ACTIVITIES and TOURS 02 Windhoek Welcome to Windhoek The charm of the City of Windhoek lies in its harmonious blend of African and European cultures and the friendliness of its people. Since Independence came to the country on 21 March 1990, it has been characterised by a vitality born of a sense of freedom and pride in self. Windhoek is often described as one of the cleanest capitals in Africa and visitors are surprised that this city, considered to be part of deepest Africa, offers all modern amenities that conform to some of the world’s highest standards. These include hotels, banks, post offices, gyms, libraries, museums, car hire companies, health facilities, railway transport, airlines and estate agencies amongst others. 03 CITYWINDHOEK TOUR We visit the Christ Church, a historic landmark that was built following the wars between the Germans, Khoikhoi, Herero and Owambo. The tour continues to The Ink Palace (Tintenpalast), currently the seat of the National Assembly and Parliament Gardens, containing Namibia’s first post-independence monument, a bronze statue of the Herero Chief Hosea Kutako. We visit the Rider Memorial, a controversial monument that honours the soldiers and civilians who died on the German side in the Herero and Namaqua War, as well as the Railway Station, built in a Cape Dutch style, and the Old Fort, designed to serve as headquarters of the imperial German Schutztruppe during the German colonization of South-West Africa. Windhoek City Tour 3 Hours (10h00 or 14h00) Minimum 4 guests @ N$350.00 p/p 04 TOWNSHIP Drive outTOUR to Katutura Township. Created in the late 1950s as an apartheid township. However, before Katutura was developed, most black Namibians lived in a location west of Windhoek in the area now known as Hochland Park. There was great opposition to the move. These objections were both practical and ideological. The original Katutura was much smaller than the Katutura that exists today. Windhoek’s total population is currently around 350 000 people, about 60% of these people live in Katutura. There are many suburbs of Katutura with poignant names such as Soweto, Havana, Babylon and Wanaheda. The tour itself last around 3 hours and is very informative, amongst other places it visits the Penduka Women’s Centre. Penduka is a non-governmental development organisation working with women in Namibia. In the Oshiwambo and Otjiherero languages the word Penduka means “Wake Up!” Through this program they encourage and support women throughout the country to take charge of their lives. At once Namibia’s adventure capital and a surreal colonial remnant, part destination in its own right and part launch pad for an exploration of the Skeleton Coast and Namib Desert, this is a city with as much personality as it has sea frontage. Its half-timbered German architecture, seaside promenades and pervasive Gemütlichkeit (a distinctively German appreciation of comfort and hospitality), Swakopmund, especially out of season, can feel like a holiday town along Germany’s North Sea and Baltic coasts transplanted onto African soil. But the city is also thoroughly African and its multidimensional appeal means that most people end up staying longer than they planned. 13 FULL DAY 4X4 SANDWICH HARBORTOUR Sandwich Harbour, part of the Namib Naukluft Park, it’s a place Approximately 7 Hours many have heard of but very few have ever visited.
