3 Chico State Soccer 2009 Future is Now for Five Seniors

Kyle Crain

Kyle Crain

Kyle Conrad

Chico State has returned to the upper echelon of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men’s soccer programs ahead of schedule. But the Wildcats are right on time for their fi ve seniors – Evan Armstrong, Adam Raish, Michael Keohane, Kyle Crain, and Kyle Conrad. Less than a year and a half after Felipe Restrepo was hired to turn around a program that had fi nished 8-12-0 the year before, the Wildcats have been named co-favorites, along with nationally top-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills, to win the CCAA Champion- ship Tournament. “A lot of nice things have happened to this program in the last 14 months,” said Restrepo, who was named the CCAA Coach of the Year following last season’s 13-5-1 mark and the program’s fi rst postseason appearance since 2003. “It’s been good to be here. Really good.” The team’s fi ve seniors have played a key role in making things so good. Crain (four goals and seven assists last season) and Armstrong (seven goals and fi ve assists) earned All-CCAA honors last season. Keohane made quite a push for All-CCAA honors as well, notching eight shutouts in 19 starts and a 0.83 goals-against average. Raish helped anchor the defense that allowed only 17 goals in 19 matches. And Conrad was the team’s “jack-of-all trades,” seeing minutes in nearly every position on the fi eld. “Those guys were awesome last season and they’ve been working hard to be even better this year because they know this is their last shot,” said Restrepo. “They’ve really helped set the tone for this program with the attitude and effort they bring every time they step on the pitch, whether it’s practice or a match. We have come a long way in a short time because they have helped to show the way to the younger guys.” As a result, all the players now seem to be willing to learn from one another. That was evident at an inter-squad scrimmage less than a week before the team’s season-opening exhibition match. Players were often heard exhorting their teammates to improve different areas of their play. More often than not, a nod and an inspired effort would result. “I think this team is really talented, but our strength is our chemistry,” said Restrepo. “Everything these guys do they do for each other. This is a very talented group, but its strongest attribute is the bond they have.” Those fi ve players are among 15 on this year’s team that bring another key attribute to the table 4 Good Mix of Veterans, Youth – experience playing in big matches down the stretch and in the postseason – following last year’s surpris- ingly strong campaign. The Wildcats got off to a 7-0 start, and following a rough patch midway through the season, won three of their last four matches to qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament. They were eliminated from the postseason by eventual National Champion Cal State Dominguez Hills on penalty kicks following a 1-1 tie, but that match only helped set the tone for 2009. The Wildcats beat the Toros during the regular season, handing them one of their two losses last year. “I think we have enough talent to compete with anybody,” said Armstrong. “We certainly aren’t afraid of anyone. We play in the toughest conference in the nation, and now we know what it’s like in the postseason, so anything is possible with this team.” Last year’s experience will be a major boon for the Wildcats, whose struggles last year were often attributeable to inexperience, according to Restrepo. “These guys had never been in a position to compete for such high stakes,” he explained. “To play under that pressure at the end of last season, where every match had major repercussions, makes us a much stronger team this year.” So does its talented lineup. Ross Judge, Chris Akwaja, Ryan Struckmeyer, and Jacob Darr join Arm- strong, Crain, Keohane, and Raish to give the Wildcats eight returning starters. Conrad was a part-time starter, along with Zach Bradford, Ryan Nevarez, Aren Dawkins, and Kevin Gibson. Nick Tedrow and Michael Strobel were key reserves. Tyson Crim, Nic Dazzi, Luis Martinez, Mike Janjigian, and Micah Miranda join the team after a year of redshirt seasoning, and will help show the ropes to nine true freshmen new to the program. “I think the program is in a great space in terms of veterans and young talent we can groom over the next couple of years to be the future,” said Restrepo. The future is right now for those veterans. And CCAA coaches aren’t waiting to dub the Wildcats one of the teams to beat. They picked them to fi nish second in the CCAA North Division (more below). "I think we’re heading in a great direction,” said Restrepo. “The alumni support, the facilities, and the overall culture of the program are fantastic. We just need to keep rolling up our sleeves and working toward success.” Wildcats CCAA Tourney co-Favorites Four of 12 CCAA coaches named Chico State the favorite to win the 2009 Conference Champi- onship Tournament in the preseason Coaches' Poll. The Wildcats and Cal State Dominguez Hills, the nation's top-ranked team in the preseason, each received four votes, while nationally-ranked Sonoma State and Cal State L.A. received two apiece. Those teams are also the four favorites to qualify for the championship tournament, the winner of which is crowned the conference champion and earns an automatic berth in the NCAA Championship Tournament. The 'Cats last won the CCAA Championship Tournament in 2003 en route to the National Champi- onship match.

