LUTHERAN CHURCH TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN November 3, 2013 8:30AM/11:00AM WELCOME Thank you for joining us at God’s house this morning. Everyone, please sign the friendship book located in each pew. Restrooms are located in the fellowship hall which is located through the door on the right side of the sanctuary. Parent's Room is located at the far end of the fellowship hall. There is a TV in that room with which you can still follow along with today's service. A changing table is in the women’s restroom. Holy Communion: Each service includes the celebration of the Lord’s Supper. The Bible clearly teaches that the Lord’s Supper is not intended for everyone. Therefore, our church honors the Bible’s teaching of close communion. (1 Co. 11:28-29, 1 Co. 10:16-17, Romans 16:17, 2 Co. 6:14). Only members of this church and our church body are to cele- brate the Lord’s Supper. Visitors are encouraged to speak to the pastor if they have any questions. About Today’s Service: One of the most important “reforms” that Martin Luther made in the life of the Christian church was to clean up the Mass, or the public service of Holy Communion. Today, we follow the general outline of Lu- ther’s Deutsche Messe (the German Mass), including some of the liturgical songs that Luther wrote for the service. As in the medieval Latin mass, Luther began his service with an Entrance Psalm. This was a psalm that was chanted as the clergy entered. Luther opened up the mass greatly to congregational participation by providing hymns based on the psalms, replacing the one chanted only by the choir. “A Mighty For- tress,” a metrical version of Psalm 46, is the most beloved of these metrical psalms. Lutherans today will immediately notice the absence of the Confession of Sins at the start of the service. The early Lutheran Church continued to use private confession and absolution – not the Roman Catho- lic sacrament of Penance (“going to Confession”). The addition of confession and absolution for all at the beginning of worship became part of the Lutheran liturgy in America with the introduction of the “Common Service” of 1888. This hymn, written by Martin Luther, became a standard part of Lutheran worship in Germany into the twentieth century. The Kyrie is a cry for God’s mercy and help and expresses the confidence that God will answer our prayer. The phrase Kyrie eleison is Greek for “Lord, have mercy.” Kyrie, God Father in heav’n above, Kyrie, O Christ our King, You abound in gracious love, Salvation for all you came to bring. Of all things the maker and preserver. O Lord Jesus, God’s own Son, Eleison, eleison! Our Mediator at the heav’nly throne, Hear our cry and grant our supplication. Eleison, eleison! Kyrie, O God the Holy Ghost, Guard our faith, the gift we need the most, And bless our life’s last hour That we leave this sinful world with gladness. Eleison, eleison! Please observe a moment of brief silence. SONG OF PRAISE LOBGESANG— GLORIA Luther introduced congregational participation as he and his coworkers wrote many hymns for the church. Historians have noted that Luther “sang the Reformation into the hearts of the people.” The ministers announces: M: Glory be to God on high! To this we hold forever. 3 THE SALUTATION SALUTATION This solemn yet intimate greeting between the pastor and congregation occurs just before the two major divi- sions of the service (Scripture and Holy Communion). Pastor Wilhelm Loehe said of this greeting, "The bonds of love and unity between pastor and people are tied anew." M: The Lord be with you! C: And also with you! THE COLLECT KOLLEKTE — PRAYER OF THE DAY The Prayers of the Day are an ancient set of prayers that sum up the petitions of the congregation using a pat- tern noted for its brevity and beauty. Each Sunday has its unique Prayer of the Day, reflecting the theme of the Gospel of the Day. M: Almighty God, through the preaching of your servants, the blessed Reformers, you caused the light of the Gospel to shine forth. Grant that we may faithfully defend it against all enemies and joyfully proclaim it to the salvation of people everywhere to the glory of your holy name; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. BE SEATED THE EPISTLE EPISTEL— Romans 3:19-28 Luther retained the centuries-old list of Scripture Lessons appointed for specific Sundays and festivals. He also retained the practice of singing (chanting) the readings although he modified the chant melodies to fit the Ger- man language. Each person speaking in the readings (for example, Jesus, the Pharisees, the apostles) had their own melody that identified to the listeners who was speaking. Luther saw chant as a means of minimizing the personality of the reader and of adorning and focusing attention on the words of the Lesson. Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. 21 But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God pre- sented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished-- 26 he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. 27 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of observing the law? No, but on that of faith. 28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law. 4 GRADUAL HYMN GRADUALLEID — CW#390 Salvation Unto Us Has Come (8:30a only) Only By Faith (11:00a only; printed on back page of folder) This hymn forms a bridge or step between the Epistle Lesson and the Gospel as the presiding minis- ter traditionally stepped either from one side of the altar to the other or out into the congregation to read the Gospel. STAND THE HOLY GOSPEL DAS EVANGELIUM— John 8:31-36 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disci- ples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." 33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" 34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. BE SEATED CREDAL HYMN CREDO— CW#270 We All Believe in One True God SERMON PREDIGT Luther elevated the place and prominence of preaching in the service. The Gospel-based sermon was one of Luther’s most important reformations. His preaching was direct and lively, although many of his sermons would appear long by modern standards.

