INTRODUCIION The first results of Western economic and political sanctions against the government of South Africa are in: Apartheid's supporters have been strengthened while those seeking reforms have been weakened. "I'he evidence of this is abundant: ' . ++ In the whites-only election last month, the ruling National Party (NP)was returned with even greater control over the Parliament than before. ++ In the election, the racially moderate Progressive Federal Party (PW) was replaced as the official opposition party in the Parliament by the pro-apartheid Conservative Party (CP). This means that for the first time since the institutionalization of apartheid in 1948, the Pretoria government will be criticized in 'the Parliament not for moving too slowly to abolish apartheid, but for moving too quickly. ++ U.S. influence in Pretoria has been reduced, as the South African government has rejected what it views as unacceptable foreign interference in its internal affairs. ++ Economic sanctions have not damaged the South African economy severely. Most South African producers have found ' new markets for their products. Further, sanctions have caused a short-term stimulus, as the economy moves to create its own substitutes for former imports. ++ To the extent that the effects of sanctions have been felt in South Africa, they have been felt by blacks--precisely the people they were supposed to help. ++ Disinvestment by U.S. corporations doing business in South Africa also has set back the anti-apartheid campaign. U.S. corporatioh have sold their manufacturing plants and assets to South African businessmen at firesale prices. -

CONFORMITY AND CONFLICT: AFRIKANER NATIONALIST POLITICS IN SOUTH AFRICA, 1948-1961 by John Lazar Balllol College Oxford University Michaelmas Term, 1987 One of the principal themes of this thesis is that it is incorrect to treat M Afrikanerdom" as a monolithic, unified ethnic entity. At the time of its election victory in 1948, the National Party (NP) represented an alliance of various factions and classes, all of whom perceived their Interests in different ways. Given, too, that black resistance to exploitation and oppression increased throughout the 1950s, apartheid ideology cannot be viewed as an immutable, uncontested blueprint, which was stamped by the NP on to a static political situation. The thesis is based on four main strands of research. It is grounded, firstly, in a detailed analysis of Afrikaner social stratification during the 1950s. The political implications of the rapid increase in the number of Afrikaners employed in "white-collar" occupations, and the swift economic expansion of the large Afrikaner corporations, are also examined. The second strand of research examines the short-term political problems which faced the nationalist alliance in the years following its slim victory in the 1948 election. Much of the NP's energy during its first five years in office was spent on consolidating its precarious hold on power, rather than on the imposition of a "grand" ideological programme. Simultaneously, however, intense discussions - and conflicts - concerning the long-term implications, goals and justifications of apartheid were taking place amongst Afrikaner intellectuals and clergymen. A third thrust of the thesis will be to examine the way in which these conflicts concretely shaped the ultimate direction of apartheid policy and ideology. -

Chapter One: Introduction 1.1 Relevance The Kairos Document (KD) analysed in an unprecedented way the stances the Church could take as part of the greater community of South Africa and as part of civil society in the latter part of the 1980s, challenging the churches to accept their prophetic role in apartheid South Africa. It created quite a stir and led to numerous initiatives taken by the ecumenical community. However, since the institution of a democratic dispensation in 1994, the churches often appear paralysed and ominously silent when confronted by the challenges of the new South Africa. The problem appears both on a theological and a practical level. When in 1990 when then state president FW de Klerk made his groundbreaking announcement about the imminent release of all political prisoners including Nelson Mandela in particular, the Church, which was in a relatively better position to challenge the then status quo, appeared to have been caught on the wrong foot. Since then there has been no visible cohesive response to the new dispensation. It is a debatable question whether the inclusion of the South African Council of Churches (SACC), the South African Catholic Bishops Conference (SACBC) and The Evangelical Association of South Africa (TEASA) within the political negotiations would have made a difference in securing leverage for the Church as a whole. Attempts have been made by the SACC to realign themselves in the new South Africa but little is heard of these endeavours. Does the Church in South Africa not think that the existing disunity constitutes a crisis? How much of the entrapments of power, status-seeking and one-upmanship is hindering the Church from being the Church in South Africa? Situations still exist where Christians still can not receive Holy Communion together as in the case of Roman Catholics, for example. -

A S Geyser, teologiese dosent 1946-1961 A G van Aarde Universiteit van Pretoria Abstract A S Geyser, lecturer in theology 1946-1961 In this article the academic role of Professor A S Geyser is briefly discussed. He lectured in New Testament Stu dies and Practical Theology at the University of Preto ria from 1946. He resigned in 1961, after a period of strife. His publications show a consistence in eXegetical approach and theological description. His historical-cri- ticai investigation was aimed beyond the New Testa ment into the preteXts which evidenced the commence ment of the universal apostolate at Antioch. Inferred from his eXegetical results he propounded the unity of the church as an imperative for today. However, against the background of the South African political history from 1948 to 1961, the political and ecumenical implications of Geyser’s theological convictions were not acceptable to the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk. 1. CONFESSING TO REMORSE ABOUT THE EVILS OF APARTHEID: THE DUTCH REFORMED CHURCH IN THE NINETEEN-EIGHTIES T. Dunbar Moodie, Emeritus Professor, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, also Research Associate, Society, Work and Development Institute (SWOP), University of the Witwatersrand Abstract: The transition in South Africa from apartheid to a constitutional democracy with equal rights for all has been described and celebrated in innumerable accounts. The best overview is probably Patti Waldmeir’s, Anatomy of a Miracle. What is missing from such stories, however, at least in English, is careful discussion of the role in the transformation process played by the Dutch Reformed churches (and other Afrikaner cultural organizations) in preparing Afrikaners for transition to democracy. The purpose of this paper is to examine theological debates and political struggles within the majority Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk (NGK) that led to public confession in 1990 of remorse about the evils of apartheid. The most fundamental change, however, came earlier, at the 1986 General Synod, well before F.W. de Klerk’s 1989 political leap forward. The paper seeks to describe personal, intellectual, cultural and political processes within the church that brought about this institutional transformation. The best book in English on change through the late 1970s and early 1980s in the NGK (the majority Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa with around 80% of white Afrikaans- speaking reformed church-goers) remains Apartheid, Change and the NG Kerk, by J.H.P. Serfontein.1 Based on years of extensive interviews with church people, it contains many appendices with translations of important documents as well as an admirable effort to situate church debates within political developments from 1978 to 1982. -

According to the Executive Mayor, Cllr Kgosientso Ramokgopa, the street name changes were necessary to ensure racial harmony and cohesion in the city. Nelson (Madiba) Mandela (1918 - ) Nelson Mandela is one of the most famous political leaders in the world. He was born in Qunu, near Umtata in the Eastern Cape and is a qualified lawyer. He was the first democratically elected South African president, serving from 1994 to 1999. Before his presidency, Mandela was a militant anti-apartheid activist and the leader and co-founder of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC). In 1962, he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges. He was sentenced to life imprisonment, for treason, by the apartheid government but was released in February 1990 after serving 27 years. Professor Johan Heyns (1928 – 1994) Johan Heyns was an influential Afrikaner Calvinist theologian and moderator of the general synod of the Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk (NGK). He was assassinated at his home in Waterkloof Ridge in 1994. His death drew shock and outrage from all moderates in South Africa, including Nelson Mandela. Heyns was instrumental in the 1986 NGK decision to abandon its support for apartheid and brand it a sin. Although his murder was never officially solved, it is widely believed that it was directly related to his criticism of apartheid. Nelson Mandela paid homage to him as a martyr for his country and a soldier of peace.
