We compiled and analyzed 101 accessiblereports of 194 individual Kirtland’s Warblers (Dendroica kirtlandii) from the Bahama Archipelago, 1841-1997. Most individuals were reportedfrom northernislands (88%), and most sightreports (84%) and specimen/banding records(76%) were on island groupsthat supportor formerly supportedopen woodlandsof Caribbeanpine (Pinus curilxzea). Where habitat descriptionswere provided, 60% mentioned specificallypines or pine understory.After analysesfor potentialbiases from misidentification in sight reports and unequaleffort acrossislands, we found no evidence to supportprevious claims that Kirtland’s Warblersprefer scrubor avoid pine habitats.Rather, based upon 1995- 1997 winter surveysusing acoustic broadcasts, K&land ’s Warblerswere detectedin pine wood- landsof Abaco and Grand Bahamamore frequentlythan expectedcompared to encounterrates generatedby a null model of random habitatuse. A Modified Sverdrup Model of the Atlantic and Caribbean Circulation

WAJSOWICZ* Department of Meteorology, University of Maryland at College Park, College Park, Maryland (Manuscript received 9 October 2000, in ®nal form 6 August 2001) ABSTRACT An analytical model of the mean wind-driven circulation of the North Atlantic and Caribbean Sea is constructed based on linear dynamics and assumed existence of a level of no motion above all topography. The circulation around each island is calculated using the island rule, which is extended to describe an arbitrary length chain of overlapping islands. Frictional effects in the intervening straits are included by assuming a linear dependence on strait transport. Asymptotic expansions in the limit of strong and weak friction show that the transport streamfunction on an island boundary is dependent on wind stress over latitudes spanning the whole length of the island chain and spanning just immediately adjacent islands, respectively. The powerfulness of the method in enabling the wind stress bands, which determine a particular strait transport, to be readily identi®ed, is demonstrated by a brief explanation of transport similarities and differences in earlier numerical models forced by various climatological wind stress products. In the absence of frictional effects outside western boundary layers, some weaker strait transports are in the wrong direction (e.g., Santaren Channel) and others are too large (e.g., Old Bahama Channel). Also, there is no western boundary current to the east of Abaco Island. Including frictional effects in the straits enables many of these discrepancies to be resolved. -

E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] Resumen Entre los terrenos kársticos superficiales y subterráneos, las cuevas son, actualmente para determinados colectivos, el producto más interesante del karst y, que de forma creciente, ha atraído la curiosidad humana desde que los seres humanos habitan el Planeta. Prueba de ello son los restos de arte rupestre y yacimientos paleontológicos descritos en muchas cuevas o el creciente número de visitantes anuales que tienen. Sin embargo, en las últimas décadas los equipos de científicos y espeleólogos se han ocupado especialmente del karst en términos de cifras, con especial énfasis en grandes cavidades. Bien, atendiendo al tamaño de las mismas en su desarrollo horizontal o vertical, o de forma parcial, midiendo volúmenes de galerías y conductos, cámaras o espeleotemas, entre otros elementos. Existen exhaustivos rankings de los sistemas de cavidades de mayor longitud total de galerías exploradas, de las salas más grandes, de las cuevas más profundadas o de los espeleotemas más grandes en su tipo. Esto ha condicionando que, por un lado, exista un auge en la investigación de los sistemas endokársticos más grandes del mundo, y por otro, que paisajes superficiales kársticos espectaculares del Planeta hayan pasado a un segundo orden en cuanto a el interés científico o turístico. -

To managereef tourism effectively a greaterunderstanding is neededof reef ecological processesand the impactsthat tourist activities haveon them. This study explores the impact of divers and snorkelerson the reefs of St. Lucia, West Indies, and how the reef environmentaffects tourists' perceptionsand experiencesof them. Observationsof divers and snorkelersrevealed that their impact on the reefs followed certainpatterns and could be predictedfrom individuals', site and dive characteristics.Camera use, night diving and shorediving were correlatedwith higher levels of diver damage.Briefings by dive leadersalone did not reducetourist contactswith the reef but interventiondid. Interviewswith tourists revealedthat many choseto visit St. Lucia becauseof its marineprotected area. Certain site attributes,especially marine life, affectedtourists' experiencesand overall enjoyment of reefs.Tourists were not alwaysable to correctly ascertainabundance of marine life or sedimentpollution but they were sensitiveto, and disliked seeingdamaged coral, poor underwatervisibility, garbageand other tourists damagingthe reef. Moss, Associate Professor, Department of Biological Sciences Abstract Benthic foraminifera that are cemented by calcium carbonate or are otherwise firmly fixed to hard surfaces are known as encrusting or attached foraminifera. Relatively few actualistic studies focus on the use of encrusting foraminifera as paleoenvironmental indicators compared to the vast literature on free foraminifera. However, their sensitivity to environmental factors such as light and water energy and the fact that they are fixed in place and therefore are likely to remain in the original habitat after death makes encrusting foraminifera valuable in paleoecology. Previous research on San Salvador and Cat Island, Bahamas, has created models for the density and occurrence of these encrusting foraminifera on carbonate platforms. The data in this study, which focuses on nearby Mayaguana, are compared to those of the previous experiments done on San Salvador and Cat Island. Cobbles were collected by both SCUBA and snorkeling at seven different sites that ranged from nearshore reefs to shoals to mid-shelf patch reefs and the platform margin. The sites vary considerably across localities regarding the size, density, and relative proportion of encrusting foraminifera. -
