plants Article Phytogeographical Analysis and Ecological Factors of the Distribution of Orchidaceae Taxa in the Western Carpathians (Local study) Lukáš Wittlinger and Lucia Petrikoviˇcová * Department of Geography and Regional Development, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, 94974 Nitra, Slovakia; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +421-907-3441-04 Abstract: In the years 2018–2020, we carried out large-scale mapping in the Western Carpathians with a focus on determining the biodiversity of taxa of the family Orchidaceae using field biogeographical research. We evaluated the research using phytogeographic analysis with an emphasis on selected ecological environmental factors (substrate: ecological land unit value, soil reaction (pH), terrain: slope (◦), flow and hydrogeological productivity (m2.s−1) and average annual amounts of global radiation (kWh.m–2). A total of 19 species were found in the area, of which the majority were Cephalenthera longifolia, Cephalenthera damasonium and Anacamptis morio. Rare findings included Epipactis muelleri, Epipactis leptochila and Limodorum abortivum. We determined the ecological demands of the abiotic environment of individual species by means of a functional analysis of communities. The research confirmed that most of the orchids that were studied occurred in acidified, calcified and basophil locations. From the location of the distribution of individual populations, it is clear that they are generally arranged compactly and occasionally scattered, which results in ecological and environmental diversity. We identify the main factors that threaten them and propose Ecological Factors of the Distribution specific measures to protect vulnerable populations. -

It currently totals 764 hectares (1887 acres), of which the designated National Nature Reserve is 255 ha and this includes the 163 ha of the core fen habitat on deeper peats that have not been drained for agriculture. The land area of the reserve has increased by more than 2.5-fold since the early 1990s, with the purchase by the Trust of several areas of land which is in the process of restoration to create a much larger nature reserve for wildlife and people. The very rare Fen Violet was re-discovered in May 2014, at the very location on Verrall’s Fen at Wicken where it was last seen in 1999 (photo Pete Stroh). 1 Introduction Welcome to the latest annual edition of the Wicken Fen Wildlife Newsletter. Ashmolean Natural History Society of Oxfordshire Rare Plants Group 2007 Newsletter Fen Violet, Viola persicifolia Note the mite waiting for a pollinating insect Photo: Phil Cutt INTRODUCTION Many of “our” species did well in 2007; Green Hound’s-tongue reappeared, just, at its Cotswold site; while Pasqueflower flourished on the chalk downland. Ploughing of the Wild Celery field has produced a record showing of this mainly coastal biennial. One of the young reinforcement plants of True Fox-sedge at BBOWT’s Asham Meads reserve even flowered. However, the little newly-planted Meadow Clary plants at Ardley were dug up by rabbits, and left to die. Fen Violet kept its numbers up, thanks to the dedicated farmer, the MoD warden and energetic volunteers from the neighbouring RSPB reserve. Preliminary research indicates that Fen Violet is producing lots of seed. Most pleasing of all John Killick found a new county record while working on the Rare Plants Register (see page 8). The spring and summer floods had dramatic effects on some species – Grass Poly, a charming magenta-flowered annual of flooded field corners, had a huge showing, after having been absent last year. Creeping Marshwort seemed to survive the floods – the plants at North Hinksey were under water for weeks in July and August, but went on to flower. We found Cuckoo-flower trying to beat the floods with little plantlets along the midribs of the leaves. Viviparous plantlets on the leaves of Cuckoo-flower, Cardamine pratensis, on Binsey Green; this is a known phenomenon but we think this maybe a response to the heavy summer flooding of 2007. -