Luther sent Hausmann a copy of a pamphlet 011 another subject on November 13. 1523, and in the accompanying letter told him that he would send to him a copy of the form of mass which he proposed for the ttse of the Wittenberg church. This may have been ready for printing at the time of writing this letter, for a few weeks later, on December 4, Luther sent Hausmann a printed copy of the Formula mis­ sae et communionis pro ecclesia Wittembergensi. It reached him 011 December 11, and its arrival moved Hausmann to expressions of gratitude, joy, and satisfaction.

    Anniversary Readings from the Lutheran Confessions Worship Resources Responsive Preface Prior to the Lutheran Confessions anniversary reading, you may wish to use these simple responsive verses to prepare your people. Jesus says, “Whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 10:32) Therefore, “I will speak of Your testimonies before kings and shall not be put to shame.” (Psalm 119:46) Confession and Absolution for the Chorale Service ELH p. 107 outlines “Rite Four, the Lutheran ‘Chorale’ Service.” This outline, adapted from Luther’s Deutsche Messe (1526), suggests using hymn paraphrases and liturgical wording from elsewhere in ELH for the liturgical ordinary. In the interest of integrating Luther’s Small Catechism into the worship service, we have adapted the following form for Confession and Absolution from the Catechism especially for use with this service immediately after the Invocation. This wording is based on An Explanation of Dr. Martin Luther’s Small Catechism (ELS, 2001) p. 23. Confession consists of two parts: one, that we confess our sins; the other, that we receive absolution, or forgiveness, from the pastor or confessor as from God himself, and in no way doubt, but firmly believe that our sins are thereby forgiven before God in heaven. In 2013, a small group of German green and left- wing activists, professional campaign NGOs and well-established protectionist organisations set up deceptive communication campaigns against TTIP, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership between the European Union and the United States. Germany’s anti-TTIP NGOs explicitly aimed to take German-centred protests to other European countries. Their reasoning is contradictory and logically inconsistent. Their messages are targeted to serve common sense protectionist demands of generally ill-informed citizens and politicians. Thereby, anti-TTIP communication is based on metaphoric messages and far-fetched myths to effectively evoke citizens’ emotions. Together, these groups dominated over 90 percent of online media reporting on TTIP in Germany. Anti-TTIP protest groups in Germany are not only inventive; they are also resourceful. Based on generous public funding and opaque private donations, green and left-wing political parties, political foundations, clerical and environmental groups, and well-established anti-globalisation organisations maintain influential campaign networks. Protest groups’ activities are coordinated by a number of former and current green and left-wing politicians and political parties that search for anti-establishment political profiles. As Wallon blockage mentality regarding CETA, the trade and investment agreement between the European Union and Canada, demonstrates, Germany’s anti-TTIP groups’ attempts to undermine EU trade policy bear the risk of coming to fruition in other Eurpean countries.

In1987 further research was done on the question of tune authorship and musical style; the material was revised several times in the years that followed. As the 500th anniversary of the Reformation approached, it was brought into its present form. An unexpected insight came from examining the tunes associated with the Luther’s hymn texts: Luther employed several types (styles) of melody. Viewed from later centuries it is easy to lump all his hymn tunes in one category and label them “medieval” hymns. Over the centuries scholars have studied many questions about each melody, especially its origin: did it derive from an existing Gregorian melody or from a preexisting hymn tune or folk song? In studying Luther’s tunes it became clear that he chose melody structures and styles associated with different music-making occasions and groups in society.

    Festival Divine Service for Reformation Day Sunday, October 25, 2020 Wheat Ridge Evangelical Lutheran Church, Wheat Ridge, Colorado will for Germany (and the Church now being reformed with the Gospel) to be overtaken. Reformation Day is set apart for us to thank God for raising up those who faithfully proclaim God’s Word in the face of adversity to protect the Church from threats of all kinds—political or doctrinal, external or internal. Today we especially give thanks for Dr. Martin Luther and the Confessors of the evangelical church who sought to restore the clarity of the Gospel to Christian worship and witness.
