Tylko tacy kapłani zasłużą sobie na nazwę prawdziwych pionierów polskości i katolicyzmu na odzyskanych terenach, a imiona ich zapisane będą po wieczne czasy w pamięci i sercach potomności, przede wszystkim zaś w Księdze Żywota. Eaton 1 Abstract Exclave: Politics, Ideology, and Everyday Life in Königsberg-Kaliningrad, 1928-1948 by Nicole M. Eaton Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Yuri Slezkine, Chair “Exclave: Politics, Ideology, and Everyday Life in Königsberg-Kaliningrad, 1928-1948,” looks at the history of one city in both Hitler’s Germany and Stalin’s Soviet Russia, follow- ing the transformation of Königsberg from an East Prussian city into a Nazi German city, its destruction in the war, and its postwar rebirth as the Soviet Russian city of Kaliningrad. The city is peculiar in the history of Europe as a double exclave, first separated from Germany by the Polish Corridor, later separated from the mainland of Soviet Russia. The dissertation analyzes the ways in which each regime tried to transform the city and its inhabitants, fo- cusing on Nazi and Soviet attempts to reconfigure urban space (the physical and symbolic landscape of the city, its public areas, markets, streets, and buildings); refashion the body (through work, leisure, nutrition, and healthcare); and reconstitute the mind (through vari- ous forms of education and propaganda).

Mai 2003 wurde am größten Wallfahrtsort des Erzbistums Paderborn, in Werl (Nordrhein-Westfalen), der Seligsprechungsprozess für Bischof Maximilian Kaller eröffnet. Der erste Vertriebenenbischof nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg starb am 7. Juli 1947. Seine letzte Ruhestätte fand Kaller in Königstein im Taunus, dem Sitz der internationalen Zentrale von KIRCHE IN NOT. An der Eröffnung des Seligsprechungsprozesses nahmen auch der Kölner Kardinal Joachim Meisner und der polnische Erzbischof von Ermland, Edmund Piszcz, teil. Polens Primas Kardinal Jozef Glemp betonte in einer Grußbotschaft, Kaller habe vorbildlich in Treue zu seiner Berufung und im Rufe der Heiligkeit gestanden. Kardinal Meisner würdigte Kaller als einen Bischof, der sich für alle Heimatvertriebenen verzehrt habe. Das Verfahren zur Seligsprechung führen der Visitator Prälat Dr. Lothar Schlegel und der Bischof von Münster, Dr. Reinhard Lettmann. In Münster befindet sich das so genannte „Ermlandhaus“. Hier hat der Visitator für die Katholiken dem Bistum Ermland seinen Sitz, dessen letzter deutscher Bischof Kaller war. Unterstützt wird der Prozess auch von der heute polnischen Erzdiözese Ermland mit Sitz in Allenstein (Olsztyn), wo Kaller in hohem Ansehen steht. Der Visitator für die Ermländer in Deutschland ist auch Domherr in Allenstein. In Königstein im Taunus ist nach Bischof Maximilian Kaller eine Straße benannt. Hinter der Pfarrkirche St. Marien befindet sich sein Grab. Wer kennt aber noch das Leben dieses Mannes, dessen Grab als letzter Ruheort eines Seligen und Heiligen vielleicht bald eine Pilgerstätte sein wird? Few priests or religious educators feel confident to answer a rather straightforward question that many people have: What exactly is an indulgence? In fact, if they have a sense of church history, these same religious leaders may also feel embarrassment when indulgences are brought up. Weren’t they, after all, a commercialized spiritual transaction that led to the Protestant Reformation? And yet Pope Francis, a beloved and trusted religious leader, has linked a plenary indulgence with observances in the course of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. His authority fuels the interest in indulgences, even as many pastoral leaders would perhaps rather let the matter go. In these reflections, I will propose an understanding of indulgences that situate them in God’s mercy and our graced and free responsibility before that mercy. Furthermore, I suggest that understanding the theological background of indulgences can and ought to generate hope in the hearts of believers. Before we arrive at these conclusions, however, we need to untangle the strands of doctrine and practice surrounding indulgences. Christ himself is at work in the liturgy, so that the action of the Church, which is the Body of Christ, participates in the saving act of Christ as priest. 1 Precisely because every liturgical celebration "is an action of Christ the priest and of His Body which is the Church," no other form of worship can take its place: a liturgical celebration "is a sacred action surpassing all others; no other action of the Church can equal its efficacy by the same title and to the same degree." 2 While the liturgy is "the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed" and "the font from which all her power flows," 3 it is not possible for us to fill up all of our day with participation in the liturgy. Q An indulgence is the remission in the eyes of God of the temporal punish - ment due to sins which have already been forgiven by faith in Christ’s redemptive death, repentance and (when necessary) sacramental absolution. Because Christ has established the Church as the means by which the Gospel is to be preached, He has also granted to the Church all the ministries proper to redemption, including the right to distribute authoritatively and apply effec - tively the treasury of expiatory works of Christ, Our Lady, and all the saints. (Apostolic Constitution Indulgentiarum doctrina , norm. 1) Why is there temporal punishment if our sins have already Q been forgiven? Sin is both an offense against God and a rupture of the relationship we enjoy with God through Baptism. Even when the offense is forgiven, the damage done to the relationship must still be repaired - as it would have to be in any relationship! When a child has a tantrum and breaks a window, even though his parents forgive him when he or she shows contrition and has a purpose of amendment, the window must still be repaired and the previous level of trust restored. The child may also be punished if that is necessary to teach the child the gravity of his misbehavior and thus redirect him or her away from such outbursts. What we call the ‘temporal punishment’ due to our sin, then, is the need to repair the damage done by sin. The sinner must come to learn the gravity of his offense and through prayer and penance purify his attach - ments so that he is no longer attracted to sin.
