From the outset, then Franklin College was “dedicated to a new kind of international education, taking as its cornerstone Benjamin Franklin’s vigorous support of a universal, intellectual in- terchange.” Franklin earned accreditation as an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree-granting institution from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education in 1975. In the fall of 1986, the College opened the academic year as a four-year institution. In 1990, after an in- tensive three-year, in-depth self-study, the Middle States Commission affirmed the accreditation status of the college as a B.A. degree granting institution. In 2005, the Swiss University Conference (Schweizerische Universitätskonferenz) and the Swiss Organization for Quality Assurance (Organ für Akkreditierung und Qualitätssicherung der Schweizerischen Hochschulen) recognized all programs of study leading to the Franklin College B.A. degree. In 2012 Franklin was reaccredited by the Middle States Association, and in 2013 the Swiss University Conference accredited Franklin as a university institution. Franklin inaugurated its first graduate program, a M.S. in Interna- tional Management, in 2012. Franklin College officially became Franklin University Switzerland in November 2013. As a liberal arts institution since its foundation, Franklin University has emphasized what it has designated the “international imperative” in higher education. Today more than ever we see the growing urgency for experiential, international education. Frank- lin’s emphasis on cross-cultural perspectives is designed to affect the direction and meaning of a student’s university years, life and career. Accordingly, the University ad- vocates that substantive international studies should be an integrated part of a univer- sity education as both a prelude to and a basis for the commitment to a major field of study. This commitment to providing courses of study which are international in per- spective and cross-cultural in content remains the cornerstone of the educational mis- sion of the University in the global environment of the 21st century. 7 FranklinTHE UniversityFRANKLIN Switzerland provides MISSION a cross-cultural and multinational learning and living environment that inspires students to engage the world. It has been deemed “ferocious,” “a death-defying linguistic tightrope act,” and a combination of “dark and spiky emotions” in reviews appearing in popular newspapers. Taking the considerable critical investment in the affective dimension of Ferrante’s work as a point of departure, my dissertation examines the representation of emotions in My Brilliant Friend and in two Italian novels written between the 1960s and the 1970s – La Storia (1974, History: A Novel) by Elsa Morante (1912-1985) and L’arte della gioia (The Art of Joy, 1998/2008) by Goliarda Sapienza (1924-1996).

    “I Am Afraid Americans Cannot Understand” The Congress for Cultural Freedom in France and Italy, 1950–1957 ✣ Andrea Scionti Culture was a crucial yet elusive battlefield of the Cold War. Both superpowers tried to promote their way of life and values to the world but had to do so care- fully. The means adopted by the United States included not only propaganda and the use of mass media such as cinema and television but also efforts to help shape the world of highbrow culture and the arts. The Congress for Cultural Freedom (CCF), an organization sponsored by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), offered U.S. policymakers and intellectuals the opportunity to provide indirect support for anti-Communist intellectuals without being openly associated with their activities. Although the CCF represented one of the main instruments for the United States to try to win the hearts and minds of postwar Europe, it also created new challenges for U.S. Cold War- riors. By tying themselves to the European intelligentsia, they were forced to mediate between different societies, cultures, and intellectual traditions. This article looks at the contexts of France and Italy to highlight this interplay of competing notions of anti-Communism and cultural freedom and how the local actors involved helped redefine the character and limits of U.S. cultural diplomacy. Although scholars have looked at the CCF and its significance, es- pecially in the Anglo-Saxon world, a focus on French and Italian intellectuals can offer fresh insights into this subject. The Congress for Cultural Freedom was the product of a convergence of interests between the CIA’s recently established Office of Policy Coordination (OPC) and a small number of American and European intellectuals, many of them former Communists, concerned about the perceived success of the Soviet cultural offensive in Western Europe.

Accanto all’attività di poetessa e pittrice prima e di narratrice poi, Romano ha costantemente collaborato con quotidiani e riviste; per lunghi periodi è stata titolare di rubriche di recensioni e ha avuto quindi modo di analizzare un vasto numero di opere di autori suoi contemporanei. Accanto alla bibliografia completa vengono qui presentati alcuni testi inediti ritrovati e una serie di articoli recuperati, ordinati e trascritti, mai editi in volume2.

Maternità e identità femminile nella letteratura e cultura italiane Laura Lazzari AAUW International Postdoctoral Fellow, Georgetown University Affiliated Research Faculty, Franklin University Switzerland Joy Charnley Independent Researcher, Glasgow ABSTRACT This volume of intervalla centres on the themes of choice and conflict, refusal and rejection, and analyses how mothers and non-mothers are perceived in Italian society. The nine essays cover a variety of genres (novel, auto-fiction, theatre) and predominantly address how these perceptions are translated into literary form, ranging from the 1940s to the early twenty-first century. They study topics such as the ambivalent feelings and difficult experiences associated with motherhood (doubt, post-natal depression, infanticide, IVF), the impact of motherhood and non-motherhood on female identity, attitudes towards childless/childfree women, the stereotype of the “good mother,” and the ways in which such stereotypes are rejected, challenged or subverted. Major Italian writers, such as Lalla Romano, Paola Masino, Oriana Fallaci, Laudomia Bonanni and Elena Ferrante, are included in these analyses, alongside contemporary “momoirs” and works by Valeria Parrella, Lisa Corva, Eleonora Mazzoni, Cristina Comencini and Grazia Verasani. The book lends itself to an interpretation that applies a consideration of Silone’s recently revealed and complicated biography with a reflection on the current occupant of the papacy, Pope Francis, as a way to articulate how flawed humans can experience transcendent and transformative possibilities when they lead with humility. Although needing to rewrite implies failure, in Silone’s formulation, the failure, while his, is not his alone. Failing to fit a humble Christian in to the machinery of the world is characteristic of human organizations built by flawed individuals.
