ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE 19th ACADEMIA HOMERICA 23-29/30 August 2016 The 19th Academia Homerica will take place from the 23rd to 29th of August 2016, in Athens and on the island of Chios, with a visit to a nearby island. Three programmes will be offered a) Students' Programme b) Scholars’ / Hellenists' Programme c) Modern Greek Programme. All participants are kindly invited to take part in the optional Greek traditional dances session in the afternoon. The programme of visits and some lectures will be common to all. General Information August 23 Arrival of all participants in Athens. Stay at the Titania Hotel , 52 Panepistimiou Str. (between Syntagma and Omonia Square). Dinner. August 24 Visits to archaeological sites and museums in Athens. Departure to Chios by ship in the late afternoon. August 25 Arrival in Chios and check-in at the Boarding House of the Aegean University and hotels. Official opening of the Academia Homerica at the Homerion Cultural Centre. August 25-29 Lessons and lectures in the Homerion, various activities and trips: sightseeing visits to places in Chios town and island, e.g. the archaeological site of Emporio, the Mastic village of Pyrgi, Nea Moni, Volissos (supposed place of Homer’s house), Daskalopetra (where, according to tradition, Homer taught)..., and other trips to a nearby island. August 29 Students’ Presentations Closing of the congress. Departure for the Piraeus by ship in the evening. August 30 Arrival at the Piraeus in the early morning and return to town by bus. (N.B. Tis report reviews the European, National, and Regional catalogues of protected species, focusing specifcally on the Orchidaceae family to determine which species seem to be well-protected and where they are protected. Moreover, this examination highlights which species appear to be underprotected and therefore need to be included in some catalogues of protection or be catalogued under some category of protection. Te national and regional catalogues that should be implemented are shown, as well as what species should be included within them. Tis report should be a helpful guideline for environmental policies about orchids conservation in Spain, at least at the regional and national level. Around 76% of the Spanish orchid fora are listed with any fgure of protection or included in any red list, either nationally (about 12-17%) or regionally (72%). -

Walsonia , 14, 79-100 (\982) 79 Book Reviews Flowers of Greece and the Balkans. A field guide. Oleg Polunin. Pp. xv+592 including 62 pages of line drawings and 21 maps, with 80 colour plates. Oxford University Press, Oxford. 1980. Price £40.00 (ISBN 0-19- 217-6269). This latest of Oleg Polunin's Field guides to the European flora presents a concise, but by no means superficial, picture of the flowering plants and conifers of the Balkan peninsula. The area that is covers takes in the whole of Greece (including the East Aegean Islands, excluded from Flora Europaea), Turkey-in-Europe, Albania, Bulgaria, Jugoslavia as far north as the River Sava, and the small portion of Romania that lies south and east of the River Danube. The author has condensed his account of the rich and varied flora of the region, together with the associated mass of published material, into a form that is attractive, comprehensible and useful to the amateur botanist. A book of this type has been badly needed, as the available floristic texts on the Balkans tend to be over 50 years old, scarce, extremely expensive and written in a foreign language, often Latin. However, the most significant attribute of this book is not that it gives access to diffuse and obscure information, but that it provides a radical alternative to popular botanical accounts of Greece which emphasize the lowland spring flora, notably the orchids and other petaloid monocots. Based on the author's many years of botanical experience and extensive travel in the region, Flowers of Greece and the Balkans demonstrates the wide range of flora and vegetation that the amateur botanist can expect to see in the Balkan peninsula. -

