Principal’s Update continued. interested in attending or want more information, please call the Main Office at 528-5292.

Parents can take an active role in Santa Rosa High School by coming to our School Site Council meetings, Student-Teacher-Parent (STP) meetings, English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) meetings, or through various other department and program parent groups. I realize getting involved at school isn’t easy for hard-working, busy parents, but try to volunteer in the classroom, at events, or at various meetings whenever you can to stay connected to the school. Our Project Graduation 2014 program needs your help! They are looking for volunteers, gifts and donations. This is an incredible group of people who put on the best party in the county to keep our students safe! Please contact them at www.SRHSprojectgrad.com to volunteer or for more information. Speak to your child nightly about school. Check their homework. Keep them organized with the use of their planner. Get them to school on time, having had a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast. Have them get involved in different school activities. Have them come to our free tutoring, open to all students every Tuesday and Thursday in room 143, staffed by SRHS teachers and volunteers. If you have concerns or questions, contact your child’s teacher through email, voicemail, or a note in their mailbox in the Main Office. Parental involvement throughout high school is the key to student success!

A CALIFORNIA GOLD RIBBON SCHOOL 29 SANTA ROSA HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER MARCH 2017 Ag Boosters

We held another successful Harvest Moon Auction. Funds earned will be used to support the FFA program and will provide scholarships. The event has allowed us to contribute in the following ways: • The Ag Boosters were able to contribute to the cost of hotel rooms for the state FFA convention coming in April. • The Ag Boosters provided monetary support to help offset the cost of supplies for students in the floral classes. The Viticulture class harvested the 2016 Chardonnay this last fall. The SRHS Ag Boosters purchased the grapes, and it is currently fermenting at SRJC’s Shone Farm under the careful watch of Chris Wills. We will release the 2016 Panther Chardonnay at our 5 th Annual Harvest Moon Auction and Dinner coming in the fall.

Spring is in the air. Time to enjoy the sunshine with a glass of Panther Chardonnay. The grapes were student grown and harvested at Santa Rosa High School's six-acre Chardonnay vineyard made possible by the educational partnerships with Kendall Jackson as our vineyard manager, winemaker Chris Wills of Shone Farm , and label created by SRHS ArtQuest students. We have a few cases left of our limited production 2013 and 2014 Vintage Panther Chardonnay. The 2013 Vintage Panther Chardonnay is $5 per bottle, and the 2014 Vintage Panther Chardonnay is $7 per bottle. To purchase contact Don Mills at [email protected] or 707.321.6803

It’s Scholarship time. Any active member of the SRHS FFA program that has been active for at least three years, seeking advanced education may apply. See your Ag teacher for an application. Completed applications are due April 14, 2017. The Ag Boosters will be awarding scholarships at the Spring Banquet in May.

We are planning to participate in the upcoming SRHS Foundation Polenta Feed. We will have more information about our organization as well as information about our Panther Chardonnay. Meetings

You are invited to join the SRHS Ag Boosters for their general meetings, held every second Tuesday of each month, at 6:30 pm in the Ag Building. Our next meeting is March 14th, 6:30pm The general meetings are important for planning the various events and activities that are key to supporting the SRHS Agriculture Program. The Ag Boosters are always looking for new members. We invite parents, alumni and community members to attend. Officer elections will be in May and we will have several vacant positions to fill in the next fiscal year that runs from July-June. We are also looking for a website host to manage our site and keep it current. Please contact Fred for more information.

The viability of the Ag Boosters is critical to the SRHS Agriculture program and more importantly the opportunities and experiences of our children. Please consider joining the Ag Boosters to ensure that the program remains strong and enables the students to learn and grow.

ArtQuest continued philosophy, yet shares several common themes and intents, including the exploration of a culture that has less to do with the intrinsic value of things, and more to do with providing a felt experience. Ms. Sieck’s art practice is in conversation with her work on the land, currently at the Occidental Arts and Ecology Center. The lush, narrative paper-cuts she is currently producing, chronicle the cycles of growth and change that happen both in the landscape and within the body, finding hope and meaning in the synchronicity that emerges. She has recently been marking each month by the making of a new paper-cut—each piece becomes a densely woven portrait of the symbols of a particular time. By tracking both the internal and external landscapes, and honoring what is emerging in each, she hopes to evoke a feeling of reverence, rather than fear, about the wild beauty of their constant changing and regenerating. Sieck not only produces intricate paper cuts, but also creates large-scale murals, shadow puppets and puppet perfromances. “The Discovered program is a great vehicle to shine a spotlight on some of the individual artists in our county whose work hasn’t yet received well deserved recognition,” said Supervisor Efren Carrillo, Chair of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors. “Receiving this award will be an important credential for all of these artists as they move their career forward in Sonoma County or beyond.”

Winners were selected through a highly competitive process, whittling the initial recommendations down to 12 finalists, with jurors then making studio visits to select the final five winners. This program is made possible by The Artist Awards Endowment Fund of the Community Foundation of Sonoma County, which was created by over 50 donors from 2007-2011 with additional support from the James Irvine Foundation.

