Orthodoxy and Heresy in Earliest Christianity
ORTHODOXY AND HERESY IN EARLIEST CHRISTIANITY by Walter Bauer 1934 [Second German Edition by Georg Strecker] OPINIONS Walter Bauer’s Orthodoxy and Heresy has established itself as a classic refutation of the "myth" that "in the beginning" orthodoxy was there first and heresy was a deviation from the norm. Whatever one thinks of the thesis, one cannot bypass Bauer on early heresy any more that one can bypass Bultmann on Form Criticism or Harnack on the development of dogma. Today, it remains a good introduction to Christianity at the end of the first century and the beginning of the second century. Gerald Christianson Professor of Church History Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary This brilliant and pioneering monograph inaugurated a new era of scholarship in the study of the New Testament and Christian origins, especially in America. It argued that early Christianity did not begin with a unified orthodox belief, from which heresies broke off at a later time. Rather, Bauer demonstrated that diversity stood at the beginning, while an orthodox church emerged only after long controversies during the early centuries. During recent decades, the investigation of newly discovered texts, such as the Gnostic Library of Nag Hammadi in Egypt, have fully confirmed Bauer’s insights. There may be numerous details, which scholars today would see differently than Walter Bauer, whose word was first published in Germany sixty years ago. Nevertheless, Bauer’s book has remained the foundation for all modern scholarship in this field, and it is must- reading for all who want to explore early Christian Communities. It is still challenging, fresh, fascinating, and thought-provoking -- without any question of the truly great masterpieces of New Testament scholarship. -

Introducion Summary
THE SACRED DOMAIN: A SEMIOTIC AND COGNITIVE ANALYSIS OF RELIGION AND MAGIC IN THE ANCIENT MEDITERRANEAN WORLD DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Adria Haluszka, M. A. Graduate Program in Greek and Latin The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Professor Sarah Iles Johnston, Advisor Professor Fritz Graf Professor Carolina López-Ruiz Copyright by Adria Haluszka 2010 ABSTRACT Throughout the corpus of texts scholars have decided to call the Greek Magical Papyri (PGM), most simply defined as a ―recipe-book‖ for ancient magicians, there are many spells describing the manufacture and use of sacred images that, by the end of the ritual actions incorporated throughout the spell, become invested with essences and traits that are not necessarily ontologically apparent or natural. For example, there are statues invested with social agency that can perform all manner of fantastical feats. There are engraved rings that are ritually invested with great powers and come to be specifically described in terms of adjectives such as ―beneficent,‖ ― merciful,‖ ―sexually pleasing,‖ and so forth. This dissertation takes a close look at the specific ritual actions that allow for objects in the profane world – such as clay or stone, for example – being ascribed these kinds of powers and abilities. For this purpose, I use cognitive and semiotic frameworks to draw out deeper meanings, analyses, and typologies of ritual action. I use the PGM as my primary source, although part of the semiotic theory that I incorporate also involves looking at how these images fit into a wider conception of the portrayal of divine interaction in literature and iconography in the ancient world. -
THE DEVELOPMENT of JEWISH IDEAS of ANGELS: EGYPTIAN and HELLENISTIC CONNECTIONS Ca
THE DEVELOPMENT OF JEWISH IDEAS OF ANGELS: EGYPTIAN AND HELLENISTIC CONNECTIONS ca. 600 BCE TO ca. 200 CE. Annette Henrietta Margaretha Evans Dissertation Presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Stellenbosch Promotor: Prof. J. Cook Co-promotor: Prof. J. C. Thom March 2007 DECLARATION I, the undersigned, declare that the work contained in this dissertation is my own original work and has not previously in its entirety or in part been submitted at any university for a degree. Signature Date (Annette Henrietta Margaretha Evans) i ABSTRACT This dissertation sets out to test the hypothesis that Egyptian and Hellenistic connections to Jewish beliefs about the functioning of angels facilitated the reception of Christianity. The method of investigation involved a close reading, combined with a History of Religions methodology, of certain texts with marked angelological content. The presence of certain motifs, especially “throne” and “sun/fire”, which were identified as characteristic of angelic functioning, were compared across the entire spectrum of texts. In this way the diachronic development of major angelological motifs became apparent, and the synchronic connections between the respective cultural contexts became noticeable. The course the research followed is reflected in the list of Contents. Ancient Egyptian myth and ritual associated with solar worship, together with Divine Council imagery, provides a pattern of mediation between heaven and earth via two crucial religious concepts which underly Jewish beliefs about the functioning of angels: 1) the concept of a supreme God as the king of the Gods as reflected in Divine Council imagery, and 2) the unique Egyptian institution of the king as the divine son of god (also related to the supremacy of the sun god). -

Women, State Oppression and Political Violence in Post-War Greece (1946-1974)
Engendering the Nation: Women, state oppression and political violence in post-war Greece (1946-1974) Katherine Stefatos Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Politics Department, Goldsmiths College University of London 1 I, Katherine Stefatos, declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own. 2 To my family, my parents Mary and Yiannis Stefatos, my sister Lela and my grandmother Katerina Antonelli to my partner Dimitris C. Papadopoulos, with all my love and gratitude In loving memory of my grandparents Lela and Vassilis Stefatos and Prokopis Antonellis 3 Engendering the Nation: Women, state oppression and political violence in post-war Greece (1946-1974) Abstract The PhD thesis: Engendering the Nation: Women, state oppression and political violence in post-war Greece (1946-1974), addresses the gendered characteristics of political violence during the 1946-1974 period in Greece. The phenomenon of political violence and state oppression against politically active women is analysed through the prism of nationalist ideology, both as a legitimising mechanism for the continuation of abuse and terrorisation, but also as a vehicle for re-appropriating gender roles, power hierarchies, sexual stereotypes and social norms. Research focuses on (1) the gender-specific ways women were persecuted, incarcerated and abused and the causes of this gender-based violence; (2) the ways in which the nationalist, official discourse made use of gender characteristics in order to enact this type of abuse and oppression. Accordingly, the phenomenon of political violence against women dissidents is examined through the main analytical categories of gender and nationalism. This thesis provides a history and analysis of political violence against women in the Greek Civil War (1946-1949), the period of weak democracy (1950-1967) and the military dictatorship (1967-1974), respectively. -
Nitro's Infield Adventures and Lay Reports
2 Who is Nitro?