CALL FOR INTERNS at the Chios Institute for Mediterranean Affairs The Mediterranean is a lake. It does not separate nations, it connects peoples. The Chios Institute for Mediterranean Affairs is looking for up to 10 interns starting from the summer of 2010. We therefore invite B.A. and M.A. students who are dedicated to our goals and who share our passion for the Mediterranean region to submit their application. Who are we? The Chios Institute for Mediterranean Affairs is a young and innovative non‐ governmental, not‐for‐profit organisation which works as a meeting point for civil society actors, businessmen and researchers throughout the Mediterranean. To this aim, CIMA... ¾ functions as a Euro‐Mediterranean agora, where regional issues of common interest can be debated; ¾ fosters cultural exchanges and dialogue between civil societies throughout the Mediterranean through its EuroMed Forum; ¾ spreads information about regional economic opportunities, attract investments and economic activities at the local level; ¾ promotes sustainable tourism and environmental awareness; ¾ takes part in the ongoing reflection on the Euro‐Mediterranean Partnership through a series of academic publications; ¾ organises education and training events (summer schools). Who are we looking for? We are looking for talented and committed interns from a broad variety of academic disciplines: Geography, Political Science, International Relations, Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Linguistics, Law, Development Studies, Journalism, Media and Communication, Multimedia Web Design. However, we do not select interns on the basis of the courses they attended. Your previous professional experiences, your hobbies and interests, your personal and linguistic skills, your motivation and commitment to CIMA’s goals and your willingness to be part of an international and intercultural team are what we are really looking for. -
Rare Plant Monitoring 2017
RARE PLANT MONITORING 2017 Ajuga pyramidalis Ophrys insectifera © Zoe Devlin What is it? In 2017, we decided to carry out a small pilot scheme on rare plant monitoring. Where experienced plant recorders had submitted recent casual records of rare plants to the Centre, they were asked if they would be willing to visit their rare plant population once a year during its flowering period and to count the total number of individuals present. The response to the scheme from the small number of recorders contacted has been overwhelming positive and it has resulted in very valuable data being collected in 2017. Data on the rare plant location, the count and additional information about the site is submitted online through a dedicated web portal set up by the Data Centre. The project was discussed and agreed with the NPWS. It is framed around the 2016 Vascular Plant Red List and is mainly focused on monitoring vulnerable, near threatened and rare least concern species. Why is it important? When assessing the national FAST FACTS 2017 conservation status of very rare species according to IUCN Red List methodology, it is recommended that 37 you use annual population count data. We evaluated the research using phytogeographic analysis with an emphasis on selected ecological environmental factors (substrate: ecological land unit value, soil reaction (pH), terrain: slope (◦), flow and hydrogeological productivity (m2.s−1) and average annual amounts of global radiation (kWh.m–2). A total of 19 species were found in the area, of which the majority were Cephalenthera longifolia, Cephalenthera damasonium and Anacamptis morio. Rare findings included Epipactis muelleri, Epipactis leptochila and Limodorum abortivum. We determined the ecological demands of the abiotic environment of individual species by means of a functional analysis of communities. The research confirmed that most of the orchids that were studied occurred in acidified, calcified and basophil locations. From the location of the distribution of individual populations, it is clear that they are generally arranged compactly and occasionally scattered, which results in ecological and environmental diversity. The Dactylorhiza of Occitania was described in 1995 from the department of Hérault (Southern France) as Dactylorhiza occitanica.As it seems better to consider it as a variety of D. elata, D. elata var. ambigua (MARTRIN-DONOS) SOÓ 1962, based on Orchis ambigua MARTRIN-DONOS 1864, described from department of Tarn, bordering Hérault, was used to name it. Unfortunately Orchis ambigua MARTRIN-DONOS 1864 is a nom. illegit., non Orchis ambigua DEGLAND ex LE GALL 1852, and so D. elata var. ambigua (MARTRIN-DONOS) SOÓ is illegitimate too. No possibility seems avail- able to use the epithet ambigua at the varietal rank in accordance with article 58.1 of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. Furthermore, Orchis ambigua MARTRIN-DONOS nom. illegit. does not fit exactly the Dactylorhiza of Occitanie. As a result, the combination D. elata var. occitanica is made. The woodlands are amongst the most diverse and species-rich of their type while the grasslands typify the unimproved calcareous pastures for which the area is famous. The woods are structurally varied, including blocks of high forest and some areas of remnant beech coppice. The canopy is dominated by beech Fagus sylvatica, with ash Fraxinus excelsior, pedunculate oak Quercus robur and some areas of sycamore Acer pseudoplatanus. Characteristic understorey species include holly Ilex aquifolium and yew Taxus baccata but regenerating ash, sycamore and beech often accounts for much of the shrub layer. The field layer consists mainly of bramble Rubus fruticosus agg., dog’s mercury Mercurialis perennis and ivy Hedera helix. Rare plants include red helleborine Cephalanthera rubra, stinking hellebore Helleborus foetidus, narrow-lipped helleborine Epipactis leptochila and wood barley Hordelymus europaeus. The fauna of the woods includes an exceptional variety of invertebrate species, including a rich mollusc fauna. The unimproved limestone grassland swards are generally dominated by upright brome Bromopsis erecta, tor-grass Brachypodium pinnatum and sheep’s-fescue Festuca ovina, with quaking grass Briza media and a wide range of other flowering herbs. -

The original book is A5-format, with 168 pages. Some changes have been made as follows: NOMENCLATURE has been updated, with the name used in the 1988 edition in brackets. Irish Names and family names have also been added. STATUS: There have been three Flora Protection Orders (1980, 1987, 1999) to date. If a species is currently protected (i.e. 1999) this is stated as PROTECTED, if it was previously protected, the year(s) of the relevant orders are given. IUCN categories have been updated as follows: EN to CR, V to EN, R to V. The original (1988) rating is given in brackets thus: “CR (EN)”. This takes account of the fact that a rare plant is not necessarily threatened. The European IUCN rating was given in the original book, here it is changed to the UK IUCN category as given in the 2005 Red Data Book listing. MAPS and APPENDIX have not been reproduced here.