5 Chico State Soccer 2009 Coaching Staff Felipe Restrepo - Head Coach To say second-year Head Coach Felipe Restrepo has breathed new life into the Chico State soccer program is certainly an understatement, as Restrepo guided the Wildcats to seven straight wins to open the 2008 season and an eventual 13-5-1 re- cord, a six game turnaround from the year before and the most wins by a Chico State men’s soccer squad since 2003. The ’Cats fi nished second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s (CCAA) North Division (posting a win and tie in two meetings with eventual NCAA Division II champion Cal State Dominguez Hills) under Restrepo's guidance and ranked fi fth in the perrennially tough NCAA West Region. For his impressive fi rst year efforts, Restrepo was named the CCAA’s 2008 Coach of the Year. Restrepo is the seventh men’s soccer coach in Chico State history and just the third since 1976. Restrepo spent seven seasons as the head assistant coach at UC Davis under Chico State alumnus Dwayne Shaffer prior to taking over the Wildcat program. FELIPE"S Restrepo, whose primary duties at UC Davis included recruiting, helped lead the FILE Aggies to a 70-49-15 record during that time in which the school was making the chal- lenging transition to Division I status. The Aggies went 12-5-3 in 2007 and earned an 2008 CCAA NCAA Championship Tournament berth in their fi rst season as a Division I postseason- Coach of the Year eligible program. In the process, they ranked among the nation’s top 10 in scoring. Restrepo was part of several of Davis’ top recruiting classes, including All-Americans Quincy Amirakwa (the Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2008 and Guided Chico the San Jose Earthquakes’ third round pick in the ’09 Major League Soccer Super State to a 13-5-1 Draft) and Dylan Curtis (2008’s Big West Conference Midfi elder of the Year). Restrepo’s fi rst two seasons at UC Davis were the school’s fi nal two as a member of record and fi rst Chico State’s current conference, the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Over postseason ap- those two seasons, Restrepo helped lead the Aggies to a 26-12-2 record, including 18- pearance since 9-1 in the CCAA, and a pair of top-fi ve regional rankings. Before arriving at UC Davis, Restrepo spent three years as an assistant coach 2003 in fi rst season at CSU Monterey Bay while completing his master's degree in education. While at CSUMB, Restrepo helped develop a brand-new program. During his tenure, the Otters UC Davis assistant made two conference tournament appearances and earned a berth in the confer- for seven seasons: ence title game. As a player, Restrepo was a four-year letterwinner at UC Davis from his midfi elder 70-49-15 position. He started 52 of his fi nal 55 games and during his junior year was a second- team All-Northern California Athletic Conference selection. Restrepo and his wife, Mandi, have a son, Diego, and a daughter, Eliana.

Donny Ribaudo - Assistant Coach Donny Ribaudo begins his fourth year as the team's assistant coach. He played at Chico State from 2000-01, netting four goals and four assists. Ribaudo then played professionally for the Chico Rooks and was part of a national championship squad in 2004. He also spent time training with the Cleveland Force and Dallas Sidekicks of the Major Indoor Soccer League, and spent two months training with the Tahuichi Soccer Club in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. He earned his National Diploma from the NSCAA in 2007, and has also worked at the Cavitt Soccer Academy. A 2003 graduate of Chico State, Ribaudo added a master's degree from Chico State in 2008.

