Regulating Word Order in Modern Greek: Verb Initial and Non-Verb Initial Orders & the Conceptual-Intentional Interface
Regulating Word Order in Modern Greek: Verb Initial and non-Verb Initial orders & the Conceptual-Intentional Interface Thesis submitted to University College London in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Axiotis Kechagias Research Department of Linguistics University College London 2011 1 I, Axiotis Kechagias, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 To my family 3 ABSTRACT After I introduce the notions ‘configurational’, ‘discourse-configurational’, and the basics of the minimalist syntax, on the one hand, and notions relevant to information packaging, on the other hand (Chapter 1), in the following thee chapters I proceed to a detailed examination of the syntactic properties of verb-initial and non-verb initial orders, insisting on certain debated aspects. In particular, in Chapter 2, I compare the syntax of VSO and that of the ‘problematic’ VOS order; I show that what differentiates the two constructions is that the latter order is due to a flexible strategy in the narrow syntax that allows the object to pied-pipe alongside the verb to the TP domain. In Chapter 3, I discuss clitic doubling for which I put forward an alternative account involving feature copying that allows the same DP to occur in two positions in the structure at the same time. In this light, I further argue that clitic doubling is a parameterized version of A-movement. In Chapter 4, I deal with the properties of a range of constructions targeting the preverbal domain. -

Aspects of Comparative Constructions Comparative Syntax, Semantics & L1-Acquisition
Aspects of Comparative Constructions Comparative Syntax, Semantics & L1-acquisition Maria-Margarita Makri, MPhil, MA (Res) PhD University of York Language and Linguistic Science June 2018 Abstract This thesis examines the crosslinguistic variation and acquisition of comparative constructions and proposes a fine-grained AP periphery along with an analysis of comparatives as constructions involv- ing subtraction. More specifically, it is proposed that gradable predicates incorporate a Q0 and that comparative morphology is realised in two distinct heads above Q0: the higher C0 assigns case to the differential argument whereas the lower one, which is immediately above Q0 checks the case of the standard phrase. Furthermore, I provide novel evidence for two types of comparative markers, a ‘functional’ one, which is the realisation of C20 if the gradable predicate does not move to C20, and a ‘lexical’ one, which is the comparative form of the quantity word that adjoins to a positive ad- jective. This analysis explains morphological facts as well as variation in case assignment in Greek varieties. As far as standard phrases are concerned I propose that there are three distinct types of stan- dard phrases: adjunct standard phrases introduced by the phrasal standard marker, argument standard phrases comprised of the phrasal standard marker and a nominal (DP or relative clause) and excep- tive phrases. Furthermore, the study of the distribution of polarity items and comparative negation in Romance comparatives as well as the acquisition of Italian comparatives suggest that negation found in comparatives is an overt realisation of the negative operator. This analysis explains a (universal) gap in the distribution of comparative negation, namely the unavailability of languages that license comparative negation but not polarity items. -
Women, State Oppression and Political Violence in Post-War Greece (1946-1974)
Engendering the Nation: Women, state oppression and political violence in post-war Greece (1946-1974) Katherine Stefatos Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Politics Department, Goldsmiths College University of London 1 I, Katherine Stefatos, declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own. 2 To my family, my parents Mary and Yiannis Stefatos, my sister Lela and my grandmother Katerina Antonelli to my partner Dimitris C. Papadopoulos, with all my love and gratitude In loving memory of my grandparents Lela and Vassilis Stefatos and Prokopis Antonellis 3 Engendering the Nation: Women, state oppression and political violence in post-war Greece (1946-1974) Abstract The PhD thesis: Engendering the Nation: Women, state oppression and political violence in post-war Greece (1946-1974), addresses the gendered characteristics of political violence during the 1946-1974 period in Greece. The phenomenon of political violence and state oppression against politically active women is analysed through the prism of nationalist ideology, both as a legitimising mechanism for the continuation of abuse and terrorisation, but also as a vehicle for re-appropriating gender roles, power hierarchies, sexual stereotypes and social norms. Research focuses on (1) the gender-specific ways women were persecuted, incarcerated and abused and the causes of this gender-based violence; (2) the ways in which the nationalist, official discourse made use of gender characteristics in order to enact this type of abuse and oppression. Accordingly, the phenomenon of political violence against women dissidents is examined through the main analytical categories of gender and nationalism. This thesis provides a history and analysis of political violence against women in the Greek Civil War (1946-1949), the period of weak democracy (1950-1967) and the military dictatorship (1967-1974), respectively. -
