Sumida, History Department What happened in the Philippine Islands between the surrender of Allied forces in May 1942 and MacArthur’s return in October 1944? Existing historiography is fragmentary and incomplete. Memoirs suffer from limited points of view and personal biases. No academic study has examined the Filipino resistance with a critical and interdisciplinary approach. No comprehensive narrative has yet captured the fighting by 260,000 guerrillas in 277 units across the archipelago. This dissertation begins with the political, economic, social and cultural history of Philippine guerrilla warfare. The diverse Islands connected only through kinship networks. The Americans reluctantly held the Islands against rising Japanese imperial interests and Filipino desires for independence and social justice. World War II revealed the inadequacy of MacArthur’s plans to defend the Islands. The General tepidly prepared for guerrilla operations while Filipinos spontaneously rose in armed resistance. After his departure, the chaotic mix of guerrilla groups were left on their own to battle the Japanese and each other. While guerrilla leaders vied for local power, several obtained radios to contact MacArthur and his headquarters sent submarine-delivered agents with supplies and radios that tie these groups into a united framework. MacArthur’s promise to return kept the resistance alive and dependent on the United States. The repercussions for social revolution would be fatal but the Filipinos’ shared sacrifice revitalized national consciousness and created a sense of deserved nationhood. The guerrillas played a key role in enabling MacArthur’s return.

February, 1920) IT HAS been 5 years since the writer left the Philippine Islands and while in that country his chief work did not lie in this field, though he has visited all but one of the localities mentioned in this article. The princi­ pal field studies relating to oil were Ir. .de by his colleague, Mr. Wallace E. Pratt. The writer's investigations \ 9alt with the general stratigraphy and paleontology of the Philippines. \lith the exception of the investi­ gations made by Mr. Pratt and the writer very little information on this subject is available. A number of geologists in the employ of large oil companies have visited the Islands from time to time but, following the general rule, the public has scarcely ever been permitted to learn anything of the results. The writer is indebted to the Bureau of Insular Affairs, Washington, for late information regarding recent legislation in the Islands relating to petroleum. All the known oil seeps, petroleum residues, such as ozocerite, and natural-gas emanations are associated with Tertiary sediments. The chief seeps and most promising prospects are located as follows: 1. Bondoc Peninsula (lower end), TayabasProvince, Southeast Luzon. 2. The west coast of the island of CebU from Alegria north to, and perhaps beyond, Toledo. 3. Central Mindanao not far from Lake Lanao.

Mycosphere 6(6), 784–795, Doi 10.5943/mycosphere/6/6/12 Abstract Myxomycetes, commonly known as slime molds, are phagotrophic, eukaryotic organisms that exhibit both fungal and protozoan characteristics. They are widely distributed both in temperate and tropical ecoregions, where they usually occur on dead plant substrates, such as bark, twigs, dried leaves, woody vines, and even decayed inflorescences or fruits. Their unique, diverse morphologies and fascinating life strategies make them ideal model organisms to study life processes. However, despite the high potential diversity in tropical systems, little is known about them particularly in archipelagic countries, such as the Philippines. In fact, previous studies on myxomycetes in the Philippines in the late 70s and early 80s by Reynolds encompassed the most comprehensive listing for the country. A total of 107 species were recorded at that time for the Philippines and roughly 50% of these species represented new records for the country. But the paper was mainly an extensive, annotated species listing.

Wolfe, 1992, The 1991 Eruptions of Mount Pinatubo, Philippines: Earthquakes and Volcanoes, v.23, no.1. Introduction Recognition of the volcanic unrest at Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines began when steam explosions occurred on April 2, 1991. The unrest culminated ten weeks later in the world's largest eruption in more than half a century. Volcanologists of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), joined in late April by colleagues from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), successfully forecast the eruptive events and their effects, enabling Philippine civil leaders to organize massive evacuations that saved thousands of lives. The forecasts also led to the evacuation of Clark Air Base (U.S. Air Force), located just east of the volcano. Nevertheless, coincidence of the climactic eruption on June 15, 1991, with a typhoon led to more than 300 deaths and extensive property damage, both caused primarily by the extraordinarily broad distribution of heavy, water-saturated tephra-fall deposits. Runoff from monsoon and typhoon rains is eroding and redistributing the voluminous pyroclastic deposits emplaced during the eruption. The resulting lahars, floods, and sedimentation have exacerbated the already severe social disruption and will be an enormous recurring problem in future years. Mount Pinatubo is one of a chain of composite volcanoes (fig. 1 and 2) known as the Luzon volcanic arc. The arc parallels the west coast of the Island of Luzon and reflects eastward-dipping, subduction along the Manila Trench to the west. Mount Pinatubo is among the highest peaks in west-central Luzon.

It was organized in a national conference on networking for the wise and sustainable use of nature at the University of the Philippines College Baguio (now University of the Philippines Baguio) in April 2000. The participants saw the need for a network to address nature and nature- related problems on the country. Thus, the society was established in order to provide a venue for the development of strategies for the unscrupulous utilization of nature and its amenities. On September 16, 2000, the society was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as a non-profit, non-stock, non-partisan organization of Professionals, researchers, administration policymakers, practitioners, students, and organizations involved in nature studies and its related activities. The society’s primary objectives are to provide and develop strategies towards wise and sustainable use of nature and to ensure a faithful representation of responsible thinking and sentiment regarding issues about nature. It also seeks to established partnership and/ or collaboration with local government units and other institutions that are involved in the development, conservation, and management of nature resources, Its various activities serve as a channel for the exchange of information, sharing of professionals expertise, networking, and strengthening of camaraderie and cooperation among members and partner’s institutions.
