Greetings 1 Greetings from Freehold: How Bruce Springsteen's
Greetings 1 Greetings from Freehold: How Bruce Springsteen’s Hometown Shaped His Life and Work David Wilson Chairman, Communication Council Monmouth University Glory Days: A Bruce Springsteen Symposium Presented Sept. 26, 2009 Greetings 2 ABSTRACT Bruce Springsteen came back to Freehold, New Jersey, the town where he was raised, to attend the Monmouth County Fair in July 1982. He played with Sonny Kenn and the Wild Ideas, a band whose leader was already a Jersey Shore-area legend. About a year later, he recorded the song "County Fair" with the E Street Band. As this anecdote shows, Freehold never really left Bruce even after he made a name for himself in Asbury Park and went on to worldwide stardom. His experiences there were reflected not only in "County Fair" but also in "My Hometown," the unreleased "In Freehold" and several other songs. He visited a number of times in the decades after his family left for California. Freehold’s relative isolation enabled Bruce to develop his own musical style, derived largely from what he heard on the radio and on records. More generally, the town’s location, history, demographics and economy shaped his life and work. “County Fair,” the first of three sections of this paper, will recount the July 1982 episode and its aftermath. “Growin’ Up,” the second, will review Bruce’s years in Freehold and examine the ways in which the town influenced him. “Goin’ Home,” the third, will highlight instances when he returned in person, in spirit and in song. Greetings 3 COUNTY FAIR Bruce Springsteen couldn’t be sitting there. -

Newsletter 2021 Season
Newsletter 2021 Season “Dartmouth” by Grace. THE SHADE OAK NEWSLETTER: 2021 SEASON When Emma announced I was going into ‘Lockdown’ at the end of March I must admit I thought it was a little extreme, as I’m not normally locked away to produce the annual Shade Oak Newsletter until late November. However, I was swiftly made aware that this was a different kind of lockdown that has changed all our lives to a greater or lesser extent. Even when the eagerly- anticipated vaccines and improved treatments are available, its effects on the economy will be significant, as will its impact on the fortunes of horse breeders of all nations. So, much though I would like to pen my usual few words about stallions, mares, foals and the joys of breeding NH horses, before rushing outside to leap on my trusty steed, Sir Francis, to charge across huge hedges and daunting ditches, it just can’t be that easy this year. Instead, I must give whatever insights I can conjure up (sometimes I really don’t know how I do it!) into the implications of several new factors on NH breeding in this country - namely Covid, Brexit and the Great British Bonus. In doing this I will weave an ingenious thread of storyline, so I’m told, that brings them all together such that you will surely recognise not only the wisdom of continuing to produce NH horses but also of using British-based stallions located at - yes, you’re on the ball today - Shade Oak Stud! Here we go… THE EFFECTS OF COVID ON THOROUGHBRED BREEDING: WHY KEEP GOING? Covid almost had a drastic effect on the 2020 covering season falls was not hard to see… when the veterinary authorities initially decreed that vets could pay only emergency visits to studs; and routine scanning of From 2007 to 2009 the aggregate at Tattersalls November Foal mares for covering, post-cover washouts and pregnancy scans Sale fell by 64%, meaning a reduction of almost 10 million did not constitute emergencies. -

Soldiers at Sea: the Legal and Policy Implications of Using Military Security Teams to Combat Piracy
SOLDIERS AT SEA: THE LEGAL AND POLICY IMPLICATIONS OF USING MILITARY SECURITY TEAMS TO COMBAT PIRACY JAMES W. HARLOW ABSTRACT Maritime piracy is a critical challenge to global security. Piracy threatens billions of dollars worth of commerce every year, puts the lives and livelihoods of thousands of mariners at risk, and causes untold harm to pirate-controlled communities. To combat this threat, the international community has deployed military and law enforcement resources. But the present strategy is suboptimal. Some experts have argued that the private sector should lead antipiracy efforts by providing armed security contractors or fleets of armed protection vessels. Such a drastic expansion of the role of private actors, however, is inconsistent with the governmental obligation to ensure freedom of the seas. Consistent with the obligation for a public solution, this Article recommends that short-term antipiracy strategies be refocused toward the widespread deployment of military security teams (“MSTs”) onboard merchant vessels. The use of MSTs is well-grounded in historical practice and law. In addition to building the basic legal foundation for the deployment of MSTs, this Article provides a specific implementation of this strategy from both legal and policy perspectives. I. And a Letter to My Customers ===
--- == ROOTS & RHYTHM - SALE 01/12/2014 - AND A LETTER TO MY CUSTOMERS === --- Dear Friends Happy New Year! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. NOTE: Regrettably our holiday season was the slowest we've ever seen and it may mean that we will not be able to continue operating our business for very much longer. I am no longer a young man (not by a long shot!) and don't have the energy to pursue ways in which we may be able to promote the business. I would love to be able to settle down and listen to all the music I have gathered over the years in a relaxed setting and with critical reviewing faculties turned off. I would love to see Roots & Rhythm continue and thrive and even if we make it through the current crisis I would still like to get away from the stress of running a business so I am open to having someone else take over and move the company forward. If you are such a person or know such a person please contact me and we can discuss it. This list consists of a sale which we hope will raise enough money to help us get caught up with our suppliers and our taxes as well as some other pressing expenses. This list features 600 titles in all covering all the genres of music we specialize in and featuring books, DVDs and compact discs. This list includes manufacturer?s overstocks and deletions, our own excess inventory and a lot of titles that have been sitting on our shelves that have never been listed before. -

Video, sponsored by Taylor Made. Three days ago at Del Mar, the GIII Sorrento S. maintained the unbeaten record of Untouched Talent, a filly by Storm Cat out of a daughter of A.P. Indy. A day later, over at Saratoga, the Haskell Invitational S. provided a well-deserved GI success for Bluegrass Cat, a colt by Storm Cat out of a daughter of A.P. Indy. These impressive winners come from a sample of only eight foals of racing age bred to this pattern, which produces 3x4 inbreeding to the legendary Secretariat. No doubt people will be quick to give the credit to the Secretariat inbreeding for the effectiveness of this pairing. After all, Bluegrass Cat Equi-Photo Secretariat was a phenomenal racehorse with a powerful pedigree and he also had a physique which had admirers of the thoroughbred drooling. So inbreeding to him makes excellent sense, or does it? Tony Morris, in his book Thoroughbred Stallions, comprehensively demolished the 1973 Triple Crown winner=s reputation as a stallion: AHe did not supply champions on a regular basis, and he was not even able to provide a reasonable quota of above-average performers; his ratio of 8 per cent stakes winners to foals does not qualify him for even the modest description of >a good sire.= There is no getting away from the fact that he has proved extremely disappointing in his second career.@ It is often difficult to determine to what extent inbreeding has influenced a particular horse=s talents. -
