and specific media/cultural/popular music studies approaches to cultural practice and policy. My personal interest in the histories of live rock venues parallels an increased 1 Jon Casimir and Bruce Elder, 'Beat streets - a guide to Sydney's rock and roll history', Sydney Morning Herald, 9th January, 1997, pp.29-30.

Dreamboats, Boybands and the Perils of Showbiz: Pop and Film, 1956-1968 David Buckingham This essay is part of a larger project, Growing Up Modern: Childhood, Youth and Popular Culture Since 1945. More information about the project, and illustrated versions of all the essays can be found at: https://davidbuckingham.net/growing-up-modern/. The first appearance of rock and roll music in film seems to have been something of an afterthought. When Richard Brooks’s Blackboard Jungle was released in 1955, the producers made a last-minute decision to accompany the opening and closing credits with an obscure B-side called ‘Rock Around the Clock’ by Bill Haley and the Comets. The record had been released the previous year with little success. Although an instrumental version of the tune does appear in the middle of the film, Blackboard Jungle is barely concerned with rock or pop music at all. In one notable scene, the delinquent teenagers trash their teacher’s treasured collection of jazz records; while in another, one of the students, Gregory Miller (played by Sidney Poitier) performs a gospel song with his black class-mates. However, the inclusion of Haley’s track made it an immediate chart hit; and it also contributed to the remarkable success of the film with teenage audiences. Indeed, the use of ‘Rock Around the Clock’ seems to have encouraged dancing and even wilder behaviour in cinemas, both in the US and in the UK. When the film was shown in South London in 1956, Teddy Boys in the audience reportedly rioted and slashed the seats; and this led to similar behaviour in cinemas around the country.