Brad Williams - Goalkeeper Coach Brad Williams begins his tenure as the goalkeeper coach for the men's and women's programs this season. A four-year letterman and 2008 graduate of Saint Francis Uni- versity (Pa.), Williams is that school's all-time leader in goals-against-average (0.90), saves percentage (.805), and shutouts (17). He earned a degree in marketing. An assistant at Cal State East Bay last season, Williams was the goalkeeper director for the Dublin United Soccer League U-11 and U-12 boys and holds a NSCAA National Diploma and CYSA goalkeepers license. He is enrolled in the Masters' program of kinesiology at Chico State.

33 Chico State Soccer 2009 'Cats Have Lofty Goals Once Again

The Chico State women’s soccer team went into the 2008 campaign full of confi dence and optimism, with a second straight California Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAA) title and a long stay in the NCAA Championship Tournament fi xed squarely in its radar. The ’Cats came up short, however, stumbling to a 7-10-3 record – the program’s fi rst sub-.500 season since 2001. Despite the setback, this year’s Wildcats squad has no less confi dence or lofty goals as its predecessor, and will rely on a talented but relatively young roster to return Chico State to the familiar role of conference contender in 2009. Kim Sutton, now in her ninth season as head coach, is convinced this year’s team – while noticeably younger – possesses the experience and more than enough hunger to reverse 2008’s disappointing results. “Although we only have four seniors, they all have depth to their playing time,” said Sutton. “We have three juniors who have played quality minutes for two years, and our sophomore class – the bulk of the squad – is solid. Quite a number of our sophomores redshirted their freshman year, so this is really their third year in the program. As a result, we have several players who have had a season of starting and a lot of minutes under their belts, so there’ll be a lot of ‘veterans’ on the fi eld, even though we’re young.” Sutton has been impressed with the leadership displayed by various Wildcats during spring competi- tion. “A lot of kids really stepped up,” Sutton said. “Sometimes you learn more when you aren’t successful, and after noting a lack of leadership last year, they now have a clear idea of how to make things work for this season.” For the Wildcats to contend, they’ll have to beef up an offensive attack that scored only 23 goals last year (and just fi ve in their fi nal eight matches). Senior forward Ali Sward, who netted three goals in 2008 and earned second team All-CCAA honors, will be asked to be the ’Cats offensive catalyst. “Ali defi nitely needs to have a solid year,” said Sutton. “We’re going to be looking to her to create a lot of chances. She doesn’t have to be a leading goal scorer, but we’ll need her to be a big assist player.” Ashley Perlman, described by Sutton as “a very tenacious workhorse,” also fi gures to see a lot of minutes up front. Fifth year senior Molly McMadden and sophomore Lisa Webster will be utilized as wings on the of- fensive line and should have ample scoring and assist opportunities. The Wildcats will utilize several target players this season to bolster their offensive attack, including sophomore Brittany Westrum, a transfer from the University of Oregon; freshman Denni Jo Berger (a dynamic high school and club player from Claremont), and returning redshirt freshmen Megan Rausch and Melissa Pease. The Wildcats have no shortage of talent among their midfi elders. Junior Kelsey Ikemoto (who in her third 34 Mental strength a key year in the program “has developed into quite a leader on this team,” according to Sutton) has meshed well with sophomores Jackie Thomas and Blake Lopes during the spring, and that trio should shoulder the majority of midfi eld work. Newcomers Sadi' Stouder (the state Player of the Year from Oregon’s Philomath High School) and Courtney Geis, who starred at Capital High School in Boise, Idaho, and was part of the highly regarded Les Bois club team, will also compete for playing time. Freshmen Michelle Grek and Jennie Barto – redshirts last season – will also see action and add to the Wildcats’ depth at the midfi elder position. Chico State is well stocked with talented defenders. Sophomore Kasey Wall, who contributed a goal and two assists her freshman year, will see action as center back. Sophomore Molly Downtain, who started as a freshman in 2007 but sat out last season with an ACL injury, is once again healthy and ready to be a leader on the back line. Senior Alex Rodriguez, junior Carly Atkins and freshman Shelby Dunlap should see a considerable amount of playing time, while redshirt freshman Sarah Steele will also challenge for minutes. Senior goalkeeper Natalie Bensky returns along with sophomore Lauren Vance to tend net for the Wild- cats in 2009. Bensky saw the majority of playing time last season, winning fi ve games (including four shutouts) while posting a 1.37 goals against average and .723 saves percentage. Vance chalked up a pair of victories and a 1.27 goals against average in ’08. The Wildcats’ coaching staff will have a new look this year as well. Kari Gonzales will return for a second season, and joining Sutton on the sidelines is new assistant coach Nicole Motl, who brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the program. “Nicole will be a really good infl uence on the team,” Sutton said. “She comes in with great knowledge of what team dynamics should be. She’ll take on a lot of responsibility coaching in games and running the back line for us.” Also on board is Brad Williams, who comes via Cal State East Bay to serve as goalkeeper coach. Sutton is optimistic about the Wildcats’ chances in 2009, but knows her players will have to execute both mentally and physically to be successful. “I feel like the talent’s there,” said Sutton. “We need to be more ‘gritty,’ though…our perseverance and mental toughness has to be stronger this year. Team cohesion will be key. If we can win a few games early, it will give us the confi dence level we’ll need to put together a very special season.” One thing’s for sure: the Wildcats will be providing their usual share of excitement at University Soccer Stadium. And if everything falls into place, there’s no telling how far the Chico State women’s soccer team can go this season. A CCAA North Division crown, a conference championship…even the program’s fourth NCAA Championship Tournament appearance in the last six years is well within reach. Wildcats picked to fi nish 2nd in North The Chico State women's soccer team is expected to be a major player in the race for the 2009 California Col- legiate Athletic Association (CCAA) title. A preseason poll of conference coaches has the Wildcats picked to fi nish second in the North Division and earn one of the CCAA’s four postseason tournament spots. Sonoma State, which tied San Francisco State for the North Division crown a year ago, was picked by CCAA coaches to repeat, garnering nine of 12 fi rst place votes. Chico State received the remaining three fi rst place votes in being chosen to fi nish second in the division.

