The 850th Space Communications Squadron inactivated Tuesday in a ceremony at the Building 300 Auditorium here. Lt. Col. Danny Cecil, former 850th SCS commander, cited the non-standard organizational structure of the 850th SCS as a major reason why the 850th SCS was inactivated. The 50th Network Operations Group’s new organization- al structure will foster an environment in which roles and responsibilities are more clearly defined, resulting in a bet- ter, more productive, work environment for everyone involved. “It was a hard decision to make initially,” Colonel Cecil said. “The last thing a commander wants to do is shut down his squadron, but after about three months, I realized it was the right thing to do.” Colonel Cecil’s recommendation shortly after taking command of the 850th SCS in 2004 surprised 50th NOG commander Col. David Uhrich. Many commanders would be reluctant to give up their commands, but Colonel Cecil offered the idea freely. “One of our core values is service before self; Colonel Cecil made a selfless and courageous decision,” Colonel Uhrich said. Colonel Cecil said he felt privileged to be 850th SCS commander. “Before the change of command ceremony (in July 2004), I spent a few days getting to know people around the photo by Alex Groves squadron. By popular demand, the fifth chief master sergeant of the Air Force returned to Schriever Jan. 25 to speak and share lunch with some of Schriever’s enlisted Airmen. Chief Master Sgt. Bob Gaylor (ret.) spent an hour and a half in the Building 300 Auditorium here, talking to nearly 100 Airmen about dedicating oneself to the needs of the Air Force and knowing what talents one brings to the Air Force mission. “Some people get selfish—‘I don’t want to (move) there, no one can make me go there,’” the chief said. “I wonder if they’re serving for the right reasons or if they serve the Air Force at their convenience. I feel we should be prepared to serve where the Air Force feels we can best serve.” As an example, Chief Gaylor shared a story of how he moved to Lackland Air Force Base, —the first choice on his assignment “dream sheet.” The personnelist, upon seeing Lackland at the top of the chief’s list, smiled and said he’d take care of it. “I got to Lackland and went to the security police

One thousand twenty. That is the number of minutes, in soccer game time, it had been since the Schriever Varsity Soccer team last lost a game. That streak finally ended in San Antonio, where the Schriever soccer team lost in the second playoff round of the Defender’s Cup at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Beginning with a tie last summer to area powerhouse Red Lions, Schriever dominated their Colorado Springs Soccer League division with a 7-0-1 record. With 37 goals, they scored more than any other team in the divi- sion. Their defense posted five shutouts and allowed only three goals during the entire season. Following the end of the CSSL’s fall season, the team prepared to attend their first tournament since forming in May. The 16 players enjoyed a competitive advantage over their opponents due to their acclimation to high-alti- tude fitness. Fourteen Armed Forces teams from around the nation competed for the fifth-annual Defender’s Cup Jan. 13 to 15. To win the Defender’s Cup, the teams were required to play as many as 10 games in a three-day span. Schriever won all three games of the group round. Against Moody AFB, Ga., forwards David Bills and Christopher Johnson each scored goals while goalie Jeremy Edwards shut down the Moody offense. Against the Army Special Operations Command (SOC) team at Lackland AFB’s Medina Annex, Schriever overcame a vocal home crowd to win 3-2 on two goals from Bills and one goal from midfielder Luke Barker. Midfielder Reyes Soltero had assists on both of Bills’ goals. Within minutes of their second victory, Schriever took the field again, this time against the Randolph AFB, Texas, team. Schriever eked a victory over the short- manned Randolph team with forward Fred Katarega’s go- ahead goal on an empty net. After these three games Jan. 13 and 14, Schriever was the second seed and had a goal differential of plus-four. Only Seymour Johnson AFB, N.C., finished with a larger goal differential of plus-seven. As Schriever began play Jan. 15 began with the second playoff round, fatigue took its toll on the team. Starting defenders Josh Pearsall and Scott Silver could only play limited amounts of time, while Soltero missed most of the playoff games due to foot injury. Through all this, Edwards continued his dominating defensive performance despite mounting pain with pulled muscles. After a first-round bye, the team began a rematch against the Army team. Army SOC scored a surprise goal in the first half to place Team Schriever in a deficit for the first time in the entire tournament. Team Schriever quickly responded with goals from Barker and forward Christopher Johnson to regain the lead. Army SOC then delivered the finishing blow to Schriever’s hopes of winning their first tournament play- off game. Jeremy Edwards could not stop a controversial Army penalty kick, and Army SOC tied the game at 2-2. Midfielder Josh Meador scored another goal for Schriever only minutes later, but Army answered with the tying goal shortly before regulation time ended. After a scoreless overtime, Army SOC eliminated Schriever 6-5 on a penalty kick shootout with Edward’s numerous injuries preventing him from diving for penalty shots.

Help Us Welcome Our Troops Back Home Welcome Home Global War on Terrorism Heroes Non-Profit Fund

The Welcome Home Global War On Terrorism Heroes Fund directly supports activities involved with the return of locally based troops from an active theatre of operations. Donated funds are used to support welcoming ceremonies for soldiers and families, unit activities, and other functions which are not readily covered by existing infrastructure. Efforts are coordinated closely with local command structures to meet needs that otherwise would go unfilled due to the restrictions and lengthy approval cycle attached to the use of DOD funds. A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE PATRIOTIC BUSINESSES AND CITIZENS OF COLORADO SPRINGS TO SAY THANKS FOR PROTECTING OUR FREEDOMS AND WELCOME HOME THE TROOPS. A fund of the Pikes Peak Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) agency.
