The second in a series of conferences funded by the Spanish Program for Cultural Cooperation (SPCC) opened in the Hyatt-Regency in Tumon, Guam on October 16, 2008. The first conference sponsored by SPCC was held the previous year in Guam on Nov. 14-15, 2007, entitled “Stonework Heritage in Micronesia”, organized by the Guam Preservation Trust. It brought together and introduced technical experts in Spanish stonework and Spanish heritage architects to a gathering of historic preservation officials and scholars who live and work in Guam and Micronesia. -

Selection of items presented at the 2020 New York Antiquarian Book Fair (Full descriptions available on request) 1- Extraordinary Spanish medieval illuminated Antiphonal leaf given by the Catholic Kings of Spain to the Dominicans [Illuminated antiphonal leaf on vellum commissioned by the Catholic Kings]. Leaf from one of the most important antiphonals ever produced in Spain, presented by the Catholic Kings to the Dominican Convent Saint Thomas Aquinas [‘In nativitate virginis m introyto’]. c.1482-92. [Spain, probably Avila]. 35,000 $ This is an extraordinarily rare example of Spanish medieval art, “one of the most sumptuous and artistic series of choir-books in all Spain” (Bordona, Spanish Illumination). Enormous decorated leaf made for the Gradual of Ferdinand of Aragon (1452-1516) and his wife Isabella of Castille (1451-1504), joint rulers of Spain, known as the Catholic Monarchs, patrons of Christopher Columbus and conquerors of the last Spanish city still under Muslim rule (Granada). The dense decoration is constituted by an abundant flora and fauna (monkeys, birds, dears, and foxes), as well as putti, all painted in lively colors and gold. The arms emblazoned on this leaf can be dated to after their marriage in 1469 and to before their conquest of Granada in 1492. The Gradual was presented by the Catholic Kings to the Dominican Convent of Santo Tomas (Avila, in Old Castille), founded in 1478 and still in existence, as stated in Bordona’s Spanish Illumination. La historia va unida a los nombres de Luis Mario y Diego de Mazariegos en la reduc ción de la alta meseta; Pedro de Alvarado en el litoral del Pacífico, y el propio Hernán Cortés en la zona selvática de la cuenca del Usuma cinta. En efecto, fué en 1523 cuando Luis Mario recibió soldados e ins trucciones de Cortés para pacificar la región de Chiapas. Casi todo el te rritorio mexicano había sido hollado por aquel10s años, conquistándose a totonacas, mbttecas, zapatecas, tarascos, colimenses, por capitanes en tre los que se contaban Pedro de Alvarado, Gonzalo de Sandoval, Fran cisco de Orozco, Cristóbal de 01id, etc. Vino a tocarle a l .. u1s Marin, vie- 27 jo conquistador que figuró entre los capitanes del sitio de Mé'óco, 1 re cibir órdenes de Hernán Cortés para salir de la villa de Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, y pacificar a los indios no reducidos de Chiapas. Bernal Díaz describe a Luis MarÍn como "bueno e no era malicioso" y refiere los he chos de la primera entrada de españoles a Chiapas como testigo presen cial; Z Marin entró por Iztapa de donde avanzó al poblado indígena de Chiapa, cabeza de los señoríos indígenas de aquella región, pues tenían sometidos a zaques, tzendales y quelenes, no estando ellas sujetos a los aztecas, cuya más cercana guarnición era la de Zinacantán. 3 Por la cua resma de 1523, afirma Bernal Díaz, llegaron los españoles a Chiapa, cuyas defensas naturales las constituían encrespados riscos y el río Grijalva, de fensas que, dice Remesal, los habían preservado de las conquistas mexica nas. -

Technical Report Number 36 Alaska OCS Socioeconomic Studies Program Sponsor: Bureau of Land Management Alaska Outer Northern Gulf of Alaska Petroleum Development Scenarios Sociocultural Impacts The United States Department of the Interior was designated by the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Lands Act of 1953 to carry out the majority of the Act’s provisions for administering the mineral leasing and develop- ment of offshore areas of the United States under federal jurisdiction. Within the Department, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has the responsibility to meet requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) as well as other legislation and regulations dealing with the effects of offshore development. In Alaska, unique cultural differences and climatic conditions create a need for developing addi- tional socioeconomic and environmental information to improve OCS deci- sion making at all governmental levels. In fulfillment of its federal responsibilities and with an awareness of these additional information needs, the BLM has initiated several investigative programs, one of which is the Alaska OCS Socioeconomic Studies Program (SESP). The Alaska OCS Socioeconomic Studies Program is a multi-year research effort which attempts to predict and evaluate the effects of Alaska OCS Petroleum Development upon the physical, social, and economic environ- ments within the state. The overall methodology is divided into three broad research components. The first component identifies an alterna- tive set of assumptions regarding the location, the nature, and the timing of future petroleum events and related activities. In this component, the program takes into account the particular needs of the petroleum industry and projects the human, technological, economic, and environmental offshore and onshore development requirements of the regional petroleum industry. -

Birth of a Colony North Carolina Guide for Educators Act II—The Road to Zacatecas Birth of a Colony Guide for Educators Birth of a Colony explores the history of North Carolina from the time of European exploration through the Tuscarora War. Presented in five acts, the video combines primary sources and expert commentary to bring this period of our history to life. Use this study guide to enhance students’ understanding of the ideas and information presented in the video. The guide is organized according to the video’s five acts. Included for each act are a synopsis, a vocabulary list, discussion questions, and lesson plans. Going over the vocabulary with students before watching the video will help them better understand the film’s content. Discussion questions will encourage students to think critically about what they have viewed. Lesson plans extend the subject matter, providing more information or opportunity for reflection. The lesson plans follow the new Standard Course of Study framework that takes effect with the 2012–2013 school year. With some adjustments, most of the questions and activities can be adapted for the viewing audience. Birth of a Colony was developed by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, in collaboration with UNC-TV and Horizon Productions. Sugar plantations, which relied heavily on the forced labor of the native people, flourished on the islands.
