    NEW VOICES IN CLASSICAL RECEPTION STUDIES Issue 12 (2018) SOPHOCLES’ ANTIGONE REWORKED IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: THE CASE OF HASENCLEVER’S ANTIGONE (1917) © Rossana Zetti (University of Edinburgh) INTRODUCTION AND CONTEXTUALIZATION This article examines a little-known example of Antigone’s reception in the twentieth century: the adaptation by the German expressionist writer Walter Hasenclever. This version is the first and arguably most innovative of several European adaptations of Sophocles’ play to appear in the first half of the twentieth century. Although successful at the time of its production, Hasenclever’s Antigone is scarcely read in contemporary scholarship and is discussed mainly in German-language scholarship.1 Whereas Flashar’s wide-ranging study, in German, refers to Hasenclever’s drama (Flashar 2009: 127– 29), in Fischer-Lichte’s 2017 book Tragedy’s Endurance, in English, Hasenclever appears only in one endnote (Fischer-Lichte 2017: 143). The only English translation of the play available (Ritchie and Stowell 1969: 113–60) is rather out of date and inaccessible. Hasenclever’s Antigone is briefly mentioned in Steiner’s essential reference book Antigones (Steiner 1984: 142; 146; 170; 218), in the chapter on Antigone in the recent Brill’s Companion to the Reception of Sophocles (Silva 2017: 406–7) and in Cairns’ 2016 book on Sophocles’ Antigone (Cairns 2016: 133). However, it is absent in some of the most recent contributions dedicated to the play’s modern reception, including Wilmer’s and Žukauskaitė’s edited collection on Antigone in postmodern thought (2010), Mee’s and Foley’s essays (2011) discussing adaptations of Antigone staged around the world, and Morais’, Hardwick’s and Silva’s recent volume (2017).2 The absence of Hasenclever from contemporary scholarship can be explained by the fact that his Antigone lacks the complexity of later adaptations, such as Anouilh’s and Brecht’s.

W jednej z najważniej szych współczesnych syntez poświęconych dziejom polskiej kultury Maria Bogucka z perspektywy ogólnopolskiej podzieliła interesujący nas czas na następujące etapy:- okres stalinizacji (1944–1953), odwilż i przełom październikowy (1953–1958)1 oraz popaździernikowy konflikt między władzą a twórcami (1959–1989) . Paradoksal nie, dość podobnego podziału czasowego dokonał w 1986 roku działacz partyjny i związany z Górnym Śląskiem krytyk literacki Witold Nawrocki, wydzielając trzy podokresy: lata 1944–1948 (etap pluralistycznego rozwoju i budowy programów),- lata 1949–1955 (etap formowania programu realizmu socjalistycznego)2 oraz lata 1955–1980 (czas sporu i rywalizacji wewnątrz środowiska twórców) . Nieco ina- czej wyglądała sytuacja twórców w przypadku Górnego Śląska, regionu przed wojną uznawanego w tym wymiarze za peryferyjny wobec reszty kraju, charakteryzują- cego się zresztą stosunkowo nieliczną grupą inteligencji (zwłaszcza humanistów). Doctor of Education (College Teaching of Theatre), December, 1982, 191 pp., bibliography, 184 titles. This study explored the relationship between the dramatic and the educational theories developed by Bertolt Brecht and selected twentieth-century theories of pedagogy. A survey of Brecht's life and works revealed that although the stimulus-response theories of the associationist psy- chologists were inappropriate to Brecht's concepts, the three principal aspects of Gestaltism—perception, insight, and life space, as formulated by Max Wertheimer, Kurt Koffka, Wolfgang Kohler, and Kurt Lewin—seemed profoundly related to Brecht's concern with man's ability to perceive and to learn about his environment. Brecht strove to create perceptual images of historical environments. The characters, who represented various ideologies and philosophies in situations which stimulated insightful learning, struggled with life spaces that accu- rately resembled life outside the theatre. Thus, Brecht utilized elements of the theories of perception, insight, and life space in his dramas as he strove to force his audiences to perceive the characters' environments, to grasp the significance and relationships between the characters' environments and their own social milieu, and to recognize those influences in one's life space which attract or repel the individual.

At 4 out of 5 stars I would still recommend The Man in the Rubber Mask for any diehard Dwarfer keen to further develop their knowledge of the show. Whether this is because the comedy level has increased from the previous book, or because I have become more comfortable or more at ease with the personalities of these characters, who can really say. Robert recalls the long arduous hours spent in makeup before filming could even begin and the various trials and tribulations of wearing a latex foam face mask and all over bodysuit, especially on things like his inability to eat lunch while on set. My review of book one, Dial G for Gravity can be found here. An irrelevant boop I must confess, however the lack of attention to detail rather grates on my nerves. All in all Dial G for Gravity is a pretty good space comedy, with well thought out characters and some interesting alien races in the Gloabons, Andelians and the Kreitians. Four Past Midnight Collection. Luca Rossi writes in a simple, easy to read prose that flows nicely as the characters develop and the story gradually unfolds.
