CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU, RECENTLY RETIRED TEACHERS We would like to Congratulate Judy Barcelon, Patty Michiels, and Sharon Stevens who retired last school year. All three teachers were well loved and renowned for their hard work and dedication to help students become more knowledgeable and successful in life. All three teachers have won various awards for their teaching skills, as well as programs they initiated while at Piner High.

Ms. Michiels taught for 40 years, 34 of those years at Piner High. Her first teaching job was at Granada Hills High School, in Southern where she remembers hearing the quarterbacks name mentioned quite often and thought to herself “he must be pretty good”. That person was John Elway, who played 16 years in the NFL and won two Super Bowls.

At Piner Ms. Michiels taught Spanish and was known for her use of song and music as a mnemonic device, where students learned in both a rigorous and fun environment. She also started a program where high school students visited elementary schools to teach the younger students Spanish. It is said that there is no better way to learn something, than teaching it yourself. This program challenged many high school students to be the experts in the classroom.

Ms. Judy Barcelon taught at Piner for 33 years. She taught a variety of different science classes and was the driv- ing force for Piner’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program, as well as Piner’s Heath Sci- ence and Biotech pathway, which provides course work for students to gain knowledge and specialized training in today’s scientific and technology-based fields. The students gain a rigorous academic course of study coupled with highly relevant, “hands-on” training and experience, via observation in community-based laboratories and hospitals, guest lectures from professionals and through engaging, contextual learning in the class room.

Ms. Sharon Stevens taught at PIner for more than 20 years. She taught Social Studies, but also supervised the ASB (Associated Study Body). Ms. Stevens taught a majority of senior classes during her last years at Piner and was an avid supporter of Piner athletics particularly .

9 14TH ANNUAL HALL OF FAME DINNER -APRIL 6, 2019- Our next Piner High Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner is on April 6, 2019. Those being inducted will be announce in December. Continue to look for them on our website at www.pinerhallof- fame.org. Paul Sanchietti (class of ’78) has devoted much time to running that website, as well as the “Piner Graduates” Facebook page. Thank you Paul!!! The dinner will be held at the beautiful Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club, with tickets at $60 for adults and $20 for children. Come honor these past student athletes, classmates and coaches, and join in the reunion like at- mosphere, while enjoying a deli- cious dinner and dessert. 2018 inductees to Piner’s Athletic Hall of Fame at the Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club. Thank you, DOROTHY GONG. Dorothy, family member of the G&G Supermarkets Family and the Class of ‘71, made a large donation of col- lectable Beanie Babies to the Piner High Foundation. Dorothy’s family members included her brother’s Lee (class of ’68), Don (class of ’70) and older siblings Dick and Betty Gong who graduated from Santa Rosa High School. Betty passed away in 2011 and left some things to Dorothy, which included 9 storage containers of beanie babies and some Disney items. Dorothy generously decided to donate these items with half going to the PHS Foundation and the other half to the SRHS Foundation for fundraisers, etc. The hard part was trying to get an estimate as to the value of each item. Our PHS classmate of 1971 Betty (Furia) White stepped up, agreeing to store the items and then took on the tedious and time-consuming task of finding the value of each item. Thank you Betty!! Neither organizations are sure how they will use these gifts, but SRHS is con- sidering giving their half of the items as rewards towards students, while the PHS Foundation is considering to sell them at their Crab Feed auctions or on E-bay. All funds or items will serve the students at both schools. Thank you, Dorothy! Kasey Olenberger (class of ’96), owner of FBK1 and former professional minor league baseball player for the California Angels (now the Los Angeles Angels), in January organized an event for over 100 kids that suffered the loss of their home and personal items from the 2017 fires. Kasey had Professional Baseball players come to SR to teach kids the finer points of baseball fielding and hitting. The kids also received free gifts. One of those volunteers to help Kasey’s instructors was Andrew Vaughn, a 2016 Maria Carrillo graduate. This year Andrew while playing his 2nd year at UC Berkeley, received the coveted Golden Spikes Award. An award given to the nation’s top amateur baseball player. Andrews father, Toby Vaughn, was the batting champion for the SCL and NBL his senior year at Piner in 1985. Andrew agreed to help out because he felt a strong commitment for any way to the fire survivors.
