Approximately 36 students are accepted and begin each fall semester for a two-year program. Dental hygiene didactic and clinical courses are conducted at the Higher Education Center at National City. Classes are held five (5) days per week. The program is full time (see page 7 for semester unit load). General Career Description A dental hygienist is a licensed, preventive oral health professional providing education, clinical, and therapeutic services to the public in a variety of settings. As the preventive specialist of the dental healthcare team, the dental hygienist promotes and maintains oral wellness through services such as oral health assessments, education, removal of soft and hard deposits from teeth, and use of adjunct services such as sealants, fluorides, and chemotherapeutic agents. As a healthcare professional, the dental hygienist is responsible for protecting and maintaining the confidentiality of information pertaining to the health status of individuals. Career Options Dental hygienists can provide preventive and therapeutic services in a dental office or clinic setting. They may also work in public health settings, schools, skilled nursing facilities and mobile clinics. Clinical practice requires a minimum of an associate degree education. The dental hygienist may also serve as an administrator/manager for community or state dental health programs; may provide sales and education for dental product companies; may be an educator in a dental hygiene or dental school program; or a researcher in a university or corporate setting. -

Heartland Summer League Information Practices: o Practices are very important. Please remind your child to listen and pay attention. o The focus of the first few weeks of practice will be on technique and instruction. o Please remember that your child is on a swim team and not taking swim lessons. The coaches instruct from the pool deck, not in the water. o Your child will learn all four competitive strokes, legal turns, starts, and various other techniques. We will stress the basics first and then move on to swimming faster. Parents, please let the coaches do their job. Swimmers get confused if they have too many people coaching them. Equipment: o Heartland will provide a team cap and T-shirt for each swimmer before the first meet. We ask that all swimmers wear a solid black Speedo swimsuit. o The suit can be purchased from Paradowski’s Swim and Sport, 7962 Convoy Ct., just off of Highway 52 and Convoy Street, or at El Cajon Valley High School 1035 E. Madison Ave, El Cajon on Saturday, June 9, 9 a.m. – Noon. You are not required to purchase a suit from Paradowskis but we do ask that you wear a black Speedo suit. Suits from previous summers may be worn. o Girls who have long hair should either wear their hair tied back securely or wear a cap. o Boys and girls will wear their team cap and suits in the meets so the coaches can easily identify the swimmers on their team. o Remember sunscreen and towels for both meets and practices. -

Snapshot of U.S. Department of Education Office of Safe and Healthy Students (OSHS) Safe and Supportive Schools (S3) Grant to California Department of Education TOTAL AMOUNT AWARDED TO CALIFORNIA (2010-2014): $2,220,770 CA S3 PROGRAM SUMMARY The California Safe and Supportive Schools (CA S3) grant primarily aimed to reduce high rates of drug- and violence-related behavior in 58 high schools across 26 school districts. CA S3 empowered students and engaged the community by supporting the implementation of more than 30 different programs, facilitating student “fishbowl” discussions at school sites, and developing briefs and tip sheets on a range of critical school climate topics. CA S3 worked with the participating districts and schools to use annual school climate survey data – as well as discipline, incident, and other administrative data – to choose and implement interventions tailored to those districts’ and schools’ specific populations and needs. Additionally, CA S3 successfully addressed challenges related to increasing stakeholder awareness on the relevance of school climate, building staff buy-in, and engaging parents. GOAL OF THE SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE SCHOOLS PROGRAM S3 grantees reported annually on the number of participating schools with: • A decreased percentage of students who reported alcohol use in the past 30 days; • A decreased percentage of students who reported harassment or bullying on school property; • Improvement of school safety scores (as defined by each grantee); and • A decrease in the number of suspensions for violence without injury.
