Looking only at the number of regular attendees,1 the estimated membership for all Eastern Orthodox Churches was 183,020 versus 171,045 for all Oriental Orthodox Churches. Between 2010 and 2020, Eastern Orthodox Churches have suffered significant membership losses: they declined by 17% in total adherents and by 14% in regular attendees. In stark contrast, Oriental Orthodox Churches have grown substantially in both total adherents (+67%) and regular attendees (+59%). However, these overall trends in membership were more nuanced when looking at individual Church bodies. This report examines and presents the 2010‐2020 membership changes in fourteen Eastern and nine Oriental Orthodox Churches. -

Living to Tell The Tale-The Knanaya Christians of Kerala Maria Ann Mathew , Department of Sociology, Delhi School of Economics. LIVING TO TELL THE TALE- THE KNANAYA CHRISTIANS OF KERALA In the first week of August, Kottayam town witnessed a protest rally by approximately 600 former members of the Knanaya Christians. The rally vouched for the restoration of the erstwhile Knanaya identity of the participants, who by way of marrying outside the Knanaya circle, got ex- communicated from the community. What is it about the Knanaya Community that people who have been ousted from it, refuse to part with their Knanaya identity? Who can give them their Knanaya Identity back? What is the nature of this identity? Belonging to a Jewish-Christian Ancestry, the Knanaya Christians of Kerala are believed to have reached the port of Kodungaloor (Kerala), in 345 CE, under the leadership of Thomas of Cana. This group, also known as ‘Thekkumbaggar’ (Southists) claims to have been practising strict endogamy since the time of their arrival. ‘Thekkumbaggar’ has been opposed to the ‘Vadakkumbaggar’ (Northists) who were the native Christians of that time, for whose ecclestiacal and spiritual uplift, it is believed that the Knanayas migrated from South Mesopotamia. However, the Southists did not involve in marriage relations with the Northists. The Knanaya Christians today, number up to around 2,50,000 people. Within the Knanaya Christians, there are two groups that follow different churches-one follows the Catholic rite and the other , the Jacobite rite. This division dates back to the Coonen Kurush Satyam of 1653, when the Syrian Christians of Kerala, revolted against the Portuguese efforts to bring the Syrian Christians under the Catholic rite. -

The nature and importance of the Catholic marriage ceremony is best understood in the light of historicalantecedents. With such a perspective, the canon law is not likely to seem arbitrary. HISTORICAL NOTES ON THE CANON LAW ON SOLEMNIZED MARRIAGE WILLIAM F. CAHILL, B.A., J.C.D.* T HE law of the Catholic Church requires, under pain of nullity, that the marriages of Catholics shall be celebrated in the presence of the parties, of an authorized priest and of two witnesses.1 That law is the product of an historical development. The present legislation con- sidered apart from its historical antecedents can be made to seem arbitrary. Indeed, if the historical background is misconceived, the 2 present law may be seen as tyrannical. This essay briefly states the correlation between the present canons and their antecedents in history. For clarity, historical notes are not put in one place, but follow each of the four headings under which the present Church discipline is described. -

By "going deep" we find our Christian vocation and mission especially in having a personal relationshion with the living Christ. When Peter and his companions acted according to the command of the Lord, they had a miraculous catch (Lk. 5:6). In the same way, our Seminarians strive to develop a deeper relationship with Jesus in everything we do, we are, and we are called to be. In many areas of life, especially in our discipleship, we can work so hard and seem to have so little to show for it. -

(CNS/Chris Helgren) Rome -- When Pope Benedict XVI used the word "infallible" in reference to the ban on women's ordination in a recent letter informing an Australian bishop he'd been sacked, it marked the latest chapter of a long-simmering debate in Catholicism: Exactly where should the boundaries of infallible teaching be drawn? On one side are critics of "creeping infallibility," meaning a steady expansion of the set of church teachings that lie beyond debate. On the other are those, including Benedict, worried about "theological positivism," meaning that there is such a sharp emphasis on formal declarations of infallibility that all other teachings, no matter how constantly or emphatically they've been defined, seem up for grabs. That tension defines the fault lines in many areas of Catholic life, and it also forms part of the background to the recent Australian drama centering on Bishop William Morris of the Toowoomba diocese. Morris was removed from office May 2, apparently on the basis of a 2006 pastoral letter in which he suggested that, in the face of the priest shortage, the church may have to be open to the ordination of women, among other options. Morris has revealed portions of a letter from Benedict informing him of the action, in which the pope says Pope John Paul II defined the teaching on women priests "irrevocably and infallibly." In comments to the Australian media, Morris said that turn of phrase has him concerned about "creeping infallibility." Speaking on background, a Vatican official said this week that the Vatican never comments on the pope's correspondence but has "no reason to doubt" the authenticity of the letter. -

THE LONG WAY TO A COMMON EASTER DATE A CATHOLIC AND ECUMENICAL PERSPECTIVE BERT GROEN* 1. INTRODUCTION ‘The feast of feasts, the new drink, the famous and holy day…’ With these words and in other poetic language, St. John of Damascus (ca. 650 - before 754) extols Easter in the paschal canon attributed to him.1 The liturgical calendars of both Eastern and Western Christianity commemorate this noted Eastern theologian on December 4. Of course, not only on Easter, but in any celebration of the Eucharist, the paschal mystery is being commemo- rated. The Eucharist is the nucleus of Christian worship. Preferably on the Lord’s Day, the first day of the week, Christians assemble to hear and expe- rience the biblical words of liberation and reconciliation, to partake of the bread and cup of life which have been transformed by the Holy Spirit, to celebrate the body of Christ and to become this body themselves. Hearing and doing the word of God, ritually sharing His gifts and becoming a faith- ful Eucharistic community make the Church spiritually grow. Yet, it is the Easter festival, the feast of the crucified and resurrected Christ par excellence, in which all of this is densely and intensely celebrated. The first Christians were Jews who believed that in Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah had come.