The woodlands are amongst the most diverse and species-rich of their type while the grasslands typify the unimproved calcareous pastures for which the area is famous. The woods are structurally varied, including blocks of high forest and some areas of remnant beech coppice. The canopy is dominated by beech Fagus sylvatica, with ash Fraxinus excelsior, pedunculate oak Quercus robur and some areas of sycamore Acer pseudoplatanus. Characteristic understorey species include holly Ilex aquifolium and yew Taxus baccata but regenerating ash, sycamore and beech often accounts for much of the shrub layer. The field layer consists mainly of bramble Rubus fruticosus agg., dog’s mercury Mercurialis perennis and ivy Hedera helix. Rare plants include red helleborine Cephalanthera rubra, stinking hellebore Helleborus foetidus, narrow-lipped helleborine Epipactis leptochila and wood barley Hordelymus europaeus. The fauna of the woods includes an exceptional variety of invertebrate species, including a rich mollusc fauna. The unimproved limestone grassland swards are generally dominated by upright brome Bromopsis erecta, tor-grass Brachypodium pinnatum and sheep’s-fescue Festuca ovina, with quaking grass Briza media and a wide range of other flowering herbs. -

The original book is A5-format, with 168 pages. Some changes have been made as follows: NOMENCLATURE has been updated, with the name used in the 1988 edition in brackets. Irish Names and family names have also been added. STATUS: There have been three Flora Protection Orders (1980, 1987, 1999) to date. If a species is currently protected (i.e. 1999) this is stated as PROTECTED, if it was previously protected, the year(s) of the relevant orders are given. IUCN categories have been updated as follows: EN to CR, V to EN, R to V. The original (1988) rating is given in brackets thus: “CR (EN)”. This takes account of the fact that a rare plant is not necessarily threatened. The European IUCN rating was given in the original book, here it is changed to the UK IUCN category as given in the 2005 Red Data Book listing. MAPS and APPENDIX have not been reproduced here. Orchids of Crete and Attica GREECE, A SMALL country on the southeast end of Europe, is well known for its spring fl ora, especially to orchid lovers, as it harbors about 227 species of orchids, of which 74 are endemic. Granted, for the general public that fl ocks to Greece and its islands for the wonderful beaches, orchids may not be the fi rst thing that comes to mind, but the devoti on these plants (especially the genus Ophrys) seem to inspire, in both botanical and hobbyist circles, is worth a closer look. Our trip was organized by the Orchid Conservati on Alliance (OCA), a nonprofi t conservati on organizati on that regularly takes members on orchid-related trips. We concentrated on western Crete, beginning our odyssey at Chania, and later moving our base to the seaside village of Plakias, with a few days at the end of the trip on the mainland to see some archaeological sites and more orchids! Crete is a microcosm in itself, being a large and self-sufficient island on the southernmost part of Greece. The landscape is dominated by the snow- capped White Mountains, visible from the city of Chania. Bound by the Aegean Sea on its northern shores, and the Libyan Sea on its southern, its flora shows the influences of both east and west, north and south! Fifteen of the 70 or so species of orchids on the island are found nowhere else. -

Morphometric comparison of the two largest and best-known populations in 29 southern England – the coastal dune population at Sandwich and the chalk grassland 30 population at Newmarket – using 46 characters showed that they differ only subtly, the 31 Sandwich plants being on average more vegetatively robust and slightly more darkly 32 pigmented, but possessing less extensive lip-spots and substantially longer ‘arms’. -

Abstract: Plant-pollinator interactions significantly influence reproductive success (RS) and drive the evolution of pollination syndromes. In the context of RS, mainly the role of flower morphology is touched. The importance of nectar properties is less studied, despite its significance in pollination effectiveness. Therefore, the aim of this study was to test selection on flower morphology and nectar chemistry in the generalistic orchid Neottia ovata. In 2019–2020, we measured three floral displays and six flower traits, pollinaria removal (PR), female reproductive success (FRS), and determined the soil properties. The sugars and amino acids (AAs) were analyzed using the HPLC method. Based on natural selection, mutation and genetic drift, speciation occurs simultaneously in organisms linking them in complexes webs called ecosystems. Clarify what a species is, it is the first step to understand the biology of orchids and start protection actions especially in a fast changing world due to human impact such as habitats fragmentation and climate changes. I use the biological species concept (BSC) to investigate the presence and eventually the strength of mechanisms that limit the gene flow between close related taxa. -
