The Toreros lost seniors Kasi in Tucker, Lindsey Fleet, and Katie Jo Nelson, all of whom were starters for the 2009 Torero team. Coach McElvain, in her 9th season, will look to reach the 1SO-win milestone this season. The coaching staff brought in seven freshmen this year. The new faces include Mickell Escobar, Chelsea Kamai, Kimberlee Shimizu, Allison Stalberger, Lauren Tomey, Chelsea Velovich, and Kierstie Svatos. These players will join the roster that includes six seniors, three juniors and three sophomores to give them a total of 20 players.

He will have the responsibility for the day-to-day operation and management of the department including compliance, personnel, programs, facilities and operations. Mike also supervises men's basketball, women's basketball, women's soccer and men's . V)~ He currently serves on two West Coast Conference committees (Championships and Sportsmanship), as well as one national committee (NCAA Cabinet for Student Athlete Welfare, Financial Aid and Extra Benefits). r­ Mato so had held the title of Associate Athletics Director for Compliance and Administration beginning in the Fall of 2003, e::::: and was the department's Compliance Coordinator for five years. Mike started his Torero career as the department's Academic 0 Support Coordinator. a.. Prior to USO, he spent three years as the Academic Counselor at USC where he worked with the football, , wom­ a.. en's soccer, and volleyball programs. Prior to USC, Mike served as the Academic Advisor for all 18 intercollegiate pro­ grams at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for two years. He earned both his B.S. degree in Physical Education (1993) and M.A. in Education, ::::> in the Division II College World Series. V) Counseling (1994) from Cal Poly. In this role, his responsibilities included overseeing the Aztecs' marketing and corporate sales efforts, along with media relations, facilities and the operations departments. From April through July of 2005, Becvar served as the interim athletics director at SDSU. 0 Prior to working at SDSU, Becvar was the Director of Sponsorship and Corporate Sales for the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies V) from 2001-2003, where he navigated the team's corporate relations efforts by sparking local community involvement and tran­ ::::> sitioning the team's relocation from Vancouver. The Maryland native was a key figure in laying the groundwork for the XFL's Memphis Maniax during the team's inaugural 2000-01 campaign, as the vice president of sales and marketing. In this role, Becvar oversaw many of the team's daily operations, including hiring staff, managing the budget, negotiating business contracts and developing facilities. Prior to his stints with the Memphis Grizzlies and Maniax, he was the Associate Athletics Director for Development and Marketing for the Air Force Academy athletics department. A two sport athlete (basketball and baseball) at Ohio University, Becvar graduated with an undergraduate degree in Business Management and Masters Degree in Sports Administration. Steve and his wife Jo have three children, Stephanie (17), David (14) and Terrence (11 ), and reside in Valley Center.

sh an ey Fink, Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Women's Administrator

Shaney Fink begins her ninth year with USO and her fourth in the role of Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Student Services/Senior Woman Administrator. She will also have sports supervision for women's volleyball and women's tennis. Prior to her current position, she was Assistant Director of Athletics for Academics and Student Services, and since her arrival at USO has overseen the Academic Support Program. During the 1999 season she assisted the Torero volleyball coaching staff, helping the Toreros to a 23-6 record and second round finish in the NCAA Tournament. Prior to USO she gained coaching experience at the high school, college and international levels for four years. She capped off a stellar collegiate career (1990-93) at Cal Berkeley and won selection to the All-Pac 1 ODecade Team. Fink earned her B.A. in Social Science from Berkeley in 1994. In the spring of 2004 she earned her Masters Degree at USO in Counseling. Shaney and her husband, Tom Vorkoper, reside in Encinitas with their three children - Lucas, Mia and Leon.

Sara beth Pol lock, Coor. of Athletic Academic Support Pollock begins her sixth year as the Coordinator of Athletic Academic Support for the University of San Diego. She has worked as a tutor in the Athletic Department since the fall of 2001 . She serves as the academic advisor for Softball, Volleyball, Swimming and Diving, Men's and Women's Soccer, Men's Tennis, Men's and Women's Cross Country/Track, Men's and Women's Rowing, and Golf. Her responsibilities include the supervision of the Study Hall and the administration of the tutoring and mentoring programs. Currently, the Academic Support Program employs over 30 tutors who represent a variety of majors across campus, as well as a team of trained graduate-student mentors who assist with academic skill development and the monitoring of coursework. Sara beth graduated from USO in 2002 in the Honors Program, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and History. She speaks Spanish and French fluently. A 5th generation San Diegan, she resides in Point Loma with her family. Sarabeth will start working on her Master's degree in History in the coming academic year. Whitney Strain, Athletics Operations Manager C ~ Whitney Strain is in her second year with USD, and first in the position of athletic operations manager. Whitney worked as the administrative assistant in the athletics administrative office for the past year. In addition to her regular duties of helping to run 0 the main office, Whitney took on additional challenges working in compliance and eligibility certification, as well as in opera­ ~ tions - serving as operations assistant during the 2009 WCC Basketball Tournament in Las Vegas. Before coming to USD, Whitney was the championships and marketing assistant at the West Coast Conference office and did events management for Stanford 0 University. Whitney graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communications and a B.B.A. in "'TI Marketing. While at Iowa she competed on the women's soccer team. -I In her new position, Whitney will assume responsibility for all game-day operations, including supervi sion of security, parking, 0:, visiting team practices and locker rooms, game-day staffing, scheduling of officials, scheduling athletic facilities, and assisting )> with ticketing and event information. r r ~ C Justine Coliflores, Softball Athletic Trainer ""'O ""'O Justine has been a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the University of San Diego since August 2008. Her Primary sport assign­ ments are women's soccer, swimming and diving, men's rowing, and softball. While completing her undergraduate degree Justine 0 worked as an ath letic training student at Grossmont Community College in the fa ll of 2006. Her primary sports were football and :::0 women 's voll eyball. Justine then completed her clinical rotation at USD from spring 2007 to spring 2008 where s he worked with softball , swimming and diving, women's soccer, and baseball. She wi ll be attending graduate school for Kinesiology, with a special­ -I ization in rehabilitative sciences, at San Diego State University. ~ Born in Riverside, CA but later moved with her parents Luisito and Veronidia, and younger brother Lexie-John, to Corona, CA. Stephane Rochet, Dir. ofAthleticPerformanceTraining Stephane Rochet assumed the position of Head Strength of Conditioning Coach at USD in January 2007.

Prior to coming to USD, Rochet was an assistant strength and conditioning coach at UCLA (1999-2001 ), Indiana University (2001- 2003) and UC-Riverside (2004).

Rochet is certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (CSCS), USA Weightlifting, CrossFit and the Rus ­ sian Kettlebell Challenge. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Calgary and Master's degree from Ohio University.

Ryan Mccann, Media Relations Coordinator Ryan McCann is in hi s fifth year as the media relations coordinator. His duties include radio and TV liaiso n, producing media guides, press releases, brochures and game programs for numerous Torero sports. McCann also updates and maintains the athletic website for the sports that he is re sponsible for. Prior to USD, Mccann spent one year in South Korea teaching English to elementary and middle school students and was a SID student assistant at Linfield College. During the holidays, USD student-athletes help bring joy into the lives of less fortunate families of the Mission Valley YMCA through our annual TLC Toy Drive, Donate a Dollar and Adopt a Family pro­ grams. This past year, we adopted 17 families, do­ nated enough gifts for 60 children and purchased more than $1,700 in gift cards. This year, selected members of the softball team participated in the Junior Seau Shop with a Jock event where boys and girls are matched up with a local athlete or celebrity and given money from the fund raiser to shop for christmas presents.
