The Free National Movement won seven seats and independents won four seats. The PLP had been out of power since 1992 when the FNM defeated them for the first time since the independence of The Bahamas. They had been in power for 25 years under the leadership of Sir Lynden O. Pindling. They now have won 21 of the 24 Nassau seats, three of the six Grand Bahama seats and five of the seats in the other Family Islands. Two candidates who had previously been cabinet ministers in the FNM government ran independently and won. They were Mr. Pierre Dupuch, former Minister of Agricul- ture and Fisheries, and Mr. Tennyson Well, former Attorney General. Mr. Christie was sworn in on May 3 in a ceremony of pomp and pageantry at Govern- ment House. He pledged to “build a peace- ful, prosperous and just society for all our people.” He is the third prime minister since The Bahamas became an independent coun- try in 1973. Hon. Hubert Marsh Harbour Loses Old House Ingraham, was in Marsh Harbour recently to brief residents on the five referendum ques- tions voted on, February 27, 2002. Chairing the meeting was Mr. Mike Smith, Member of Parliament for the South Beach Constitu- ency. Also bringing remarks was Mr. Rob- ert Sweeting, Member of Parliament for South Abaco. In his remarks Mr. Sweeting stated that he was happy to see the large crowd as this shows the interest of the people in what is going on in the country. Along with the Prime Minister, other speakers included Deputy Leader Designate of the Free Na- tional Movement, Mr. Dion Foulkes, and Member of Parliament Mrs. Janet Bostwick. The meeting was very well attended as people from all walks of life, political per- suasions and settlements throughout Abaco came. In attendance were officials of the BDM (Bahamas Democratic Movement) in- cluding Mr. Omar Smith and Mr. Cassius Stuart. These two became famous only a few weeks ago when they disrupted proceedings in the House of Assembly by attempting to remove the mace from the speaker’s throne. The speakers dissected each proposed amendment, following which the floor was opened for questions. In his speech, the Prime Minister told residents not to be swayed by The Marsh Harbour Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire on February 12 engulfing the old vacated house of Jimmy Wallace in the noise in the market as each proposed the western part of Marsh Harbour.

This region also has experienced the world’s highest levels of historical 17 mammal extinctions, with at least 29 species lost since AD 1500. Representatives of only 2 18 land-mammal families (Capromyidae and Solenodontidae) now survive, in Cuba, Hispaniola, 19 Jamaica, and the Bahama Archipelago. The conservation status of Caribbean land mammals 20 is surprisingly poorly understood. The most recent IUCN Red List assessment, from 2008, 21 recognized 15 endemic species, of which 13 were assessed as threatened. We reassessed all 22 available baseline data on the current status of the Caribbean land-mammal fauna within the 23 framework of the IUCN Red List, to determine specific conservation requirements for 24 Caribbean land-mammal species using an evidence-based approach. We recognize only 13 25 surviving species, 1 of which is not formally described and cannot be assessed using IUCN 26 criteria; 3 further species previously considered valid are interpreted as junior synonyms or 27 subspecies.

That population has flourished, despite the presence of invasive rats, and numbered > 300 individuals by the mid-1990s. We conducted a mark-recapture study of this population from May 2002 through May 2013 to quantify growth, demography, and plasticity in coloration. The iguanas from Bush Hill Cay were shown to reach larger sizes than the source population. Males were larger than females, and mature sizes were reached in approximately four years. Although the sex ratio was balanced in the mid-1990s, it was heavily female-biased throughout our study. Juveniles were rare, presumably due to predation by rats and possibly cannibalism.

    Wilson Bull., 104(2), 1992, pp. 220-243 THE BIRDS OF LONG ISLAND, BAHAMAS DONALD W. BUDEN ’ ABSTRACT.-ChIe hundred and ten species of birds are recorded from Long Island and adjacent cays, 54 for the first time. No species or subspecies is endemic. Of the 48 probable breeding indigenous species, 23 are land birds, most of which are widely distributed in all terrestrial habitats. The Yellow Warbler (Dendroicapetechia) shows the strongest habitat preference, being nearly confined to mangroves. Nests, eggs, and young are reported for 3 1 species, 19 of them for the first time on Long Island. The White-winged Dove (Zenaidu asiatica) and Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (Polioptila caerulea) are new additions to the list of breeding land birds. The Bahama Mockingbird (Mimus gundluchii)was the most frequently encountered bird during summer 1990, followed closely by the Thick-billed Vireo (Vireo crassirostris).Received I6 May 1991, accepted5 Nov. 1991. The avifauna of Long Island has never been reviewed systematically, the literature consisting mainly of brief and sparsely annotated noncu- mulative lists of species. In nearly all cases, these earlier reports have been based on visits of only one to several days duration covering a very limited area, mainly Clarence Town and vicinity. The present report brings together all available information on the distribution of the birds of Long Island and is based in large measure on my observations through- out the island during 28 April-l 3 May and 6 July-l 2 August 1990 together with unpublished records contributed by other observers.     June 15, 2012 The Abaconian Section A Page 1 VOLUME 20 NUMBER 12 JUNE 15th, 2012 Eleven perish in boating tragedy By Timothy Roberts Eleven people, including two chil- dren, perished when a boat heading to Florida developed engine trouble and sank in the area of Hawksbill Cays (just north of Fox Town) sometime close to 9pm on Sunday, June 10. Local police and rescue agencies were not alerted about the sinking until late in the afternoon on Monday as no one had reported it until a young man (a survivor that swam to shore) walked into the police station in Marsh Harbour around 3pm that day. It was reported by the survivor – a nineteen year-old male – that possibly as many as six other people swam to shore but they quickly disappeared into the night. According to Noel Curry, Abaco’s Officer in Charge, the young man attempt- ed to help a young lady swim to shore but she was swept away by a wave. He then fo- cused on getting himself to safety. He told police he swam from 9 pm Sunday evening until 3 am Monday morning.
