Th e conference was organised by the Association for Canadian Studies in Ireland to promote the development of high-calibre graduate research 9 relating to Canada among European post-graduate students. In doing so, it aimed to further the knowledge and understanding of Canada and initiate an international network of new Canadianist researchers in Europe. Th e conference brought together graduate researchers from over ten countries in Western and Central Europe to present and discuss their innovative fi ndings on a wide range of issues relating to Canadian Studies. Th is volume presents the outcomes of this seminar. Th e scope of the papers closely refl ects Canada’s foreign policy priorities including managing diversity, economics and democracy* and includes research on literature, the arts, and linguistic and social portraits of immigrant communities in Canada. Il s‘est tenu du 23 au 25 octobre 2008. Le séminaire était organisé par l’Association Irlandaise d’Études Canadiennes volume et avait pour but de promouvoir le développement des recherches de pointe sur le Canada par les étudiants du troisième cycle en Europe. Il visait ainsi à avancer 9 la compréhension et les connaissances au sujet du Canada et ainsi faciliter le développement d’un réseau international de nouveaux Canadianistes en Europe. Ceci fut l’occasion de réunir de jeunes chercheurs venant de nombreux pays de l’Europe centrale et occidentale afi n de présenter et débattre les résultats de leur recherches sur une panoplie de thèmes portant sur les Études Canadiennes. Ces actes sont le témoignage du dynamisme des Études Canadiennes en Europe. L’étendue de ces communications refl ète les priorités de politique étrangère du Canada, y compris la gestion de la diversité, le développement économique, la démocratie* et viennent s’y ajouter les communications sur l’art, la littérature ainsi que les portraits linguistiques et sociaux des communautés immigrées au Canada. Clarke’s transgression of genre boundaries and his use of intertextuality are examined as strategies to establish African-Canadian culture as a signifi cant component of any notion of Canadianness. Finally, it is demonstrated that by embracing a regional Nova Scotian perspective and by taking recourse to neglected histories of oppression, Clarke constructs patterns that allow African-Canadians to identify as both black and Canadian. Résumé Cet article voit dans le roman en vers de George Elliott Clarke Whylah Falls (1990) une tentative d’élargir un concept de «Canadianness» dans lequel les Afro-Canadiens ne seront plus construits comme les marginaux d’une société majoritairement blanche. Clarke dépasse les frontières du genre, il utilise des références intertextuelles comme stratégies pour faire de la culture afro-ca- nadienne un élément signifi catif de la notion de « Canadianness ». En virologie clinique, la métagénomique virale qui repose sur le séquençage aléatoire de type shotgun de l’ensemble des génomes viraux d’un échantillon (le virome), est une approche prometteuse pour la détection et l’identification sans a priori de potentiels nouveaux pathogènes. Cependant, son utilisation reste encore marginale en raison de l’importante contamination des viromes par les séquences nucléiques de l’hôte qui masque le signal viral, limite la reconstruction de génomes viraux et requiert une profondeur importante de séquençage, générant ainsi un cout élevé. Ces dernières années, de nombreux protocoles reposant principalement sur des étapes de filtration/centrifugation et digestions enzymatiques, ont été développés pour diminuer cette contamination humaine avec un succès limité notamment dans le cas de biopsies cliniques. Dans ce contexte, ce travail de thèse avait pour objectif d’améliorer l’approche de métagénomique pour le diagnostic clinique de maladies infectieuses virales en augmentant le ratio de séquences pathogène/hôte par déplétion des acides nucléiques humains.

Here he studied and discussed similar recent projects with fellow artists, and brought reports back to Berlin on the equestrian statues by Pierre Hubert L'Archevêque and Johan Tobias Sergel (Gustavus Adolphus in Stockholm), by Étienne Maurice Falconet (Peter the Great in St. Petersburg) and by Jacques François Joseph Saly (Frederick V in Copenhagen). Documents not previously published throw new light on the contacts Schadow during these travels established with the Danish painter Nicolai Abildgaard, a contact, it is here argued, that strengthened Schadow's commitment to use a historically accurate, more realistic and less idealised stylistic idiom when depicting great figures from the national past. BRUSSELS.—After the striking victories gained at Turin in 1902, and at Milan in 1906, by the representatives of modern art in Belgium, one had hoped for similar triumphs at the Brussels Exhibition of 1910, and it is as incomprehensible as it is deplorable that this modern school of Belgian art, whose influence has been felt in all the countries of Europe, should have been unrepresented there. As M. Robe has written in “L'Art Moderne,” “Now or never was the moment to appeal to the public for a verdict upon our work. I grant that the authorities have rather looked askance at the products of our brains, and so far have not entrusted to us the elaboration of plans for public works and buildings which are destined to form permanent records of their day. But here we had a unique occasion to make a display of our talent, and even had the result been disastrous, if it is indeed true that our work is destined to have but an ephemeral existence, the evil could not have been permanent or lasting, as is the case with so many of the monuments and buildings which deface our public squares.” On the other hand, the preface to the catalogue of the German section begins as follows:— “At the moment when our Art Industry is about to give an account of itself . of its aims and capabilities, it is only seemly that, before going on to speak of the work of our own country, we should remind ourselves of what our German artists and craftsmen owe to their Belgian confreres.” The writer of the preface then proceeds to mention the names of Lemmen, Finch, Serrurier-Bovy, Horta, and goes on to explain the influence of and the exact position occupied by Henri Van de Velde, “whose name stands as a monument, so to speak, of the sympathy existing between German and Belgian genius.” Furnished Cottage Exhibited at the recent International Exhibition, Brussels, by M.

By some quirk, a string of recitals at the Wigmore Hall all had Franz Schubert’s music at their core. They were all wonderful, but Emanuel Ax’s was the most revealing, as much for its sudden moments of impetuousness as its seasoned wisdom.” Ivan Hewett, December 20, 2011 The Telegraph “Ax displayed a creamy technique, played with a breathtaking case, yet one where each note had meaning and purpose. The cadenza in the first movement was a whole musical story in itself, phrases dissipating slowly into the air, fingers like butterflies kissing the keys and power available when needed. In the world of 18th-century opera, such practices ensured that operas could become a commercial success because the substitution or compilation of arias fitting the singer’s abilities proved the best recipe for fulfilling the expectations of audiences. Known as »pasticcios« since the 18th-century, these operas have long been considered inferior patchwork. The volume collects essays that reconsider the pasticcio, contextualize it, define its precon- ditions, look at its material aspects and uncover its aesthetical principles. Berthold Over (PhD), born in 1964, is a researcher in the project PASTICCIO. Ways of Arranging Attractive Operas at Greifswald University. He previously worked and taught at Mainz University where he was member of projects on musical mobility and migration as well as on Roman cantatas in Handel’s times. His research focuses mainly on 17th- and 18th-century music as evident from numerous publications. Gesa zur Nieden (Prof. Dr.), born in 1978, teaches musicology at the University of Greifswald and at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media. Her research and publications focus on the early modern musicians mobility, on spaces and build- ings for music, on intermedial dimensions of music and on the reception of Wagner after 1945.
