Conference Description:

The M.A. program in International Peace and Conflict Resolution at Arcadia University and the Peace Center invite interested persons to participate in the upcoming peace conference, “Engaging Peace.” The theme of this conference, "Engaging Peace," is designed to showcase and celebrate a broad spectrum of innovative approaches and ideas in peacebuilding and conflict resolution, both domestically and abroad. The conference fosters an interdisciplinary forum for connecting academics, students and practitioners through a dialectic learning and mentoring environment. The conference will consist of student research presentations, workshops, guest speakers and practitioner sessions.

Registration:

Registration for this conference is open to all! In addition to participation in conference programming, this includes dinner on Friday evening, as well as, breakfast and lunch on Saturday. This event is free to all students. All other attendees are asked to pay the following fee(s). Proceeds from this event will be donated to the Peace Center in support of their programs and service to the community. Further information about how to register will be posted on the conference website.

Call for Student proposals:

Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to submit paper, poster and photo essay presentations relating to the conference theme, “Engaging Peace.” Special attention will be given to those proposals relating to the following topics, however, all proposals will be accepted for review. Given the interdisciplinary nature of this event, individuals studying the intersection of peace studies and conflict resolution with other disciplines are especially encouraged to apply. Proposals may include thesis or dissertation length projects, but may also reflect or report on semester papers, internships and volunteer experiences. All persons submitting abstracts are expected to attend.

Types of Presentations

Paper Presentations should be approximately 10-15 minutes in length. Presentation: Several minutes for questions will follow each presentation. Students are welcome to have a brief, one page executive hand- out for dispersal. Students' work will be grouped into panels with similar projects. Poster: Posters should be the following dimensions: 24" x 36" (vertically or horizontally formatted). Discretion should be used in regards to text length. Students are welcome to have a brief, one page hand-out for dispersal. Posters will be displayed during the conference with an opportunity for students to stand with their display and explain key points about their work. Posters should be fully completed before the conference. The Conference Committee will assist presenters with mounting their posters when they arrive. Poster display location to be announced. Photo Essay Photo essays are an important narrative tool. Photo essays should present a series of upwards of 6 cohesive images relating to the theme of "Engaging Peace." Photographs should be mounted on a poster (24" x 36", vertically or horizontally formatted) and include a title and captions. Captions, whose length should not exceed 30 words, should be provided under each photo. Photographs should be the student's own original work.

Abstract Submission Instructions

To be considered, submissions should include a 300 word abstract or description of the project, university and degree program and contact information. Students are reminded that abstracts should include a description of their research topic, central questions, methodology, framework, and significance. Photo Essay submissions should describe the context and background of the images and relevant issues or experiences captured.

Tentative Schedule:

“Engaging Peace” will take place over the course of a day and a half. The following is a brief and general overview of the schedule.

Friday, March 23, 2012

Registration will open for the conference beginning at 5:00 PM in the University Commons. Opening remarks will be made, followed by dinner and presentations by our keynote speakers. Conference participants will then be invited to attend a social hour at a local venue.

Saturday, March 24, 2012

Registration and breakfast will open for participants beginning at 7:30 AM. Participants will have the option of choosing from a series of simultaneously occurring panels, speakers and workshops during each one and a half hour session. Throughout the day, poster and photo essay submissions will be open for viewing. The conference will run until approximately 5:30 PM.

Although Arcadia University is unable to provide financial support or accommodation on campus, conference participants are able to advantage of Preferred Customer Rates at the Fort Washington Hilton Garden Inn. From Cheltenham Avenue, bear right onto Limekiln Pike (Route 309 North). As you approach light at Greenwood Avenue, move into right lane. Proceed through light and take first exit (Route 152/Glenside). At top of ramp, make right onto Easton Road. Make first left turn into Castle entrance.

Take the Route 152/Easton Road exit. At top of ramp, make left turn onto Easton Road. Go through light and make left turn into Castle entrance.

From the Pennsylvania Turnpike:

Take the Fort Washington exit (#339). Proceed south on Route 309. Take the Route 152/Easton Road exit. At top of ramp, make left turn onto Easton Road. Go through light and make left turn into Castle entrance.

From the Schuylkill Expressway:

Take the Lincoln Drive exit (#340A) follow Lincoln Drive past Emlen Street to Mount Pleasant Avenue. Turn right onto Mount Pleasant and follow until it ends at Cheltenham Avenue. Turn left onto Cheltenham Avenue and right onto Easton Road at the Cedarbrook Plaza, before the Holy Sepulchre Cemetary. After crossing over Route 309, make left turn into Castle entrance.

From the Tacony Palmyra Bridge or Betsy Ross Bridge:

Take Cottman Avenue (Route 73 West). Cottman Avenue becomes Township Line Road (still Route 73). Follow Route 73 as it makes a left turn onto Washington Lane. Make a right turn onto Church Road (Route 73) and continue to Arcadia University. After light at Limekiln Pike, make left turn into campus at second entrance.

From southern New Jersey via the Walt Whitman Bridge:

Follow signs from your area to the Walt Whitman Bridge. Cross bridge and follow signs for Route 76 West (Schuylkill Expressway). Follow directions from the Schuylkill Expressway.

From southern New Jersey via the Ben Franklin Bridge:

Take I-95 North to 476 North. Take 276 East (the Pennsylvania Turnpike). Follow directions from the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

By Train:

Take the SEPTA R5 or R2 lines to . Use SEPTA #22 bus or taxicab or walk south along Easton Road to Arcadia University.

By Bus:

Take the SEPTA #22 to Arcadia University. Connect with the #22 from Broad Street Subway and SEPTA bus routes C, #18 and #26 at SEPTA center at Broad Street and Olney Avenue. From Mt. Airy/Cedarbrook take the SEPTA H bus and transfer to SEPTA #22 at Cheltenham Avenue and Easton Road.

All conference events will take place within the University Commons (13), Easton Hall (16), Brubaker Hall (15) and the Landman Library (10). Signs for parking will be posted on the day of the event.