SF National Portfolio Day Exciting Destination for SRHS Arts Students Ms. Jerilea Jones, head of the SRHS College and Career Center (CCC), coordinated efforts to take several SRHS visual arts students to the National Portfolio Day hosted by the San Francisco Art Institute in San Francisco on January 14 th . More than 40 arts-specific colleges accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design were present. This annual event is an exciting and fast-paced opportunity for students to receive portfolio reviews from admissions counselors and faculty of the colleges. On-the-spot admissions decisions, as well as referrals for merit-based scholarships, are often received by students during this day. The SRHS student group that attended this year shared very positive feedback of the day and say they would recommend it to their friends and classmates in the future. Although arts students have individually attended this event from AQ and SRHS for years, this is the first time that they attended together as a group and that the trip was facilitated by the district

Just a Few Snippets About What’s Up With Digital Arts! Digital Arts is busy as usual and here are a few recent highlights: Teacher John Sappington was one of two jurors, along with artist Lisa Puentes, for the National Arts Program, sponsored locally by the City of Santa Rosa. The exhibition of the work will continue through March 31, with the Awards Reception on Sunday, March 5 th , from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at the Steele Lane Recreation Center. Santa Rosa is one of over 80 cities across the US that participate in The National Arts Program. The program’s purpose is to foster local artistic talent, reward creative accomplishments and encourage a greater appreciation of art. Two hundred local artists of all ages, amateur and professional, showcase their art in this exhibition annually. Artist Marc Katano’s exhibition, " Outside Voices, Tarp Paintings" opens Feb. 11 at the Art Museum of Sonoma County. AQ students from Photography, Visual Fine Arts and Digital Arts have been especially invited by the museum for an artist tour and lecture this Spring. Digital Arts students James Mills and Sean Gustafson are working with a professional graphic designer on a project visually presenting census data regarding homeless youth. The project was brought to the class by Santa Rosa City Schools District personnel. More details later on this exciting and important project. Advanced Digital Arts students are working with Ridgeway Childcare Center to create toys for their Little Tikes kitchen set and another play set ... with the Digital Arts 3-D printer. Multiple Scholastic Arts Awards To AQ Students The 2017 Scholastic Art & Writing Regional Award Winners were announced in February and we are proud to announce the following ArtQuest students as recipients of the prestigious recognitions. The results from the National Judging will be announced in Mid-March and these winners will be invited to NYC and Carnegie Hall for the celebratory weekend in early summer. National Scholastic’s “Alliance for Young Artists & Writers” identifies teenagers with exceptional artistic and literary talent and skill and brings their remarkable work to a national audience through this program. Begun in1923, it is the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S. Noteworthy past winners include Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, John Updike and others. And the AQ Winners for 2017 are…

A CALIFORNIA GOLD RIBBON SCHOOL 36 SANTA ROSA HIGH SCHOOL PARENT NEWSLETTER MARCH 2017 Choir Boosters

In March, Spring is in the air and the choir is taking it to the streets. Well, not exactly the streets, but the concert choir will be participating along with the four other high schools of the Santa Rosa City School District, in the annual Barclay Concert, which is held each year at Sonoma State University's Green Music Center. This is a unique opportunity for the SRCSD high school choirs to work with a highly regarded choral conductor. This year's conductor is Daniel Hughes. Mr. Hughes is a conductor, accompanist, coach and choral clinician, who serves as the Artistic Director & Conductor of San José Choral Productions (an organization whose vision is “to heal our world through music and words”). He directs the internationally award-winning ensemble The Choral Project — a mixed-voice vocal ensemble specializing in dramatic, conceptual performance of high-level choral music from the medieval period to the contemporary — whose mission is “to connect to one another through choral theater, education and musical excellence.” Under his direction The Choral Project has received worldwide recognition, performing to standing ovation crowds in the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, England, Scotland, Wales, and Spain. (For more information about Daniel Hughes and the Choral Project, see www.choralproject.org.)

At the Barclay each year, the students spend the evening before and all day prior to the concert in rehearsal with all five choirs and the chosen conductor. Then at 7:00 p.m., they will don their formal choir attire and take to the stage of Weill Hall. Join us for truly special Barclay Concert at 7:00 p.m. on March 16, 2017. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased online at www.srhschoral.org. The Barclay tickets are your best value for getting to appreciate the wonderful acoustics of Weill Hall. The funds from the concert go directly to fund our Barclay Scholarship, which is given to a graduating senior who plans to continue studying music in college.

Following the Barclay concert, we will all be on Spring Break from March 17-26. But on March 27, 2017, at 7:00 p.m., please plan to join us in the choir room for our monthly Choir Booster Board meeting. We will be discussing the upcoming Duke's Place (April 7 & 8), Music in the Park Festival, held at Six Flags in Vallejo (April 22 -- we will be taking all the choirs in two busses and we will need chaperones), and our Command Performance Concert (April 28). It takes lots of help to corral these chorale kids and facilitate all of these events. Please join us! Any questions, please contact Michelle Glaubiger, at [email protected]. As always, keep up with our website at srhschoral.org and our Facebook page at SRHS Choirs/ArtQuest Vocal.

In the event of an error in the printing of your ad, whether it grammatical or pictorial in nature, we will gladly refund your money accordingly. We will not, under any circumstances, reprint yearbooks or inserts for the publication as it is too costly and time consuming.
