Surrounded by their intellectual equals off the field and their athletic equals on the field, student-athletes must strive to their limits to maintain their standing in both environments. LJCDS student-athletes are the most visible members of the school community and, as such, a student who elects to participate in athletics is voluntarily making a choice to represent him/herself, his/her family, his/her team and his/her school with dignity. The LJCDS athletic program provides our student-athletes with an opportunity to broaden their educational experiences through a wide assortment of team and individual sports. The many lessons learned in athletics will complement those taught at home. LJCDS athletics fosters personal integrity, work ethic, self-responsibility, responsibility to others, self-sacrifice, delayed gratification, teamwork, overcoming fears, attacking challenges, goal setting, the pursuit of excellence, community and being part of something greater than oneself. Student-athletes whose families share these principles will find participation in LJCDS athletics rewarding. And the pursuit and sharing of these ideals forges lifelong relationships among teammates, opponents and coaches. A thoughtful and well-organized athletic program includes a philosophy, best practices and regulations that govern the spirit of competition for the school. These principles require a broad basis of community understanding which is achieved through communication to our student-athletes and their parents and our faculty, staff and administration. We hope to accomplish our objective through this athletic handbook. If at any time you have questions or concerns, please call me so that we can discuss possible solutions. Jeff Hutzler Director of Athletics and Physical Education Upper School Athletics Page | 3 Table of Contents last updated: 5/8/2018 Athletic Director Jeff Hutzler This is Jeff Hutzler’s 18th year as La Jolla Country Day School’s director of athletics and physical education. One Hundred and eighty-four championship banners (110 league/conference, 56 CIF, 12 Southern Regional and 6 State) have gone up in the Smith Gymnasium during Coach Hutzler’s 17 years as athletic director with Torrey baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s cross country, football, men’s golf, softball, women’s soccer, men’s swimming, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, men’s track and field, women’s volleyball and men’s water polo teams capturing championships in recent years. In 2017–2018, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball teams competed in the CIF San Diego Section Open Division; the county’s eight elite programs regardless of enrollment. Nineteen members of the class of 2018 will play baseball (3), basketball (5), football, soccer, tennis, volleyball, softball (3), swimming, lacrosse, cross country/track and water polo at the college level at Columbia University (2), Tufts, NYU (2), MIT, Cal Poly Pomona, USD, UCSD (2), UC Davis, College of Wooster, Northwestern (2), Juniata College, Cal Baptists, Soka University, Swarthmore and Cal State SLO. Seventy-one former Torreys will compete for the nation’s finest college athletic programs in 2018–2019, including six competing in the Pac-12 Conference and 11 in the Ivy League. Alfonso Rivas ’15 (Arizona) was drafted by MLB, Oakland Athletics in the spring of 2018, the third former Torrey baseball player drafted in the past seven years. LJCDS students participate in athletics at a rate that is among California’s highest; 80 percent of the Upper School and 98 percent of the Middle School participated on at least one athletic team in 2017–2018 with 140 Upper School students playing two sports and 26 earning three-sport recognition. Coach Hutzler’s football teams posted a win-loss record of 101–37 from 2002–2013 claiming six league and three CIF Championships. He was honored as one of California’s 13 Model Coaches in 2009, was selected the 2016–2017 San Diego High School Sports Association’s Athletic Director of the Year and was honored as a High School Coaching Legend by the San Diego Hall of Champions in 2017. Prior to coming to LJCDS, coach Hutzler coached football, track and field, men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball in Nevada, Los Angeles and upstate New York. He is a two-time Football Nevada State Coach of the Year, six-time Southern Nevada Track and Field Coach of the Year, was inducted into the Southern Nevada Track and Field Coaches Hall of Fame in 2005 and was inducted into The Meadows School (Las Vegas) Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017. Coach Hutzler grew up in Kailua, Hawaii. He competed in cross country, track and boxing at the University of Nevada where he earned a degree in education in 1983. He graduated from UNLV with a master’s degree in physical education in 2000. Athletes, coaches, parents and spectators are expected to abide by the Country Day Code of Sportsmanship (p.35). 2. “Quitting” is an intolerable habit to acquire. Joining a team represents a commitment to that team for the entire season. Therefore, a student-athlete who quits a team may not participate in the next LJCDS athletic season.

SUMMARY: Would enact, until January 1, 2028, the Athletic Training Practice Act for the purpose of licensing persons engaged in the profession of Athletic Trainer. Specifically, this bill: 1) Establishes, until January 1, 2028, the Athletic Training Practice Act and the 7 member California Board of Athletic Training within the Department of Consumer Affairs, comprised of: a) three licensed athletic trainers appointed by the Governor; b) three public members, one each appointed by the Governor, Senate Committee on Rules and Speaker of the Assembly, and; c) one physician and surgeon licensed by the Medical Board of California (MBC) or one osteopathic physician and surgeon licensed by the Osteopathic Medical Board of California (OMBC) appointed by the Governor. 2) Requires the Board to adopt, repeal, and amend regulations as may be necessary and authorizes the Board, prior to adopting regulations, to consult the professional standards issued by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), the Board of Certification, Inc. (BOC), the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE), or any other nationally recognized professional athletic training organization. 3) Specifies that the Board shall give protection of the public the highest priority and whenever the protection of the public is inconsistent with other interests sought to be promoted, the protection of the public shall be paramount. 4) States that except as otherwise provided in this chapter, the board shall issue an athletic training license to an applicant who meets all of the following requirements: a) At the time of application, the applicant is over 18 years of age, is not addicted to alcohol or any controlled substance, and has not committed acts or crimes constituting grounds for denial of a license under Section 480.