54 Rarely does one fi nd a single setting which combines the best of location, setting, tradition, op- portunity, and people. Chico State is one of those special places. Despite an enrollment of about 16,000 students, Chico State strikes a balance between the warm, social atmosphere of a small campus and the educational and cultural opportunities of a large school. Chico is located 90 miles north of Sacramento, eight miles from the Sacramento River, and two miles from the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Several creeks fl ow through the community, including Big Chico Creek, which winds through a canopy of trees across the Chico State campus and downtown Chico. The CHICO STATE campus was declared an arboretum in 1982, an indication of the desire to preserve and enhance its natural beauty. The city of Chico is the proprietor of today Bidwell Park, which, with its 3,600 acres, is one of the largest municipal parks in the nation. An 18-hole golf decides tomorrow course; softball diamonds; picnic areas; equestrian, jogging, mountain biking and hiking trails; and natural swimming holes along the creek, among other recre- ational facilities, are available. The atmosphere on the Chico State campus is determined in part by its rural setting. The general openness and friendliness found in the campus com- munity sometimes surprises those familiar with larger, more urban campuses. This openness extends to academic matters, where students fi nd that their professors are accessible to them, that instructors are willing to spend time with them on an individual basis, and that Chico State is a place where teaching and learning really matter. Chico's 16,000 students are divided about equally between men and women. Eighty-fi ve percent are full-time students. Eighty percent come from home- towns over 100 miles from Chico. Seventy-six percent live within walking or bicycling distance of campus. Over half receive letters of acceptance from other colleges but choose Chico's dynamic intellectual and social environment. The university has a traditionally strong and varied academic instructional program. Chico's library contains more than 950,000 books, serial back fi les, electronic documents and government documents; 23,117 current serial subscriptions; and 1.27 million historical photos, maps, and other items in archives. Facilities for music, drama, and art enable students to participate in cultural and educational experi- ences. A planetarium, working farm, two satellite telecommunications broadcast antennae, and a rich complement of laboratories, computers, and other modern equipment help students test and confi rm theoretical learning. The university sponsors more than 240 student organizations. Over 500 cultural festivals, exhibits, concerts, and other public events occur on campus each year.
