Within Scandinavian linguistics, two specific fields of study have aroused particular interest among linguistic scientists world wide: Old Norse and Norwegian language planning and policy. For a long time, there have been conferences on Old Norse studies. However, until now, no con- ference or symposium has been dedicated specifically to the second field: Language planning and policy in modern Norway. The reason why Norwegian language planning and policy have received so much international attention is primarily due to the works and contributions of Einar Haugen (1906–1994). His influ- ential theoretical model of language planning activities was based on empirical data from the de- velopment of modern Norwegian. His seminal 1966 book Language planning and language con- flict: the case of modern Norwegian as well as other works laid the foundation for the study and research of Language Planning as a separate area within the broad subject of linguistic studies. -
The Concept of Halvemål in Norwegian Linguistics – a Historiographical Account
ejss 2020; 50(1): 83–110 Stian Hårstad* The Concept of Halvemål in Norwegian Linguistics – a Historiographical Account https://doi.org/10.1515/ejss-2020-0005 Abstract: This paper explores the historical background and application of the concept halvemål in Norwegian linguistics, with particular regard to the disci- plines of dialectology and onomasiology. The concept occurs in numerous stud- ies and serves as an apt illustration of how a folk notion may evolve into a rec- ognized scientifc term. The paper gives a detailed account of the employment of the term, and shows that its signifcation difers noticeably in diferent schol- arly contexts. The study further indicates that the concept has been considered “quasi-scientifc” by several scholars, possibly because of its background as a lay explanation. Introduction1 The Norwegian feld of dialectology prospered from the last decades of the 1800s onwards, and in a 1962 review article, Oskar Bandle, the Swiss Nordist, concludes that the discipline had by then brought forward “rather considerable achieve- ments.”2 In addition to paying tribute to the inventor of dialect research in Nor- way, the autodidact Ivar Aasen (1813–1896), Bandle highlights the contributions of Johan Storm (1836–1920), Marius Hægstad (1850–1927), and Amund B. Larsen (1849–1928), all of whom are considered representatives of a predominantly Ger- man Neogrammarian tradition (Bandle 1962, 301). How strong the infuences from the German academic milieus actually were has since been debated (cf. Venås, 1986; 2001; Jahr 1996; Hovdhaugen et al. 2000; Sandøy 2013). In any case, there is little doubt that many of the fundamental Neogrammarian concepts, such as “sound law” and “analogy,” found their way to Norway, more or less directly from 1 I wish to thank EJSS’ anonymous reviewer for valuable suggestions and ideas. -

OCCASIONAL PAPERS in ARCHAEOLOGY 34 Alexandra Sanmark
OCCASIONAL PAPERS IN ARCHAEOLOGY 34 Alexandra Sanmark POWER AND CONVERSION - A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF CHRISTIANIZATION IN SCANDINAVIA University College London 2002 Ph.D. Thesis Department of Archaeology and Ancient History, Uppsala University, 2004 D0ctoral thesis from University College London 2002, revised 2003 ABSTRACT Sanmark, Alexandra 2004. Power and Conversion - a Comparative Study of Chris- tianization in Scandinavia. Occasional Papers in Archaeology 34. Uppsala. 322 pp., 5 maps, 13 figs, 4 diagrams, 1 table. ISSN 1100-6358, ISBN 91-506-1739-7. This book examines the Christianization of Scandinavia with the help of comparative material from Anglo-Saxon England, Old Frisia and Old Saxony. It is shown that Christianity spread from secular rulers and aristocracy downwards in society. In order to achieve widespread acceptance of Christianity, rulers employed specific measures, mainly legislation and material support to clerics. It is clear that in the conversion process, missionaries were necessary, but subordinate to secular rulers. Various kinds of pressure were present in all conversions covered by this study, ranging from mild inducement to brutal force. The conversion of Saxony was particularly violent. While not as harsh, the conversion of Norway belongs in the same part of the spectrum. Forceful conversions included the use of military force, but also the introduction of strict laws and rigorous control systems. Rewards of social, political and material nature were however also significant. Most important among the new laws were those that regulated the daily life of the population according to the Christian calendar, requiring observance of the seasonal fasts, Sundays and feast days. Other early decrees concerned baptism, churchyard burial and marriage regulations. -
